Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. At 9 years old, Guinness may technically be a senior, but apparently no one has bothered to tell him. This handsome German Shepherd still has plenty of pep in his step, loves his daily adventures, and is always ready for a game of fetch. Guinness is the perfect example of why senior dogs are so special. He’s past the puppy chaos, fully house trained, knows , , and , and has settled beautifully into foster care. He’s also crate trained and, after a few minutes of protesting, settles right down. For a 9-year-old guy, Guinness is impressively active! He absolutely LOVES his walks and currently gets several each day, totaling around 2–3 miles. He walks well on leash, although he can still pull a little when something exciting catches his attention. He also enjoys car rides and knows to settle comfortably in the back seat. And then there’s fetch. Guinness LOVES it. Tennis balls, chew toys, and his beloved “fluffies” are all high on his list, and he’ll happily bring you a toy when he decides it’s time to play. Once the fun is over, he’s perfectly content to relax nearby or curl up next to his person. Guinness previously lived with another dog for several years. His foster is taking introductions with new dogs slowly while he settles in, so any canine siblings would require a proper introduction. Cats, however, are much too tempting to chase, so - . His foster has been especially impressed by how well this older shepherd has adjusted. He welcomes visitors, enjoys meeting people, listens well, takes treats gently, and loves being included in everyday life. A home with a securely fenced yard would be wonderful for Guinness, giving him a safe place to wander, sniff, and enjoy the outdoors between his walks and games of fetch. At 9, Guinness isn’t looking for a place to slow down. He’s looking for someone to enjoy this next chapter with. A few good walks, a tennis ball, a comfy bed, and a person to stay close to sound just about perfect. Oh, and if a siren goes by, expect Guinness to contribute his own adorable howl. This dog is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (Please note: Puppies under 3 months old may not be sterilized prior to adoption. If this is the case, your adoption coordinator will provide guidance on the process.) To adopt or learn more about this dog, you must complete an adoption application, which can be found on our website: .sandypawsrescue. PLEASE READ: • If a dog or puppy is listed, they are currently available for adoption. However, they may already be pending an adoption, and their profile may not yet reflect this. • All information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of the posting date. • Unless explicitly stated, Sandy Paws Rescue does not guarantee the breed of any dog. Breeds listed are educated guesses made by shelter staff, volunteers, or veterinarians. Many of our dogs are mixed breeds, often with pit bull-type genetics, resulting in a wide variety of physical traits and temperaments. Our dogs come from various situations, such as kill shelters, owner surrenders, or as strays. It is likely both parents were mixed breeds as well. Sandy Paws Rescue does not have a public shelter in Massachusetts. Our dogs reside in private foster homes or boarding kennels in the South until adopted. Many dogs are spoken for prior to transport or release from state-mandated isolation. For information on adoption fees, procedures, or FAQs, visit our website: .sandypawsrescue. The FIRST step in adopting from Sandy Paws Rescue is to submit a completed adoption application.

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
