ANDRE* - Staffordshire Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix Male Dog For Adoption in Santa Cruz, California, USA

Dog Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat).

Meet Andre, the black brindle staffie. Andre came into the Shelter via animal control after he and three other dogs were reported to be running around a rural area of South County. A good Samaritan and our animal control team were able to get all four dogs into safety at the Shelter. We are not sure their relation or exact age. They did not have identification, and no one came forward to claim them. Andre was more confident and social than others in the group when they arrived, and he's since been making friends with lots of staff and volunteers while he's been learning lots of skills he didn't arrive with: things like walking on leash, coming indoors, and not going potty indoors. A little patience and positive reinforcement for behaviors we want him to repeat have helped him gain confidence and become a better candidate for life with a new family and home. Andre would love to have access to a securely fenced yard, and continued positive training. He now LOVES to have cuddle time on a couch and will often fall fast asleep in our `cuddle room` with a volunteer. Andre has a pretty mellow temperament - he's not a hyper young dog - he enjoys a nice walk, a little mild playtime and adores cuddle time. Though Andre arrived with several other dogs, that lifestyle seemed to be a little too competitive for him, and he can be a little socially awkward, so he'll likely do best either as an `only dog,` or with just one, well-matched friend after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter and some thoughtful introductions and decompression time for the first few weeks. We do not have any experience with Andre around children or cats. Andre is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
