Description
Dog Breed: Beagle / Hound / Mixed. MABEL IS A COURTESY LISTING - IF INTERESTED PLEASE TEXT OR EMAIL: Courtney at (440) 574-1319 or cstachome Mabel is goofy, very affectionate and has a wonderful balance of playful outdoor energy and relaxed indoor manners. She loves attention from anyone willing to give it to her. She was found in March roaming a hunting preserve, severely underweight and covered in ticks and fleas. At first she was scared of being indoors, but from day one she was friendly and clearly wanted love. She has since learned the joys of dog beds, cuddling and being loved by her people and playing with other dogs. Mabel currently lives with cats, a ferret, and a 9-year-old child. She is generally fine with the cats... she may briefly show interest or chase for a moment, but she mostly ignores them. Outside she is typical beagle/hound wandering the yard, sniffing, exploring and not interested in chasing wildlife. As far as housetraining, Mabel's current environment includes an elderly Chihuahua who uses potty pads, so there is not a clear “no potty indoors” signal in the home. Nonetheless, she is making progress. She sometimes indicates that she needs to go outside, but she needs consistent routine, regular outdoor breaks, and positive reinforcement. Mabel arrived very underweight and food insecure, and she does need management around food and high-value resources. She should always be fed separately. She can guard food, toys, beds and bed space, and human attention. Her guarding behavior is primarily directed toward other dogs, although she has guarded from her foster person a few times. This has only involved barking, growling, and making her discomfort known, but she has never bitten or made and unwanted contact in her foster home. She is great with children, but they need to be old enough to understand not to touch or approach her food, treats, toys, or other high-value items. Mabel is not crate trained and is not comfortable in a crate at this time. She can be vocal when crated, so her current foster home does not rely on crating as part of her routine. When left alone, Mabel may bark and chew things, but she generally settles after some time. She would do best with appropriate chew toys, a dog-proofed area, and a patient home that can continue helping her learn that alone time is safe. Currently Mabel is usually allowed to free-roam in the home or stays in a guest room when left alone. She is very inexperienced on a leash but could learn with training and positive reinforcement. Mabel needs patient people who understand resource guarding, will respect her boundaries around food and high-value items. She also needs a securely fenced yard where she can safely sniff, explore, and enjoy herself without relying on off-leash recall. She would also benefit from another friendly dog and someone who is home enough to help her continue building successful routines.
