Posted Breed: American Bulldog. Lilly was found as a stray and at 8 weeks old had a head injury. She is doing well and is an active, playful pup! She loves playing with other dogs, toys and especially loves the water. She is very animated and loving. She needs basic training and it might take a little longer for her to understand things, but she has made great progress already. PLEASE NOTE: We require all interested parties to come to the shelter to meet the pet, complete an adoption application, and interview with our Director. We do not do same day adoptions or ship animals. For additional information on our adoption policies, visiting hours and directions please go to Abandoned Pet Rescue.

American Bulldog

Overview: Originally used in the 17th century for bull baiting—a wagering sport in which dogs fought bulls in a ring—Bulldogs had taller, more athletic frames (much like the Olde English Bulldogge). When bull baiting was outlawed in 1835, Bulldogs were bred to be kinder, heavier and more relaxed. However, American Bulldogs—which were brought to the U.S. before this breeding pattern—retained the size and strength of the original Bulldogs. Great family dogs, American Bulldogs are sweet to children. They love family-oriented occasions and want to be involved. With proper training and socialization, you’ll find them outgoing and exceedingly loyal. Some American Bulldogs will go to great lengths to protect their masters. Tough and determined, American Bulldogs have an impressive stamina and strength. They are always game for playtime in the back yard or working in the field.
Breed Group: Non-Sporting
Weight (lbs): male-70-120 female-60-100
Height (in): 19-27
Colors: white, brindle, brown, red or tan
Coat: Short, coarse coat. For such a short haired dog, American Bulldogs shed more than you might think. Their short coarse hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing, upholstery, and carpeting.
Character: American Bulldogs are friendly, happy lovable dogs with an assertiveness and confidence that never gets out of control. Though initially stubborn in training, they soon respond to their masters’ commands and prove to be endlessly faithful companions.
Temperament: American Bulldogs are loyal and loving animals that prefer to be with people. They do well with children, when socialized from a young age. May not do well with other dogs.
Care: The short coat requires infrequent bathing and brushing.
Training: This breed needs firm, consistent, but not harsh training. They are highly trainable and can be used as agility or search and rescue dogs.
Activity: American Bulldogs MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored American Bulldogs can make a shambles of your house and yard.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: American Bulldogs generally live from 10 to 16 years, and tend to be strong, physically active, and often healthy. Some health problems in American bulldogs are often found within certain genetic lines, and are not common to the entire breed, while others, such as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL),[1] Ichthyosis, disorders of the kidney and thyroid, ACL tears, hip dysplasia, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, entropion, ectropion, and bone cancer are more common to the general population of American Bulldogs. There are DNA tests available to help breeders screen breeding animals for NCL (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis)[1] and Ichthyosis. It is highly recommended to spend time to research your breeder information, including your American Bulldog's family history. A Penn Hip (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement project) or OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) screening is recommended for all potential breeding animals. Some breeds of American Bulldog are prone to allergies. Symptoms like a runny nose or a rash are examples of signs of allergies. Some vets recommend dog owners to give 25 mg of Benadryl per day; in most cases it helps.
Life Expectancy: 14-16

