Name: Petra Best Guess for Breed: German Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of August 2026 SEX: female Approximate Weight: 66lbs as of Sep 2026 Gets Along With: Other dogs! We have tested Petra with some of the cats at the shelter, and she did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that Petra could live with a cat, she has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack! We haven't seen her with kids. Currently Living at: DC area foster Special adoption considerations: Petra is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Petra is Looking For: Her forever home! This happy girl is looking ahead to her new chapter, the one where she once again has her own humans for sniffy walks and romps in parks and all the adventures they can dream up. Making pup pals along the way would be great too. Oh and good dog food and cozy resting places! What My Foster Says About Me: Petra is doing great! She walks very nicely on a leash and knows sit and paw. She is making great progress with crate training (goes in willingly) and house training. She also does well in the car! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
