BIO Update (10/10/2026): This handsome pup is a bit of a velcro dog in the best sense of the word. Henry loves being around his person. If you are engaged in a task he will understand and give you that space, he just wants to be near. This little guy is highly protective of his person. He bonds with a person and that is HIS person. More on that in a bit. Henry is not a picky eater. He has had very, very few potty accidents in the house. He loves to burrow and sleeps well throughout the night. And as a special bonus, he can pose like a Meerkat!
The things to be aware: Henry is a counter surfer. He loves being on top of things. Check out some of the new pictures where he has managed to get atop of the sofa or recliner. Be aware that he is curious and you should make sure that chairs are pushed fully under a table lest his curiosity gets the best of him. He will investigate what’s on top of that table!!!
Henry’s most serious tendency is that he is not a fan of strangers. New dogs are not a problem. New people can be a challenge. He is somewhat picky in that regard though. The HVAC technician or the house cleaner? You had better prepare for that by putting him in his kennel or having him outside in the fenced yard that is a rock-solid requirement. As mentioned earlier, you will be Henry’s special person. He will tolerate that person that you have in your home on a regular basis. Be aware that this will take patience and a number of visits to get him familiar. His foster dad has a dog sitter that comes to the house when needed and she and Henry have become fast friends. She is in an elite class though and a dachshund savvy sitter.
Henry, deep down, is a really sweet dog who does not make a great first impression. The person who takes the time to understand and love him will be rewarded with a sweet dog that will be forever loyal to them. Could you be the person that gives him that chance?
BIO: Henry was adopted out in 2020 and, through no fault of his own, was returned to our rescue. Henry needs a strong pack leader and someone who will work with him, as he is not fond of strangers and will voice his opinion.
With his family, he is very loving and loyal and deserves a chance to have a last forever home.
Our must-haves for handsome Henry include:
A fenced yard A quiet home with few visitors Someone who will work with him on walks to get his weight down He would be fine with another small senior pet No apartments, high-rises, or condos, as he will bark at outside noises If you think you can give Henry the kind of home he needs, then contact his foster mom at aadrpresidentgmail. He will require some work, but he’s very loyal and loving.
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
We cannot adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
