Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed. Mattison Female 39 lbs 1-2 YO HW negative Meet Mattison! Mattison is a sweet and gentle little girl who is looking for someone to show her that life can be filled with love, and security. Just look at that absolutely stunning brindle coat! She is a beautiful girl inside and out. Mattison is a 1–2-year-old female, weighs 39 pounds, and is heartworm negative. She and her sister, Maribel, were found roaming together in a nice neighborhood. Sadly, it appears they may have been dropped off, and no one has come forward to claim them. When Mattison first arrived at the shelter, she was understandably timid and frightened, but with a few days of patience and gentle encouragement from our volunteers, Mattison is beginning to come out of her shell. She is starting to look forward to walks on a leash and doing pretty well. She is very sweet and gentle and absolutely loves sitting quietly while she gets petted. Mattison is looking for a patient family willing to give her a little time to feel safe and learn to trust. She has so much love waiting to be given. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
