Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). Adorable big doofus of a girl!

American Bulldog

Overview: Originally used in the 17th century for bull baiting—a wagering sport in which dogs fought bulls in a ring—Bulldogs had taller, more athletic frames (much like the Olde English Bulldogge). When bull baiting was outlawed in 1835, Bulldogs were bred to be kinder, heavier and more relaxed. However, American Bulldogs—which were brought to the U.S. before this breeding pattern—retained the size and strength of the original Bulldogs. Great family dogs, American Bulldogs are sweet to children. They love family-oriented occasions and want to be involved. With proper training and socialization, you’ll find them outgoing and exceedingly loyal. Some American Bulldogs will go to great lengths to protect their masters. Tough and determined, American Bulldogs have an impressive stamina and strength. They are always game for playtime in the back yard or working in the field.
Breed Group: Non-Sporting
Weight (lbs): male-70-120 female-60-100
Height (in): 19-27
Colors: white, brindle, brown, red or tan
Coat: Short, coarse coat. For such a short haired dog, American Bulldogs shed more than you might think. Their short coarse hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing, upholstery, and carpeting.
Character: American Bulldogs are friendly, happy lovable dogs with an assertiveness and confidence that never gets out of control. Though initially stubborn in training, they soon respond to their masters’ commands and prove to be endlessly faithful companions.
Temperament: American Bulldogs are loyal and loving animals that prefer to be with people. They do well with children, when socialized from a young age. May not do well with other dogs.
Care: The short coat requires infrequent bathing and brushing.
Training: This breed needs firm, consistent, but not harsh training. They are highly trainable and can be used as agility or search and rescue dogs.
Activity: American Bulldogs MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored American Bulldogs can make a shambles of your house and yard.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: American Bulldogs generally live from 10 to 16 years, and tend to be strong, physically active, and often healthy. Some health problems in American bulldogs are often found within certain genetic lines, and are not common to the entire breed, while others, such as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL),[1] Ichthyosis, disorders of the kidney and thyroid, ACL tears, hip dysplasia, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, entropion, ectropion, and bone cancer are more common to the general population of American Bulldogs. There are DNA tests available to help breeders screen breeding animals for NCL (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis)[1] and Ichthyosis. It is highly recommended to spend time to research your breeder information, including your American Bulldog's family history. A Penn Hip (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement project) or OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) screening is recommended for all potential breeding animals. Some breeds of American Bulldog are prone to allergies. Symptoms like a runny nose or a rash are examples of signs of allergies. Some vets recommend dog owners to give 25 mg of Benadryl per day; in most cases it helps.
Life Expectancy: 14-16

