Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This little spit fire was happy to meet us! She was saved from a rural shelter literally at the 11th hour and is certainly grateful for her second chance! She enjoyed her walk, but could use some work on the leash. However, she is housebroken and crate trained, and super smart. This pretty girl needs to be an only dog, but don't let that deter you...she is certainly all the dog you'll ever need. Could you be the lucky one to share your life with this beauty? If you are interested in adopting Roxie, please fill out an application today!

More About American Pit Bull Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, VA
Posted Breed: Hound (short coat). Rosie had a rough time before she found her way to Ring Dog Rescue. She was adopted from a rural shelter where she got away from her adopter on the first day she was adopted and spent the next 9 months on the lam! She was finally caught and brought back to the shelter where an RDR volunteer could not bear to leave her there. Rosie has adjusted fabulously to living life on the inside! She loves the couch (can you tell?), her crate, and her foster family (human and canine). She is housebroken and a very quiet girl. She would do best in a calm quiet home that will allow her to bloom into her full potential without a specific timeline and a lot of expectations. In return she promises to love you unconditionally...a win win! If you are interested in Rosie, complete an application today!

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, VA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Bri is a special girl, petite, energetic, food and toy motivated, crate trained and housebroken. She sounds like the perfect package, but she did have a hard start to life, she is now in a much better place, but does take sometime to adjust. Brie would prefer a home that is active and wants to play ball, go on hikes and walks. Brie prefers a gentle and less stressful calm environment and is not a good match for young children. Brie does very well with the cats she has met and the two in her foster home. While Brie is doing great with dogs out on her Canine Adventure Walks, she prefers a home with either a smaller dog, or one that will not want to challenge her and likes to do their own thing. Brie is really a great girl and is looking for a great home. If you are interested in adopting Brie, please fill out an application today!

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier. Location: Rocky Mount, VA I’m Gavin, a really great guy and a pleasure to have around. I’m a moderately big fella, somewhere around 65lbs. I like to play and can play hard but I also like to chill out for hours at a time on the couch, preferably with my head in your lap. I’m mostly housetrained with only an occasional accident here and there. All of our animals have a lifetime commitment. If for any reason, the adoption does not work out, the cats and dogs are to come back to FCHS, which is a NO kill facility. The adoption fees help cover a portion of the care provided to the animals. Please visit our website under adoptable pets for a range of adoptions fees. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (dogs) and placed on preventative, microchipped, and more. You can find our adoption application at www.plannedpethoodrockymount.com/adoption.html. Applications or questions can be emailed to adoptions@plannedpethoodrockymount.com. Please email for faster response or come on by during our business hours. Please do not call, this may cause delay because we receive a high volume of calls each day and operate with a small staff. Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, VA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Boofus is a 3 year big boy lab X. He is about 75lbs. Boofus has had a really rough go at life until Ring Dog Rescue brought him in. Prior to rescue he has spent his entire life tied to a tree in a small pen. Once Boofus joined us he had to go through heartworm treatment. Boofus recently finished his treatment and his crate rest. So now Boofus is trying really hard to learn leash manners and basic obedience. He is slowly being introduced to his four legged house mates and is doing well playing with his female pit bull friend. He doesn't read doggie language very well so his friend Lana is helping out and showing him the way. Boofus still has a way to go to get him use to being a companion and learn how Awesome it can be to be a inside dog. Boofus will need a patient and active family. If you are interested in adopting Boofus, please fill out an application today!

      Location: Richmond, VA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier. Location: Gloucester, VA This is Missy. While she just loves people. I am afraid she wants all the attention herself and therefore, must be an only animal. She has been with us for about a year and a half, starting out at the municipal pound and then taking residence at the Gloucester Mathews Humane Society. She is about four and a half, is UTD on all shots and walks well on leash and is likely housetrained. She loves to play with tennis balls. She is a pretty blue and white smooth coated girl, and is about 50 pounds. While the folks at the humane society do whatever they can to make her happy and comfy, she is getting stressed at the facility, so I am expanding the contacts for help in finding her an appropriate rescue or adoptive home. She is healthy and smart and just needs an only animal home, preferably with adults only and a calm and experienced human guardian. I know that is a tall order but she is worth the trouble. Posted Breed: American Bulldog. Hi. My name is Louie. I was rescued after being severely neglected 2 years ago. I am so happy to be saved. Now, my temporary home is a boarding facility but it is not a real home. Here are a few things I like: playing ball, fetching, going on long walks or runs, pleasing people, meeting new people and treats. I have a lot of energy and enjoy being with people and greeting them with a supercharged tail wagging and happy dance. I love people and kids too. My rescue Dad says I am a sweet boy who wants nothing more than being part of a loving home where I should be the only dog and no cats please. I am approximately 3 years old, 58 lbs. and all vetting is up-to-date (vaccines, neutered, heartworm negative, etc.) I am house trained and crate trained.
