If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Dutch Shepherd / Elkhound / Mixed (long coat). This little lady is as sweet as pie. This little lady was found as a stray. She may be around 5 years old. She is fully vetted, heartworm negative and housebroken. Her foster mom reports that all Holly wants is love and affection. She can be left for a few hours without any issue. Holly does have a severe limp, due to an injury to her right front leg that was apparently never treated. The vet says there is nerve damage to that leg. Although she limps, it doesn't stop her from getting around. She can even do a few steps. We are working on getting her a brace to help her walk better outside. Holly is overweight, but we have her on a diet now. Beyond her physical handicap, she is the PERFECT dog for a quiet family or older person who wants a loyal companion. Call Janet at 706-897-0386 to meet our Holly girl.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Beautiful male black lab Meet our Big Boy Blue- a stunningly beautiful black lag. Blue was surrendered because he chased and caught a rabbit!! He was only following his instincts. Blue is fully vetted and heartworm negative. He's about 2-3 yrs old and weighs 68 lbs. Blue is playful and loves people, but he is strong and will need someone to work on his basic obedience. He would be fine with teenage kids or older, only because of his size and strength If you are looking for a great dog to complete your family, ask to meet Blue. If you have other dogs, a meet and greet would be required. Cats or other small animals would not be recommended around Blue.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Melvin needs a special person who can look beyond the physical Not every dog is perfect, but every dog deserves the perfect home. Melvin was hours away from being put to death in a high kill shelter. Melvin was picked on by other dogs, and had severe wounds, in addition to a severe skin condition. He has been receiving on going medical attention, but due to the neglect and having the conditions go untreated for so long, Melvin may never win a beauty contest. But he's not letting that stop him from trying to find a new home. He's a fun guy, who loves attention. His favorite toy is a deflated basketball, that he carries around with him! We love this guy. Maybe you will too. Melvin is fully vetted and microchipped too.

He recently had eyelid entropion surgery to correct a common condition. He is fully healed and ready to go home.

Azlan, is around 3 years old. He has been in foster care for a few months. He's housebroken and gets along no great with he family dog. He's very afraid of loud noises and often slinks to the ground thinking you're going to beat him. But, he is one of the most loving dogs I've ever been around. He's extremely intelligent, obedient and very gentle. He loves everyone he meets! His foster reports that several times a day, he comes up to his office chair and just stands next to him, with his chin in his lap and waits to be petted. AZLAN can walk outside without a leash and he is very attentive. I believe he is a very special animal and that whoever gets him is hitting the pet lottery! According to the foster, he isn't always dog friendly so introductions need to be made slowly, but he has shown that he loves other dogs once he gets to know them. He has not been cat tested.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). A loveable female pibble This sweet pibble, Betty Mae, was found as a stray and taken to our local Animal Control. She had recently given birth to pups. Betty Mae stayed in AC for a year!! She was just such a sweet girl that they waited and waited for a rescue to step up. Castoff got her in early Oct, 2016. Betty Mae is a love machine!! She looks at you with those eyes and your heart melts. She is really good walking on leash and rides well in the car. Betty would be fine with older kids, but we don't recommend cats. She likes to choose her own doggie friends, so a meet and greet with your dog would be a must. But where humans are concerned, she loves everyone! Come meet this special girl who deserves a second chance for a forever home.

But, being the hound he is, following his nose where ever it leads is what he wants to do. Albert would be a good candidate for obedience training and a very tall fence would be a plus. Albert weighs about 55 lbs and we think would be fine with other dogs and possibly older kids.
