Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This beauty has been in Kennel for over a YEAR!! Sara is almost 2 years old...absolutely BEAUTIFUL! She has a very unique cream and tan brindle coloring. She is a strong girl, needs some manners and is very food motivated. She is ready to learn and be spoiled rotten. She would do best in a home as the only dog. She was such a good girl when we were taking her pics. Just wanted to be loved. She had been living alone for over a month in McClure PA when her owners were incarcerated.

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie / Mixed (long coat). Hi! I'm Second short for Second Chance. That's my new name to go with my new life!!! I was tied outside to a box for my whole life. People wanted to rescue me (and fed me) for the past two years and my former owner wouldn't give me up. They had a house fire in Oct. and they left..but they left me there tied to my box in yard. My New Mom named me "Second Chance". I get to live inside now!!! I'm doing really well inside despite the fact that I'm blind. I like the other dogs in my house, but they don't know I can't see. I get scared when they bump into me, and sometimes snap (hollar) at them. There are kitties in my new house too...I don't mind them at all..they are afraid of me..I think, and I can't see them. I like a house that is simple, and doesn't change the furniture around. I love attention!!! I would like to have a person all for myself! I don't need a big yard or a fence just someone who will love me, and show me around. To read more of my story check out what I wrote (with Mom's help) on my Mom's facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/notes/pamela-j-klinger/second-chance/1281719531849717

      Rudy

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Lewistown, PA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Rudy is a Chi or Chi mix, estimated to be between 1-3 years old. He was a stray caught after at least one month of ... running on his own between mid November and mid December. HUGE Thanks to ALL the ladies who worked tirelessly to trap him, networked to find owner and foster him. They could not believe how he survived the weather, hawks, coyotes, and car and school bus traffic in Westmoreland County PA, but he did. His rescuers all agreed he looked like a tiny fawn, and being a Christmas miracle, they named him Rudy (for Rudolph). When caught, Rudy was skin and bones with every kind of parasite both internal and external. He could barely stand and the vet thought he could not have survived out there more than another day. He was barely 6 pounds. After 2 weeks of TLC, Rudy weighed in at 9 pounds with all ticks, fleas, and worms gone! Rudy's personality has blossomed. He needs only about 10-15 minutes to warm up to new people. He likes both men and women. He is doing very well with his foster's dog and cat. He likes to chase the cat but in a playful, not mean, way. He has not been adequately kid-tested but does not like to be startled or poked so a home without small children would be best. While he can be playful and even dance for you, he is most content to snuggle up on a lap or next to you on the couch. He loves to be held. He is sweet, funny and very loveable! While he can have a bit of the Chi attitude, he is not yappy and only barks when someone comes to the door or he hears noises outside. Rudy is crate trained, pee pad trained, but still likes to go outside (when recent weather permits) for potty breaks. He walks very well on a leash. Rudy is a wonderful boy who has been through a lot a deserves a wonderful home of his own!

      Breed: Beagle
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Lewistown, PA
Posted Breed: Beagle (short coat). JR, now named Bubbs, needs our help. He spent 15 years in an outdoor kennel. When he was found he had a 1 lb tumor on his back side and a healed foot injury fro ... m being caught in a trap years before. Well...our donors gathered together and we got him all fixed up. He was fostered by a wonderful family, Ronda and Sam Markley. They have fosters in and out, as well as their own pups. JR loved his beagle foster. They were buds. ;) When asked what JR was like, Ronda said, "He is so laid back. If he has a comfy bed and some toys, (just watch the dishtowels) ! LOL... he should be fine. He loves it inside. LOL He does crack me up! LOL..He opens my cupboard door that I have a hand towel on. I didn't film him doing that though." Unfortunately, JR needs to find a new family. He is great with other dogs, very personable and friendly. He is 16 years old, has bladder control challenges. He cannot hold his bladder beyond five or six hours. The family works and are gone for 10 hours throughout the day. He will get into garbage if it's available. He needs the ability to get in and out or have a family that is " home often." The family feels it is unfair to all involved. If you can look passed an old boy that lived on a chain his entire 15 years...or someone who is home more during the day to give him consistency please apply

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Lotti and Lola were surrendered to a shelter when their elderly owner passed away. The shelter has very few volunteers. These girls lived behind the counter. Someone touched base with us and asked we could help get them into a home. We reached out to the shelter staff and they agreed!! These girls have been together for 13 years! They will need a committed owner who will give them love and attention. They are pretty easy keepers... they sleep alot. ;) But when they are awake... they LOVE to be held and snuggled. If interested in giving this bonded pair a forever family, please put in an application thru our website www.onedogatatime.us.
