Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). This most delightful and mature dog was brought into our program after we received an email that he was in a kill shelter. The staff there fell in love with him, letting us know how incredible he is, and so he was saved. He is currently in a foster home, and we are told is the easiest house guest! He loves all people and all dogs, is mellow and a lovely companion. He would fit in just about any household. Here is a note from Gunnar’s foster mom: Gunnar is doing great in his new foster home! He is such an affectionate and social guy. He loves being around people and is always looking to be as close to you as possible. His favorite thing to do is to lay on his back to have his belly rubbed. He enjoys being with his other two foster siblings and gets along well with them. For an older guy, don’t let that fool you, he is still active and enjoys playing with toys and sun bathing in the warm weather! He does great in his kennel and is potty trained. He listens so well and is overall just an easy going guy. He would be a great addition to any family!

American Bulldog

Overview: Originally used in the 17th century for bull baiting—a wagering sport in which dogs fought bulls in a ring—Bulldogs had taller, more athletic frames (much like the Olde English Bulldogge). When bull baiting was outlawed in 1835, Bulldogs were bred to be kinder, heavier and more relaxed. However, American Bulldogs—which were brought to the U.S. before this breeding pattern—retained the size and strength of the original Bulldogs. Great family dogs, American Bulldogs are sweet to children. They love family-oriented occasions and want to be involved. With proper training and socialization, you’ll find them outgoing and exceedingly loyal. Some American Bulldogs will go to great lengths to protect their masters. Tough and determined, American Bulldogs have an impressive stamina and strength. They are always game for playtime in the back yard or working in the field.
Breed Group: Non-Sporting
Weight (lbs): male-70-120 female-60-100
Height (in): 19-27
Colors: white, brindle, brown, red or tan
Coat: Short, coarse coat. For such a short haired dog, American Bulldogs shed more than you might think. Their short coarse hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing, upholstery, and carpeting.
Character: American Bulldogs are friendly, happy lovable dogs with an assertiveness and confidence that never gets out of control. Though initially stubborn in training, they soon respond to their masters’ commands and prove to be endlessly faithful companions.
Temperament: American Bulldogs are loyal and loving animals that prefer to be with people. They do well with children, when socialized from a young age. May not do well with other dogs.
Care: The short coat requires infrequent bathing and brushing.
Training: This breed needs firm, consistent, but not harsh training. They are highly trainable and can be used as agility or search and rescue dogs.
Activity: American Bulldogs MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored American Bulldogs can make a shambles of your house and yard.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: American Bulldogs generally live from 10 to 16 years, and tend to be strong, physically active, and often healthy. Some health problems in American bulldogs are often found within certain genetic lines, and are not common to the entire breed, while others, such as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL),[1] Ichthyosis, disorders of the kidney and thyroid, ACL tears, hip dysplasia, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, entropion, ectropion, and bone cancer are more common to the general population of American Bulldogs. There are DNA tests available to help breeders screen breeding animals for NCL (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis)[1] and Ichthyosis. It is highly recommended to spend time to research your breeder information, including your American Bulldog's family history. A Penn Hip (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement project) or OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) screening is recommended for all potential breeding animals. Some breeds of American Bulldog are prone to allergies. Symptoms like a runny nose or a rash are examples of signs of allergies. Some vets recommend dog owners to give 25 mg of Benadryl per day; in most cases it helps.
Life Expectancy: 14-16

More About American Bulldog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Harper got her wings from the angels above. A delightful girl with a dance in her step, a quiet demeanor and a yearning for a family to call her own. She gets quite the raves from the folks at the boarding facility. She’s always up for a leisurely stroll or a car ride to a new adventure. She minds her p’s and q’s and never misses an opportunity for a snuggle. Little dogs are not her favorite and she does best with older kids.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We think Zach is around 3 years old. He’s a playful, sweet and generous guy who is quick to share his love with anyone and everyone. He’s an agreeable boy who is very settled in a home environment. No housebreaking necessary, already crate trained and knows a few tricks of his own. So far Zach hasn’t met a dog he didn’t like but has come into contact with a few who didn’t like him but he didn’t let that deter him from being his happy, confident self. Zach is a dog you have to meet in person. He’s a low rider with coloring that reminds us of autumn leaves. His raccoon tail is unique and he uses his permanent boo boo face to his fullest advantage. Always up for a car ride and a new adventure.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Bruce is a dog who is impossible to meet without falling in love! He is a big-headed, big-hearted, sweet and loyal guy. Bruce was abandoned in a city park and spent several months fending for himself. He was frightened, lonely and in bad shape, but has since soaked up every bit of love like a sponge. He loves people with every fiber of his being and wants to lay his big soft head on your lap. He loves to go for walks, play in the yard and hang out with the other three dogs that live in his foster home. His very best animal friend is a Chihuahua, with whom he enjoys sleeping and licking, but he also loves to play tug of war with the big male dog that he lives with. He loves to play with people too, and squeaky toys are a special passion. He is perfectly potty-trained and doesn’t chew anything that isn’t his. Bruce needs a home with people who want to spend a lot of time with him. His sun rises and sets in his human companions. He has lots of energy and needs daily exercise to burn it off. Bruce loves the kiddos but cats are a no-go for him.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). We are welcoming Harlem (originally known as Gypsy) back to MABBR. She was originally adopted out in 2011 when she was 12 weeks old. Due to a divorce in the family, they were no longer able to keep her. Mellie, a former MABBR alumni and Harlem’s mom, have been reunited after 4 years. This is what we know about Harlem so far: She is beautiful! Incredibly sweet. Loves car rides. She is outstanding on her leash. She does not pull at all and even looks back at you while she is walking – we love that. Harlem received a lot of attention while we were walking and greeted everyone, including small children, very well. Harlem lived with six children, the youngest being two years old. Harlem’s former family says she does well with the kids and that they trusted her with them and don’t worry about her being snippy or corrective. We will update as we get to know our girl again.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Louise (along with 8 other babies) was born on May 25, 2014. MABBR was asked to take 6 of these little darlings by a fellow rescuer, and once we saw their pictures and heard their story, it was hard to say no. Louise has really blossomed into a fun and spunky young pup. She loves going for walks, playing with her foster siblings, and napping on the couch. Louise is food motivated and a quick learner. She already has several basic obedience commands under her belt! Louise is kid-friendly, housebroken, crate-trained, fully vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped.
