Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). My name is Cole and I am over five years old. I came to the rescue after I waited at a humane trap for eighteen hours for someone to come back and get me. Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t in the trap I just laid beside it an waited and it was worth it! I was very thin and had some nasty things called heartworms when I got here. The vet treated me and I am all better. Then I found out I had thyroid cancer! They removed a mass and I am going through treatment, can you love me anyway? I have been vaccinated, neutered, microchipped and I gained ten pounds. I love everyone and don’t have a mean bone in my body. I will sit beside you and I want to do whatever you want me to, I love you already. Please don’t raise your voice to me because it scares me. I promise to be gentle with you if you can promise me the same. In June 2015 I graduated from the prison dog training program. I am housetrained, know basic obedience, how to walk on a leash and run an agility course plus I know a trick or two. My adoption fee is 150.00 so quick, fill out the adoption application for me, Cole.

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. UPDATE 11/21/16: I have graduated from a Prison dog training program. I am house, crate, obedience and agility course trained. I will know a few tricks too. Hi, hi, hi there. It's me Clyde. I am a chihuahua mix that is about a year old and I weight fourteen pounds. I was born at the rescue and returned a few months ago. My mom is Kady and she was adopted a while ago. When I was returned my leg was hurt and I had demodex mange. Now I am better and my hair has grown back. I will always walk uniquely. As a young boy I love to play and run around a fenced yard. I love other dogs and don't mind cats. I am happy. I know my pictures make me look so serious but I was posing for them. I like toys, kids and meal time. I admit I need some work on house training. I like to hang out with you and need to remember not to jump up to get your attention. I have speckled feet so I hope you like them. I have been neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. My adoption fee is 150.00. To adopt me you just need to fill out an application at www.dogsasfamily.org. I need a "forever family", not a just "until I don't want a dog anymore family". I hope that is you.

I will know a few tricks too. My name is Chewie. I am about eighteen months old and weigh a little over eight pounds. I came to the rescue when I became homeless. I was scared at first but I feel alot better now. I love to play with other kids about my size. My favorite is when we chase each other. I love the wind in my face speeding around inside the fenced yard. I was wrestling with my friend when they took my pictures so I am sorry I look wet. People are nice and supper is wonderful. Treats are super great. I am a little thin so the stable food was a comfort that most do not understand. I promise not to miss a meal. I haven't really had any potty accidents but maybe you could help me know where to go and how to tell you? I am neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. My adoption fee is 150.00. The first step in adopting me, Chewie, is to complete an application at www.dogsasfamily.org. I know red heads are thought to be fiesty and I will try to behave myself afterall a red head is a true gem too. Love you soon.

Posted Breed: Cairn Terrier / Mixed. Hey there, it's me Baby Ruth. I came to the rescue after my mom moved into an apartment and I couldn't stay with her. Ok, I will be honest I talked when people walked by my door. I am a terrier female and I thought I needed to tell her when someone was around. I am about six years old and I have been on a diet to lose weight. Yes, I love food a little too much. I am on a special food to help take some weight off right now but I won't have to stay on it forever. I am scared to meet new people. I will hide behind my Grandma. Are you a safe person?? If you give me a chance to warm up to you I can be a really good friend. I will admit I have spent my life with a woman and I prefer woman over men. I think small children are too loud and busy so it's best for me if you have older children or no children at all. I walk well on a leash with a harness and am house trained. I have been spay, vaccinated and microchipped. My adoption fee is 150.00. To start the process of adopting me, Baby Ruth, you just need to fill out the application at www.dogsasfamily.org. You and I could really be good for each other.

Posted Breed: Rottweiler. Hey, what’s up. It’s me Shelby. I am hanging out here at the rescue waiting for a new home. Sure, I lost my last one but I have no idea why. I am a female Rottweiler that is about seventy-five pounds. I could gain a few pounds if you don’t mind. I appear to be housetrained and crate trained. I have had litters of puppies but I am done with all that now. I have some skin tabs so I hope you can look past that. I like my people, kids and going for car rides. I have a very big loud bark to warn you of anything I am concerned about. I was found with another dog but honestly I prefer to be the bossy broad in the dog pack. I went to the vet and was spay, microchipped & vaccinated. My adoption fee is 200.00. I am ready to go home. If you think that is with you please go to www.dogsasfamily.org and fill out an adoption application for me, Shelby. Let’s hang out together.

Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Oh, hello. Please call me Blake. I came to the rescue a few years ago when I was found hit by a car by the capital with numerous broken bones. A nice person came along but I hurt so bad I wouldn’t let them touch me. They put out a crate so I dragged myself into it. After surgeries with screws and plates in my back legs my body has healed. I admit it took longer for me to heal emotionally. I have graduated from the prison dog training program. I am leash, crate and house trained. I know all my basic obedience. On a leash I will do whatever you ask. Off leash I love to play with other dogs in a fenced yard. You can pet me inside but I'd prefer not outside but maybe we could keep working on that? I love supper time and can hardly wait. I am not a bigger talker, actually I am pretty quiet. I would like a job...maybe I could lay by your feet and keep them warm or maybe just be company or a friend for your other dog. You decide where I would fit best. I am neutered, current on vaccinations, micro chipped and current on flea & tick preventative. I may need arthritis medicine later in life, I am not really sure. My adoption fee is 100.00 and you can fill out an adoption application for me, Blake, at dogsasfamily.com. I may not be perfect however I can still love you unconditionally. Can you love me?

I am now house trained, leash trained, crate trained, know all my basic obedience, be able to work on an agility course and can show you a few tricks too. My name is April and I came to the rescue after we were taken from a place called a hoarder. Seventeen of us furry kids were taken away that day but I had brand new babies with me. They didn't even have their eyes open yet so I had to protect them. Well they are all gone now and I have just been waiting for a home of my own. I am about three years old and weigh about seven pounds. I confess, I don't like children. I like other dogs but a fairly quiet home. I have been spay, vaccinated and microchipped.
