Akita

A.K.A. : Akita Inu, Japanese Akita, American Akita, Great Japanese Dog
Overview: The Akita was developed to hunt bears in Japan and, as such, is a great guard dog. They're strong and loyal, often employed by police for active duty.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male:85-130, female:65-110
Height (in): male:25-28, female:23-26
Colors: Any color, including white, pinto, or brindle.
Coat: The hair is straight and coarse, and the undercoat is soft and dense.
Character: Akitas are intelligent and calm. Though great watch dogs, they bark infrequently.
Temperament: This breed prefers not to have other dogs in the family. There may be problems if they do not become acquainted with cats and other household pets early in life. They get along with children that are respectful of their space.
Care: The Akita is a shedder. At least twice a year, groom it with a metal-toothed comb.
Training: A good deal of patience and persistence is required when training this breed.
Activity: Akitas are able to adjust to your schedule. Daily walks are good, but they seem to handle foregoing a walk, if needed.
Country of Origin: Japan
Health Issue: This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, immune diseases, skin problems, eye, and knee problems.
Life Expectancy: 10-12

More About Akita Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Bred by Nathan Fenby of New Oxford, Pa. Snow Bell - 3-4 y.o., white Import female. Snow Bell (fka Snow Ball) is a petite pixie'ish female, that epitomizes Japanese femininity. She is playful and flirty, friendly and curious about all going on around her, a real charmer. She walks well on leash. Will alert when other dogs in yards bark at her and will arouse quickly. This can be cut short by a verbal correction. She will remain on alert but will continue walking well. We then practiced sitting (which she did very well), but would need some practice on staying 'put'. When she settled down, she was very kissy and quite the cuddler. She leaned into me and loved to have her chest scratched and tummy rubbed. Her tail reminded me of a huge Spider Chrysanthemum corsage attached to her hip, combined with the pink lead, all she needed was a parasol to be Tokyo's best girl. I believe this girl has been in several homes and it is apparent that she has learned to be skillful in her efforts to pick and choose what she wishes to do. I think she will do fine in an Akita savvy home, with stability and boundaries, who won't fall victim to her charming efforts to have things her way. Snowbelle would be best as an only dog in a home with no small children. She has had some issues with anxiety while being crated and left alone. Her ideal home would have someone home most of the day.

Posted Breed: Akita. Champ ran away from his owner back to his BYB, who called animal control on him. Champ did this on a regular basis because his owner did not feed him and abused him. When the officers arrived, the next door neighbor who had already called rescue on his sister agreed to take him in. She called rescue back to let us know that now we had another dog to take. He is very sweet, rides well in a car and even after lots of good food for several weeks is still thin as a bone. He got along well with his mom and sister. Stay tuned for more info. looking for a foster home

Posted Breed: Akita. Bruno and his companion, Eva, were taken on a humane hold by animal control when neighbors complained they had no food, water or shelter. The owners signed them over to AC. Bruno seems to be quite good with people when they have visited him. Bruno would be best as an only pet in a home with no small children !!

Posted Breed: Akita. See Niko's HomepageGo to our official websiteTHIS ANIMAL IS BEING COURTESY POSTED FOR ANOTHER ORGANIZATION. PLEASE SEE CONTACT INFORMATION BELOW FOR DETAILS AND LOCATION. Hi, my name is Niko and I’m a 7 year old Akita who weighs around 95 lbs. Let me tell you a little about myself. I can be the biggest couch potato who loves to hang out with my foster family, but I also enjoy taking long walks. My foster mom walks me for 40 minutes every day and if she tries to cut it short, I’ll stop and let her know we aren’t done yet. I have very good manners inside the house. While I do well with the other resident dogs in my foster home, I would really prefer to be the only dog. I like older children who are dog savvy and know how to give me my space when I need it. You’re probably wondering where I came from. Freedom Farm rescued me 5 years ago when I ended up at a Ft. Campbell shelter. In my first foster home, I was the only dog and I loved all the attention. Shortly after I was rescued, the 2010 flood happened. My foster mom was so scared because her house had started to flood. So she grabbed me and my leash and we headed to higher ground. Luckily, some nice people were out in boats helping families and they picked us up and took us to safety. After that, I did have to go into boarding for a little while. That’s when a family saw me and took me home. Sadly, I was recently returned to Freedom Farm because I wasn’t used to having a baby around. Overall, I’m in pretty good health for my age. I do have thyroid medicine that I take every day and I’m taking glucosamine to help with my arthritis. I’m a sweet boy who loves to meet new people. Do you have a spot on your couch for me?Niko is located in Nashville Tennesee. Contact Kim at akitas2love@gmail.com for more information
