Meet Indy Mae Location: San Antonio, TX DOB: 8/9/25 Indy is a very sweet, gentle girl who is soft both emotionally and physically. She absolutely loves her humans and would happily spend 25 hours a day, 8 days a week getting pets and attention. She’s a bit of a couch potato and is perfectly content relaxing with her people, with the backyard being more than enough activity for her. Indy has likely spent most of her life on the streets, so she is essentially learning how to be a dog all over again. So many things inside a home are still new to her. She can be cautious and unsure when encountering unfamiliar objects, people, environments, and experiences. She isn’t necessarily afraid, but she often needs time to decide that something is safe. One of the sweetest things about Indy is watching her learn new concepts. She’s discovering how fun toys can be and how to play with other dogs. She’s quite calm and has moderate energy, but she also knows how to settle appropriately. What Indy Already Knows Indy is doing wonderfully with several important skills: Housebroken Leash trained Crate trained Good in the car Knows how to sit Learning basic commands and household etiquette She will need to be crated when left home alone for now, with nothing in the crate except appropriate toys or treats. She is still learning that shoes and clothing are not acceptable chew toys! Indy has a particular fondness for stealing shoes and clothes that smell like her humans. It’s almost like she’s collecting things that make her feel close to her people — adorable in theory, but unfortunately a couple of shoes have paid the price. Indy & Other Dogs Indy is still learning how to interact with other dogs. She had very little opportunity to socialize before coming into her foster home, so the adjustment took some patience. When she first arrived, she was very guarded around the resident dogs. With time, however, she realized they weren't her enemies, and now they’re all besties. She and her foster sibling Juliette have become especially sweet together. Juliette has been teaching Indy how to play and showing her what toys are for, and it has been wonderful to watch Indy come out of her shell. Because of this, we think Indy could really benefit from a home with another dog, provided her new family understands that she may need some time to adjust and build trust with a new canine companion. New People & New Experiences Indy is still very unsure around people outside of her immediate household. She has not yet had much exposure to strangers, and she has not had strangers in the home. She has met one additional person and was not interested in interacting, becoming almost scared with her tail tucked. She is also still learning about the world outside her home. Many things that seem completely ordinary to us are brand new to her, so her adopter will need to be patient and allow her to experience new things at her own pace. She has not yet been around children, so her compatibility with children is currently unknown. Medical Indy is currently being treated for heartworm and is taking doxycycline. She has also received her heartworm treatment injection. She is working on gaining weight, and thankfully she is slowly but surely putting on healthy weight. She is not yet spayed because she needs to reach a healthy weight before undergoing surgery. Her vet visits have been a bit of a learning experience. She did well with the veterinary team initially, but after having to undergo some less-than-fun procedures, including fecal testing, she decided they had betrayed her trust. She’ll need continued patience and positive experiences with veterinary care. The Home Indy Needs Indy’s ideal family will be someone who understands that she is essentially starting over and learning what it means to live safely and comfortably in a home. She needs someone who: Has lots of patience and understanding Is comfortable with a dog who wants a LOT of affection and attention Will give her time to adjust to a new environment Will continue working on basic commands and manners Understands that unfamiliar people, objects, and experiences may take time Will help her continue building confidence and social skills Can keep tempting items like shoes and clothing out of reach while she learns Indy isn't looking for a family that expects her to immediately know how to be the perfect dog. She needs someone willing to teach her, reassure her, and celebrate all of her little victories. She has already come such a long way. The guarded girl who first arrived has learned to trust her foster family and her foster siblings, discovered the joy of toys and play, learned to sit, and shown just how loving she can be. For the right person, watching Indy discover the world and become more confident is going to be incredibly rewarding.
