Below is a new bio for Pickles and is updated as of 9/1/26: Pickles is 46 pounds expected to reach mid 50's (his mom is Carmi and is 42 pounds) he has his sister Sophie. If you are looking for 2 dogs Pickles, sophie, Carmie and Happy are his bff's but the best match would be Pickles and his mom Carmi and even better just Pickles. He would he happy in a home with other pets or as a single pet as long as he is adopted by someone who can keep him socialized among other dogs frequently as he loves dog friends. Pickles is such a handsome shepherd mix rescued from the streets of Tijuana, Mexico when his mama Carmi gave birth to a litter of 7 pups and a good sam took her in and her pups. They seeked assistance for the family of 8 around January and we took the family in to come across to foster in February. Pickles and fam were all fostered by a family in san diego with 4 children ranging 4-12yrs old and couple of large breed dogs which means they had amazing socialization. He came to casa de ARWOB late March as a foster along with some of the sibs and mom and has been here since then. I am his 'foster mom' but realistically I have many foster dogs and cats and I don't do one on one training like a normal foster or an owner can focus on their own dogs. I do have to say he is an amazing teenager! Forget that he is a very handsome dog. He is loyal, intelligent and social. I would say he is almost perfect but there is no such thing as a perfect shepherd or working breed ha ha Pickles is amazing in his crate, house and potty trained. He is wonderful with children, men, woman, cats and all dogs. He has shown no separation anxiety, he has not shown off or on reactivity towards people or dogs*. He enjoys car rides and walks/hikes (i don't run but he RUNS like a gazzel off leash) so would be a wonderful running companion. Pickles only has ONE negative that can easily be worked out once he is in a different home either foster or adopter to work one on one with him. The only "con" for Pickles is his shepherd gene is strong. Meaning. When he goes to the dog park, it has to be specific times because until someone (a foster or adopter) works with his recall he can't be trusted at dog parks (not because of aggression) BUT because when a dog runs full speed, lets say someone is playing chuck it or a dog is getting the zoomies where it runs like crazy and wants the other dogs to chase it and the whole dog park is going full blast Pickles is also going full blast "trying to catch' that dog. Which is fine in most dogs BUT not on certain dogs like Pickles who think its their "job" and once they catch that dog he can be a bit too much in that dogs space which may turn into a nippy situation which is a big no no and potential issue. So, we prevent that at all cost. I end up going to dog park and if i see a situation with dogs running like that he goes on a long lead and just inside the dog park or leave lead loose and grab it to stop him from getting into his 'zone' this is not ideal but he loves to socialize with people and dogs at dog parks. SO, if you are interested in Pickles you must enroll in dog training to nip this in the but and a trainer can tell you how to work on this probably good recall, etc. This also means sometimes (rare) he will see a dog being walked on leash and will try to bark/react but that is nipped immediatelly with a correction and he is pretty good, he does not do it all the time and not all the dogs and once we approach dogs on leash to say hi he is of course all happy face, its really just excitement and male young SHEPHERD behavior. If you are looking to adopt a medium to larger breed and the breed then you should know this is common and hence dog training is a must for anyone adopting these breeds. Sure you may choose a younger dog because it doesn't exhibit the behavior now but it will as it grow ups unless you do basic dog training with a dog trainerr....there is no such thing as a perfet dog but Pickles is pretty close to it. Love this sweet boy and although has been my foster dog for months and is a happy dog we are not a sanctuary and he can't stay here forever so I do hope we can find a good safe loving forever family for him or at least a foster who can work with him one on one to nip this behavior to increae his chance at a happy adoption and of course also helps us network him in the community when its one foster taking the dogs out and about. Summary: A fast moving target like a biker, runner, joger, dog fetching etc will 'kick start' his shepherd genes and we need a foster/adopter to know this to work on this to make sure he can safely enjoy dog parks or any off leash locations. Playing in his own backyard with other resident dogs is not a problem as long as the other dog is OK with this type of energy. Don't forget to inquire on our foster to adopt trails which are 2-4 weeks, submit an adoption to adopt, comment you'd like to foster (we will likely bring it up as well either way) and you can choose to adopt or foster to adopt as long as you have been approved to foster/adopt one of our rescue dogs. If you have no problem with virtual home checks and have written landlord approval then please submit an application online Toda at ARWOB or email/text us to schedule a call if you have questions before submitting an application. If you would like to meet one of our animals, PLEASE fill out an adoption application.
