More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He accepts handling and overall is an easy keeper. Brady is light heartworm positive (he is nearly through slow kill treatment). Speak with the shelter and your vet about completing his treatment. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. A total people-lover, Junior has a "no holds barred" approach to life. Breed: Mastiff-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed. It is hard to believe someone lost this big girl, but its true - she was found roaming. Though definitely of a mastiff type, she is not as huge as a full mastiff (tho she isn't dainty either - she is 78#). She is very sweet and wants to be a lap dog, so be prepared! She does need plenty of exercise and attention to avoid turning her teeth toward destructive enterprises. Also, being big and clumsy, she would be a poor choice for a family with young children. She has done well with a Great Dane and another mastiff mix, but not with a smaller dog. If you have a dog her size, that may work out. But on the other hand, she might be all the dog you need! "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application. Breed: Mountain Cur-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Mountain Cur / Mixed. Abby is a darling little girl. A shy girl, she comes around well to love and kind words and becomes very loyal and an absolute cuddle bug. She walks nicely on leash. Although nervous when kenneled with other dogs, she is submissive to them while out and about. With confidence and love, she will blossom. She loves belly rubs, and her gorgeous coat glistens in the sun! Abby will need a quiet home since new and noisy things are scary for her. She hasn't decided whether kitties are scary or nice, but shows no aggression toward them at all. Est DOB: Oct 2013 Intake Weight: 37# "Adult" is at least 3 years old. Posted Breed: Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Cute Aubie is full of fun and love. She is a trickster girl and loves her games of "keep away" yet will always come running for treats and sweet talk. She likes her walks and grooming sessions. Having grown up at the shelter, Aubie does need to adjust to new things. She is more cautious of unfamiliar men and of children, and new situations. She is loving and loyal to those she knows. Aubie does best with submissive and sensible dogs; high energy or assertive dogs upset her. http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. He is very treat motivated and tries hard to please. When asked to "sit" and "wait" you can just see how hard he works at self control - good boy!