More About American Bulldog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

    • Mal-Shi Dog For Adoption in Fort Lauderdale, FL

      Guiness

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mal-Shi
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Maltese / Mixed. Guiness was surrendered to us by his owners when they ran into financial issues. He is about 6 to 7 years old, but Guiness needs to go to a home with an experienced dog owner. He loves children, probably because he was in a home with one. Guiness is food motivated but whoever adopts him needs to go slow and give him time to adjust to a new home and family. Guiness needs to be visited several times, he is insecure and may bite if he is uncomfortable. UPDATE: Guiness has been with us quite a few years, and even though he is adorable he is still fearful and defensive. He LOVES a few people very much and does well with them, however, he does not like to be handled. If you can devote a lot of time and effort to him, he could be a good dog - but it will be a large committment. PLEASE NOTE: We require all interested parties to come to the shelter to meet the pet, complete an adoption application, and interview with our Director. We do not do same day adoptions or ship animals. For additional information on our adoption policies, visiting hours and directions please go to Abandoned Pet Rescue.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed. Shannon was a rescue from the hoarding situation in Ft Lauderdale. She is most likely the daughter of Sourpatch. She is sweet and gentle, however she is also timid and shy. She and the other dogs she lived with did not have a regular type home, it was very crowded and not clean. Shannon can now walk well on leash, and responds to people she knows but is still undisciplined. Don't judge a book by its cover...Shannon will appear to be a little aggressive inside her run but is completely different outside her run. She would do better with an experienced dog owner that can teach her basic commands. Shannon is estimated at 3 to 4 years old and about 50 pounds. She deserves a loving forever home. She has come from a horrible situation Please come & meet Shannon (out of her run). You will be pleasantly surprised! PLEASE NOTE: We require all interested parties to come to the shelter to meet the pet, complete an adoption application, and interview with our Director. We do not do same day adoptions or ship animals. For additional information on our adoption policies, visiting hours and directions please go to Abandoned Pet Rescue.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed. Sourpatch was known as Sugar when picked up with the other dogs she was hoarded with in Ft Lauderdale a year and a half ago. She is most likely Shannon's mother. She has come a long way and now can walk well on leash, plays with other dogs and likes people. Don't judge a book by its cover... Sourpatch may seem a little aggressive in her run but out of her run she is a sweet girl! She does need some training with her basic commands & is eager to learn. She has come from a horrible situation & really deserves a chance at a happy, loving life in a forever home. She longs for a family of her own to love. An experienced dog person who can work with her commands would be best for her or even group training. Sourpatch is probably 4 to 5 years old and is about 50 pounds. Please come & meet Sourpatch (out of her kennel). She is waiting for you! Posted Breed: Shar Pei / Shepherd / Mixed. Kingston is considered a special needs dog. He is very timid and fearful and needs an experienced dog person. He needs gentle encouragement and training - he does get along well with other dogs, but because of his background, we feel a home where he is the only dog would be best. He needs to be in an adult only home. No kids or cats please. Kingston needs a tall fenced yard, front and back and a safe area away from busy streets. He needs someone very patient to work with him, taking baby steps. Are you that person? He seems to have just this one little issue of being heartworm positive; we have already started his treatment and he is adjusting very well. Marlin probably has been overlooked because he is heartworm positive BUT he is doing well on his medicine. If you want a big lovable guy who loves to please, if you have a fenced in yard... Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Fiona and Fontina appear to be a mother and daughter who were both found by one of our volunteers late one Sunday evening in the Pompano area. No owners have come for them. They are both very sweet, lively and have lots and always have a kiss for anyone who comes to visit them. Both of them are about 50 pounds and are full grown. Fiona is about 3 years old and Fontina is about 1 year old. Does not like cats. Fiona is a real sweetheart! She loves attention, walks good on a leash & tries to let you know when it is potty time. She went out on a large dog event & did very well; she likes people. Fiona probably would do best being the only dog although she does get along with other large dogs, and older children as she doesn't realize she could knock down a toddler. A fenced in yard would also be nice for her. Come & meet Fiona, she's been at the shelter for a while getting passed by. She just keeps hoping someone will notice how pretty she is! PLEASE NOTE: We require all interested parties to come to the shelter to meet the pet, complete an adoption application, and interview with our Director. We do not do same day adoptions or ship animals. For additional information on our adoption policies, visiting hours and directions please go to Abandoned Pet Rescue.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / American Bulldog / Mixed. Neo is a volunteer favorite. Neo and his partner Coco were left at our front door one early morning. We believe the owners were a homeless couple. They left a note and the man spent a long time taking care of them before leaving them at the door. He obviously cared and loved them. He petted and kissed them and spent a great deal of time with them. He left them at the door and went to get them a large bowl of water as they waited patiently and wagged their tails the entire time. Then he did leave and we were left with a note about their names and what good dogs they are (which they are.) Please find it in your hearts to give Neo (Coco has been adopted) a forever home - he loves people and is a very calm, sweet dog. Neo is still praying every day that someone will notice him & give him a forever loving home. He is a very sweet senior (no cats please) who very much deserves to be loved. Neo is a very good car rider, too! PLEASE NOTE: We require all interested parties to come to the shelter to meet the pet, complete an adoption application, and interview with our Director.
