Arnie’s foster reports that he is a true collie companion that is quiet, dignified, loyal, and not intrusive. He is an absolute stunner, who is well built with beautiful coloring and an easy-care coat. He does not demand attention but will seek attention. While he may be on the timid side when he first meets new people, he would flourish in a home that is willing to be patient while he settles in, because he is worth it! He is house trained, great with other dogs, has not had experience with cats, and is good with kids who are 10 years and older. He might be good with younger kids and/or cats, but he hasn’t been around them, so we just don’t know! He has not needed to be crated but is typically put in a smaller room when his foster leaves, although they think he could probably roam just fine! A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
