More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: Golden Valley, MN
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Sex: Male Pit Bull/Boxer/Labrador mix Age: 15 months Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: Yes Good with kids: Yes – probably older kids because I don’t always realize how strong I am or where my legs are. Weight: 75 lbs Name/Nicknames: Leo What’s your sign? I’m Leo – and my foster Mom thinks that fits perfectly. I’m friendly and outgoing, confident and curious, and always the life of the party. I’m super excited to see everyone and make a strong first impression. I’m what you would call a “Mystery Mix of Deliciousness”. You can tell I’m part Pit Bull because I have no sense of personal space (I really like to snuggle). And I’m part Boxer because when I play with other dogs, I like to stand on my back legs and get into the action with my front legs, like a boxing match. I have the retrieving skills of the most accomplished Labrador and the deep baritone voice of a Hound. I might even be part Bunny because I have a flop ear and I’m super soft. Whatever else I am, I’m positive I’m 100% awesome! Hobbies: I Iove to play. Fetch and Tug are my specialties. I can play for hours and hours without taking a break. I always bring the ball back so that you can throw it again for me. And when I want to play tug, I’ll bring one of my ropes to you and give you a little nudge. I’ve usually got a rope in my mouth, anyway. I also love to snuggle. If we’re just hanging out, I’d like to be touching you. Just having my head resting on your foot is enough, but I’d prefer to be snuggled up against you. I will sleep in my kennel, but isn’t it nice to snuggle up to a super soft bunny at night? I’d like to promise that I won’t hog the whole bed, but that’s not exactly true. I’m pretty flexible and am willing to use anything as a pillow – your ankle, your hip, your head, the cat, . . . pretty much anything works for me! Tricks/Commands: I’m multi-talented talented – I know Come, Sit, Down, Stay, and even Shake Hands. Now I’m learning to walk nicely on a leash and spin in a circle. I have a fairly reliable recall – I know my name and will quickly return to your side when it’s time to check in with my people. Crate Trained: Yes – but if people are home, I’d really prefer to be playing and snuggling with them rather than being in a crate. If you give me a bone or a Kong, though, I’m perfectly happy to chew on it in my crate. Potty Trained: Yes – zero accidents in the house or my crate. I even know how to ring the bell by the door to tell people that I want to go outside. Although the bell isn’t just for the potty thing -- I have a tendency to use that bell whenever I want to go outside to play with my people, too. Can’t blame a guy for trying. Activity Level: Moderate to high, I am a young boy after all. I can play fetch for hours without a break, but if I can’t get anyone to play with me, the next best thing is snuggling up next to someone and taking a nap. I will adjust to the activity level of the house. Socialization/who I currently live with: I currently live with my foster mom, 7 balls, 5 rope/tug toys, my canine sister and a couple of cats. The cats don’t really interest me, but there is one cat here that makes a nice pillow. Interesting things about me: I don’t like to eat alone. I will let my foster mom take my food bowl away without objection, but I’m not a fan of the cats trying to get their grubby little paws in my food. So I’ve been eating in a separate room. I’m patient and I’ll wait to eat my food until I have some company. You can tell me all about your day while I’m eating, and then you can go throw the ball for me. Doesn’t that sound like the perfect evening? What am I looking for: I would love to live with a family that understood the importance of throwing the ball for me. I like to chase balls of all sizes and colors– it doesn’t matter, as long as we can run and play. I can keep kids entertained and wear them out, but it would be best if the kids were a bit older since I am pretty big and strong. I don’t always realize how strong I am, and sometimes I lose track of where my feet are so I could easily knock down the little ones. I’m OK if there are other animals in the house. I don’t chase cats or really pay any attention to them at all, unless they want to snuggle with me. I get along well with other dogs, but as long as you’re willing to play with me and let me snuggle you, I’d be happy as the only dog in the house. I really just want someone to love me and give me a forever home . If you're interested in adopting this dog, please view our Placement Process and to fill out an online application. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier. Dirk is a silly, happy boy who loves to run, jump and play fetch. When no one plays with him, he throws his toys and plays fetch with himself. Very high energy! He loves, loves loves his toys. Like a little baby, he’s a snuggler who’ll just roll up around you while you scratch his belly. Dirk is good with kids, but with his size and how fast he moves, he may accidentally knock a small person over. He is also good with dogs and passed the cat test. Dirk is fully housebroken, superbly crate-trained, and does not make a peep in his kennel. Floppy, fun, sweet and smart, Dirk is an awesome dog! Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Bulldog / Mixed. Middle Aged Male Seeks Life-Long Companionship Full disclosure, I’m not really into this whole internet dating thing. I didn’t even want to write this, my foster mom made me do it. I’m cool with the set-up we have going on, but she says I’m a gown up man and it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. So here it goes… I’m an outdoorsy kind of guy. I love to explore the local trails, get a little dirt under my nails, and lounge in the sun. Picnics are awesome too. Food is awesome. I’d consider myself health-conscious; I eat a lot of those tall, green leafy vegetables that grow all over in the yard and I try to stay in shape. I believe in equal division of labor in the household and make it a point to help with daily chores. Right now my jobs are crumb catcher, toy extractor, yard marker, jester, critter chaser-awayer, and human exerciser. I’m willing to do most things to help out. I’m a sensitive guy, a bit introverted, and tend to be shy around new people. I need to get a few good, strong cookies in me if I’m going to really open myself up to somebody on the first date. But stick around long enough, and we’ll be cuddling together before long. I’m not really a fan of cats. I don’t get the attraction you humans have to them. I've met a few kids. They have been ok, the smaller ones seem to smell a bit funny. I'd be open to having some older children, I think. I still startle at, and run away from, some movements and noises. Those kid things don't seem to always know what their body's are doing, so long-term living situations with the smaller ones may not be enjoyable. Let my mom know if you are interested in setting up a date. She’s in charge of this thing. I’m letting her play matchmaker. I trust her judgement.