More About American Bulldog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Zoey is a playful and energetic born in 2010, 50 lb gal. She was recently busted out of boarding where she lived for the past 8 months. She had been living in an abandoned house with her sister Bella Boo, who was rescued at the same time. Now it is Zoey's turn. Zoey loves to play fetch, cuddle and go swimming. She is house trained and though she gets along with other dogs and cats, she is pretty sure she would want you all to herself. She does say that she MAY like an older and/or quieter furfriend... but maybe not! With her winning personality though, she may be all the dog you would need. Give her a bowl full of Nutro dog food, a cozy bed and a kiddie pool and watch her enjoy life. Due to Miami-Dade county regulations she cannot be adopted into this county. Adoption fee is $175 and includes DHPP & rabies vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, and microchip. All animals are examined by a veterinarian. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Margarita (AKA Daisy) has been through the wringer in her short life. According to the woman who rescued her, she had never lived in a house previously. She was originally found by people as a puppy, and her mother was hit and killed by a car. She was always kept outside of the house in a backyard filled with junk, but was given some food. The people lost their house to foreclosure, and moved on without Margarita. During the time that she lived outside that house she had at least 1 litter that we know about. When she came into the rescue initially she was heavily pregnant, and we raised and adopted out her babies. We tried placing Margarita as a service dog, but her background left her with too many fears. This girl has SO many wonderful qualities! She is completely housebroken and went through a detailed training program as she began service training, so she knows all basic commands and walks on a leash very well. At 28 pounds and born in 2015, this petite beauty is the perfect size! Margarita is submissive and dearly wants to please her people. She gets along wonderfully with children, other dogs, and cats. Her issues come from fear – she is nervous around strangers. She needs someone who is home a lot and can give her loads of reassurance and love. Don’t worry, baby, from here on you have nothing to be concerned about!!! Adoption fee is $175 and includes DHPP & rabies vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, and microchip. Found on the street by a Good Samaritan I was nothing but skin and bones.....haha. Here a year later, I'm a healthy 57 lbs of sweetness. Does loving toys to play with make me a goofball? If so, I'm guilty because I take my toys with me on walks.... Just to keep them close. I'll keep you close as well with cuddles and lots of slobbering doggie kisses to show my love. Now, when you take me home be patient with me. I'm going to be nervous in my new home with all new surroundings so give me time. If you have cats, no worries, I'm OK with them. Although, It may be best if I'm an only dog. We could always do a meet and greet to see how it would go. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I'm Cocoa! I'm just the BEST DOG, or so everyone says! I love to keep my foster mom company. She laughs because whether it's cooking dinner or doing laundry, I'm always right there to brighten her day and make her smile. When I'm extra lucky, she'll cuddle on the sofa with me. That's just the best! The cherry on top is when someone scratches me in the right spot… then I'll do a silly happy dance that makes everyone laugh! Everyone says I'm special because when I came into the rescue, I had a couple of puppies. The rescue had some younger puppies who didn't have a mama, and they were hoping I'd help them. AND I DID.. from the minute I saw them, I treated them like my very own babies. I helped to grow them big & strong and, now that they are adopted, I hope it's my turn soon. I'm amazing with dogs of all sizes, and I love cats too! I'm a smart girl, and have already learned basic commands and how to walk on a leash. I'm housetrained, healthy, and happy. I'm about 3 years old and weigh 45 pounds. I'm quite the catch, I must admit… so please do an application if you want to meet me! Adoption fee is $175 and includes DHPP & rabies vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, and microchip. All animals are examined by a veterinarian. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Rocco is an adorable little 10-lb and 10-year-old chihuahua mix that was surrendered to Good Karma. He is an easy-going guy who loves to either sit in your lap or play with his favorite squeaky ball. Rocco gets along well with other dogs and cats and will do with older children. We think he had some mistreatment in his life, and he can be nervous around new people and attention.. but as soon as you start petting him, he doesn't want you to stop! You will notice one of his eyes is colored blue. Our veterinarian said that it appears he had chemical damage to his eye, but he isn't in pain and we can't do anything about it, so it's just something that now makes Rocco extra unique. Adoption fee is $250 and includes DHPP & rabies vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, and microchip. All animals are examined by a veterinarian. rescue
      Breed: Italian Greyhuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Italian Greyhound / Mixed (short coat). Rocko is a 2 year old and 10 lb sweet and loyal dog. He gets along great with other dogs. He loves long walks and is very curious and full of energy. You will fall in love the moment you meet him. From his foster mom: Rocko needs a lot of attention, looks like nobody ever had played with him before. He doesn't know how to fetch. I would love for him a loving family that goes out with him to dog parks and take him on vacation too, like a family member. He was very anxious at the beginning, now that I earned his trust, I don't want him to get disappointed again. I fostered Rocko to notice that he was acting like a dog that had been mistreated by their prior owners before he was rescued. He seemed very scared and traumatized, getting stressed by every little noise and sudden movements of human beings around him, like if he had been physically punished before in the past. I also noticed that he was very anxious and nervous of small places, like a puppy that has been locked for long periods of time during his first two years of life. Therefore, his new owner should be very loving and sensitive with a dog that has recently learned to trust people because it took a lot of work, patience, love, and time. Evidently, this is a dog that has lots of love to give in return, he gets attached easily and would be all over you, waiting for you at all times and making you happy, as long as you give him the love, space, time, and respect that every dog deserves. Adoption fee is $250 and includes DHPP & rabies vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, and microchip. All animals are examined by a veterinarian. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sue Ellen is happy & loves life -- and wants to share it with you!!! Sue Ellen had a rough start. She came to us as a skinny new mom to eight sick puppies who were all stuck in a sweltering shelter that had no air conditioning. She was SO happy to leave the shelter she spent her whole freedom ride looking out the window and wagging her tail. Despite her beginnings, Sue Ellen turned out to be a VERY happy and sweet girl. She is a two year old, 40 pound lab/staffie mix. She loves attention from people, which we don't think she had much of in her former life unfortunately. She even loves to be bathed and toweled off! She is great with other dogs even when they aren't so great to her! She lives very peacefully with another 50 lb dog and three other 10 lb dogs in her foster home. Sue Ellen is house-trained. She is an easy going girl who likes to sit by you on the couch or snooze in her crate. If you want to be part of Sue Ellen's fairy tale please apply now! Adoption fee is $175 and includes DHPP & rabies vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, and microchip. All animals are examined by a veterinarian.
