Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Gruffi, the brown brindle pittie mix. Gruffi came to the Shelter as a stray after being found by California Highway Patrol as a stray by the freeway along with a puppy Cubbi. Cubbi and Gruffi could be adopted together, if there is an adopter looking for a pair of dogs to adopt (but it is not required). Gruffi has been wiggly and sociable with staff and volunteers since arrival. Typical to pups his age, he can be a bit mouthy when he is excited. Adopters should have appropriate toys to redirect his mouth towards when he is mouthing. Gruffi met a female mixed breed who, after a little warming up to, he enjoyed playbowing and zooming around the exercise yards with. A dog in the home may be a fit after a meet ân greet at the Shelter. Gruffiâs adopters should be patient with him as he learns life skills and manners (potty training and leash walking). With positive reinforcement, time and a good sense of humor, Gruffi will bond with his new family and make a great companion. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
