More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Charles Bark...

      Breed: Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male

Posted Breed: Bulldog / Mixed. Hi! My name is Charles, but you can call me Charlie. At least that’s what my foster mom calls me. She says she calls me that because I remind her of the famous basketball player Charles Barkley, with my round head and big muscles. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not! She also says I have the best, most kissable squish face she has ever seen. I don’t want to brag, but I’ve been told I’m a pretty handsome dude who LOVES other dogs. I can be shy and a little afraid at first, but other dogs help me be brave. My ideal forever home would have at least one other dog in it. I really need a big brother or sister who can help show me the ropes as I take a lot of cues from other dogs. I currently live with two other dogs. Did I also tell you that I LOVE kids. I think those little dudes are so much fun to snuggle with and eat treats with. Don’t worry, I don’t steal food from them, I wait patiently in my silly bulldog squat until I am offered my treat. I am very food/treat motivated so you can get me to do almost anything if you offer me a treat. I’m currently working with my foster mom on some basic commands, crating, leash walking, and rules around the house. One of my favorite things to do is chew, chew, and did I tell you I love to chew!! My foster sister and I are really big chewers and we share bones and chew toys like crazy. We spend most of our days running around in the yard or on the couch chewing on our bones. I’m really a pretty laid back and chill dude. I am a lazy bulldog after all! Before I came to ARLP I hadn’t been trained to potty outside so I am working on that. I have zero accidents in my crate while my foster mom is at work, and if taken out regularly, I don't really have accidents in the house either. Again, those yummy treats come in handy and I’m eager to please! Since I didn't receive much socialization to new things the first few months of my life, what I really need from my new family is patience. I need people who will continue to help me grow and not put me in situations that are way more than I can handle. Most everything outside is new to me and can be a little scary. Trying to walk with me on a busy street might not be ideal, but a quiet path in the park may be right up my alley. I'm getting braver every day though! I’m also very much for cuddling with you on the couch and watching Netflix where I can sprawl out and chew on my bone. If you are looking for a handsome, cuddly, bone-loving Bulldog who will love you unconditionally, I’m the guy for you! I’m really excited to find a family to call my own and I will be the best Bulldog they could ask for! Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / American Pit Bull Terrier. YUM! This delicious chocolatly, chunka hunk is the sweet treat you have been dreaming about. O.Henry is approximately 5 years old, sugar sweet and oh so easy to be with. He is a warm and affectionate boy who came to us already house trained and knowing a handful of commands, suggesting that he once lived as a family member in a home. If you are looking for a simple, happy uncomplicated boy – O.Henry could be the one for you. Follow O.Henry's adventures while he is looking for a home on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/TheCNPGang/ A few fun things to know about this adorable boy: He is popular with the ladies & the laddies too He tries very hard to fit himself into available laps - which takes some finesse He is a sweetheart who calls everyone a friend He likes to wear his coat and boots, seriously he really does He would adore being a part of a family who would shower him with attention He really, really likes to be the center of attention He loves a good meal; if you have food on the counter he will thank you for providing a tasty snack He has mastered - "The art of the drool" He's been doing well with his dog friends – he is all about the chill and hang, not so much about the doggie play He would love to have a home all to himself but if you insisted he would also be ok with another dog as long as they were laid back and not interested in stealing his spotlight He may be a big boy, but he has a very sensitive soul He loves to go on car rides He loves to take walks, followed by long car rides He loves to take walks, followed by long car rides that end up at the drive through If you're interested in adopting this dog, please view our Placement Process and to fill out an online application. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Bulldog / Mixed. Middle Aged Male Seeks Life-Long Companionship Full disclosure, I’m not really into this whole internet dating thing. I didn’t even want to write this, my foster mom made me do it. I’m cool with the set-up we have going on, but she says I’m a gown up man and it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. So here it goes… I’m an outdoorsy kind of guy. I love to explore the local trails, get a little dirt under my nails, and lounge in the sun. Picnics are awesome too. Food is awesome. I’d consider myself health-conscious; I eat a lot of those tall, green leafy vegetables that grow all over in the yard and I try to stay in shape. I believe in equal division of labor in the household and make it a point to help with daily chores. Right now my jobs are crumb catcher, toy extractor, yard marker, jester, critter chaser-awayer, and human exerciser. I’m willing to do most things to help out. I’m a sensitive guy, a bit introverted, and tend to be shy around new people. I need to get a few good, strong cookies in me if I’m going to really open myself up to somebody on the first date. But stick around long enough, and we’ll be cuddling together before long. I’m not really a fan of cats. I don’t get the attraction you humans have to them. I've met a few kids. They have been ok, the smaller ones seem to smell a bit funny. I'd be open to having some older children, I think. I still startle at, and run away from, some movements and noises. Those kid things don't seem to always know what their body's are doing, so long-term living situations with the smaller ones may not be enjoyable. Let my mom know if you are interested in setting up a date. She’s in charge of this thing. I’m letting her play matchmaker. I trust her judgement.
