More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Rottweiler. Adoption Fee: 350.00. Rugby is as absurdly lovable as a bull in a china shop can be. This boy is true diamond in the rough. With the exuberance of your typical 2 year old Rottie boy, and a complete lack of respect for personal space, he will test your patience and then turn his adorkable goofy smile on you and all is forgiven. Rugby is looking for a home with the patience, structure, and consistency to help him through his terrible twos - and that home will be richly rewarded with a heart as big as his enormous head. That heart is always in the right place, but we can’t guarantee his feet will be. No cats or small kids (14+ please) for this young man as his manners just aren’t ready for them...but playful, easy going dogs who won’t be offended by his lack of manners will find a great rough and tumble companion. Posted Breed: Rottweiler. Adoption Fee: 350.00. Sex: Male Age: 2 Years Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: No Good with kids: Yes, would prefer older kids. Weight: 85 lbs Name/Nicknames: Oak Hobbies: I love to play fetch. I think it’s so great that I get to go get a ball and then bring it to you and then you throw it for me. It makes me really happy. Also, if you decide you don’t want to throw it for me, I’ll throw it for myself. Tricks/Commands: Come, Sit, Down, Crate, High Five, Potty, Stay Crate Trained: Yes Potty Trained: Yes Activity Level: Moderate. I enjoy a good walk, or a good retrieval session. Fun things I do: I like to hang out in my crate, I go in there with no problems. I also like to play with my foster parents and siblings. I’m really good at tug and fetch. Sometimes I play fetch with myself. I also love any kind of toys that squeak. They make my whole day. I love it when people pet me. I also am really awesome at cuddling. Socialization/who I currently live with: I currently live with my foster parents, two teenagers, a spicy 10 pound Min-Pin named Rojo and a medium sized dog named Hannah. Interesting things about me: My foster mom said I’m extremely smart, and that I listen really well. Notes from my foster Mom: “Oak is a young male Rottie boy. Large in size, and some would say “the perfect rottie specimen”. He is handsome and charming. This boy is a lover, he lays his big head right on your lap asking for “the pets”. Oak is a world class snuggler, he will willfully cuddle with you all day if he could. We also think he was an all star athlete in his past life, because he loves to play and his ball catching skills are top notch. If you have toys that squeak, you have his attention!“ Notes from my Case Manager: “Oak will require an experienced handler who has had other Rottweilers before and is familiar with the breed. He seems to have some issues with new people at the front door. This is avoidable by crating him until they come in, and then letting him out. It’s not with all people, but he can definitely be intimidating if he isn’t being managed properly during that time. With that being said, this boy is a quick learner and a very smart dog. He comes with free training! He just needs some structure and manners. “ If you're interested in adopting this dog, please view our Placement Process and to fill out an online application. Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier. Adoption Fee: $350.00. Hi, my name is Shelby! I'm about 2 years old and a super teeny, tiny lovable pitty girl! I'm the happiest girl you will ever meet. I have lots of energy and love to explore when I go on walks, around the yard, and around the house. I'm also one of the best cuddle buddy's you will ever meet. I enjoy lounging around on my dog bed with a bone and snuggling on the couch watching Netflix. I also don't mind being in my crate as long as I have a chew bone or toy to keep me occupied. I am crate trained and I do fantastic in it at night for bed, and during the day while my foster mom is at work. With time, I could be left out to roam free because I don't tend to destroy anything I'm not supposed to. I am also completely potty trained with no accidents in the house since I came to stay with my foster mom. I currently live with two resident dogs. They are pretty fantastic. I would do well in a home with another dog, but could also be an only dog as I love my human attention just as much! I'm not too cat friendly, because I like to play tag, so a home without a cat would be best. I adore the little humans. They are the best! My favorite person ever is my foster mom's 8 year old nephew! He's so amazing. I love to snuggle him on the couch and I follow him everywhere. He's my bestest friend ever! I would do best in a home with children over 8 years of age. I love car rides and I am on my very best behavior while riding in the car. But that may be because I know we get to go to DQ and get a pup cup. Did I mention I love ice cream, and treats, and food. I am very treat motivated and know lots of commands and signs including, sit, stay, shake, high five, lay down, etc. I definitely aim to please! I'm ready for my forever home, so fill out an App and come meet me! A Note from Shelby's Foster Mom: As can sometimes happen, we don't see a dog's true personality until a few weeks/months after they are brought into our care. We have recently found that Shelby has some social anxiety. She does not do well in large group settings. She gets a little fearful and will bark pretty heavily, especially if she is startled. This typically suggests she can't be taken to the dog park, sit on a patio with people around, or walked on a busy street. Meeting new people in the house seems to make her a little uneasy as well, so I just tend to put her in her crate while people enter the house and let her calm down before I let her out. She is perfectly fine once I do that. With proper training and some structured rules, Shelby is going to make a great member of the family. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier. Adoption Fee: 350.00. Hi there I'm Kenai. I'm named after a city in Alaska, maybe you can take me there someday. I've been told I'm a pretty cool dog and I'm pretty darn smart. I know what my kennel is and I go in there to sleep during the day and at night. I'd rather sleep in the bed with the humans, but I'll go in and quiet down at night and be super excited to see you in the morning. I'm a pretty good guard dog, and I'll let you know if something is amiss outside. Given I'm so alert though, I might do best in a house, because if I was in an apartment I might let you know too often that your neighbors are being noisy :). I have to be honest, I'm kind of a jerk when I meet new dogs, but after some slow introductions and treats I've gotten along well with the couple of dogs I've hung out with and now I love sleeping on the dog couch with my foster sister. I even eat next to her and share licks of peanut butter on a spoon. I also think I'm going to go to a class to do some more work on my "issue." Lets see, what else is cool about me... I know where to go potty, and if you forget I'll let you know when I need to go out. If you are into exercise, I would love to go for runs with you. I play fetch like a champ and if you have a fenced in yard I would love to chase my huge ball around the yard - I can exercise myself :). I've spent some time with little humans and I just kind of ignore them, but I'm kind of a block head and could knock them over so I should probably hang out with older kids. I don't mind baths. Did I also mention I love to go for rides? I love to look out the window for awhile but then I go to sleep if we are going for a long ride. And man do I know how to cuddle...
