Description

Dog Breed: Siberian Husky. How to Adopt Meet Cato, an 8-year-old Husky/Malamute mix who is hoping that his next home will finally be his forever home. Cato has already had three homes in his lifetime, and through no fault of his own, he is facing another transition. His current family originally found him wandering the neighborhood after his elderly owner was no longer able to care for him. They opened their home to him and gave him a safe place to land, but their family situation has now changed, and they can no longer give Cato the time and attention he deserves. At 8 years old, Cato has been through enough changes. He doesn’t need another temporary stop—he needs the family who will love him and keep him for the rest of his life. ❤️ Cato is a sweet senior gentleman who enjoys having his people around. He is frightened by fireworks and thunderstorms, so he’ll need a family who will be patient and reassuring when those scary noises come around. He has lived successfully with two cats and was wonderful with them. When it comes to other dogs, Cato can be hit or miss, so a meet-and-greet is recommended with any potential canine siblings. Cato is around 70 pounds and will do best with someone who is comfortable handling a strong, larger dog. But more than anything, he needs stability, patience, love, and a family who won’t give up on him. Cato needs a foster or, better yet, his forever family. Three homes is more than enough. Let’s make sure Cato’s next home is the one where he can finally unpack his bags, settle in, and know he is home for good. ❤️ If you can give Cato the loving, permanent home he deserves, please contact Siberian Husky Rescue of New Mexico. And if you can’t adopt, please share his story. His forever family may be just one share away.

Siberian Husky

A.K.A.: Husky, Arctic Husky, Chukcha, Chukchi, Chukchi Sled Dog, Sibe, Sibes, Sled Dog, Snow Dog
Overview:

The Siberian Husky is a striking and beloved breed, originating from Northeast Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people for pulling sleds over long distances in harsh conditions. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their medium size, thick double coat (available in various colors and markings), and often captivating blue or bi-colored eyes. Their temperament is typically friendly, outgoing, and playful, making them generally good with children and other dogs. However, their independent and sometimes stubborn nature, coupled with a strong prey drive, means consistent training and secure containment are essential. While affectionate, their high energy levels and need for significant exercise make them less suitable for sedentary lifestyles or tiny apartments; a house with a securely fenced yard is often preferred. Health-wise, they are generally robust but can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. Overall, a Siberian Husky thrives with active families committed to meeting their exercise and mental stimulation needs.
