Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi! My name is Bodhi. I am about 2.5 years old. Last time I weighed myself, I was about 55 pounds. I am currently being fostered in a home with a toddler, and nine-year-old and two cats. There is also another dog…things went really well for a while but, we stopped getting along. We have some drama. My foster parents would love to keep me but, they don’t want us to argue around the kiddos. I totally get it. We are big guys. I would love to find a fur-ever home with someone who doesn’t have another dog. I do love kids though; I wouldn’t mind that at all. I can get used to cats if you introduce us properly. I am crate trained, house trained, neutered, micro-chipped and my shots are up-to-date. I sit and stay and go right to my bed, when asked. I LOVE to go for long walks. I use a gentle leader and sometimes wear a backpack. Jogging is my favorite. I move like a gazelle! I have a big back yard at my current home so, if you have one too, that would be awesome!! Oh, and I love to chase that red dot…I thinks it’s for the cats but, they don’t care about it. Things you should know. I get carsick. I usually get sick once and then I am fine after that. I try to hold it but it always happens when I’m about a block away from my destination. My foster mom just brings a towel in the car; she thinks it’s kind of funny. Disclaimer: This dog is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by the foster, not by Paws in the City. A $200 adoption fee is due at the time of adoption and will go to the foster. To meet this dog, please fill out an adoption application at the Paws in the City website http://pawsinthecity.org/adopt.htm.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. Rolo seizes each moment, whether the day's activities include playing tug of war with his friends, taking walks, or snuggling with his foster family. Of course, he also enjoys the finer things in life such as bones, soft toys, and treats of all kinds-he'll gladly try any treat at least once. He behaves politely during his leashed walks, listens to sit, comes when he is called, and sleeps in his own bed. He prefers to go in and out throughout the day and rests in his crate when he is alone. Occasionally the trashcan influences his curiosity, but his training continues to improve each day. While Rolo is playful and friendly around other dogs, he is a little shy and nervous around new people. With some patience, he'll love you, relax on your lap, and roll over for belly rubs. For adoption information or to complete an application, please go to: http://www.pawsinthecity.org/adopt.htm References and a home visit are required for all adoptions. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). It's no wonder I'm named Snickers, I mean just by the look of my chocolate, caramel, and vanilla coloring, I'm as sweet as can be! I know being a rescue mix might give me a bad rep, but I promise I don't fit the stereo-type of a small (I'm only 22 pounds!), "yappy" dog! I'm quite the opposite. In fact, I'm very quiet and just LOVE to snuggle. I'll fit perfectly into your lap or by your side, whatever you prefer! As long as I'm let outside for potty 3-4 times a day, I'm 100% potty trained! Not too bad for a little guy, hey? I'm also really smart, because I know how to sit, stay, lay, and most importantly - come! I get along with all people, kids, and other pets, but huge, excited dogs can make me a bit nervous! I soon warm up to them once they've calmed down. I sleep in my crate at night and when my foster mom is away, I happily sleep in my crate as well! Just give me an antler and I'm perfectly content. She tells everyone I'm affectionate, playful, cuddly, trainable, entertaining, and (my namesake) sweet! You wouldn't think such a big personality could fit into one small dog, but what can I say? I'm one of a kind. I'm currently going through heartworm treatment, but my foster mom has been so diligent getting me 100% healthy! I can't wait to meet you - especially if I smell any treats on you! Posted Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback / Mixed. My name is Zeb and as you can see I am much older than most of the kids on the website. Older age is seen a lot of times as a negative thing. I am not going to disagree on how old age is hard on the bones, but on a positive note older age means I understand a lot of the ins and outs of life! I am potty trained, crate trained, know to sit for my food, and how to walk on a leash. As you can see I love my naps, but I also enjoy sun bathing and short walks. I would prefer a quiet home without young kids or other dogs. My ideal job would be your gardening partner or your tv companion. I would bond best with someone with a low key lifestyle who is calm and willing to be patient with me. For more info email Amy@pawsinthecity.org. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Hi, my nmae is Mac. I am a good boy who loves people and other dogs. I have not found a dog or person that I don't absolutely love. I love everyone! You can take me anywhere and I'm so good. I would LOVE to go to the dog park and I won't meet a stranger. The boaring place I was at when foster momma had to go out of town called her and requested I come visit the best friend I made, another rescue dog who didn't have anyone to play with. Foster momma now takes me up there every week so we can play. After only being at my foster family's house for a week I didn't have to stay in the crate anymore at night because they trust me to sleep and be quiet and stay in the comfy chair until morning. I am a big time snuggler and will curl up with a human just to lay my head on their leg. But I'm always down to go for walks and adventures; if I could find a home where I got to go to patios, kid's sports games or even car rides I would be so happy! I just want to be with a family and show them how much I love them. I'm up for any adventure. I even had someone take me hiking and I lOVED that. I'm ready for a forever home; neutered, housetrained, up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped and full of love! For any questions please text or call 214-263-2100. I only want to kiss and cuddle, but I do like to play. I think my siblings are crazy when they tussle. I tend to sit and watch on the sidelines instead of joining in their crazy wrestling matches. But most of all, I love humans. My foster mom gives me massages on my feet and legs and I tend to fall asleep just being in her lap. I am not really verbal unless I have to go potty and I love to watch the humans clean and cook and just go everywhere with them. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chow Chow / Mixed. Hi! I'm Kermit the dog. Get it? Like Kermit the frog but a dog... Anyways, some info about me, I'm a large boy at 70 lbs and am in the prime of my life at just 5 years old. It's up for debate but I think I'm a mixed breed of Leonberger, Chow Chow, and Retreiver, but the short way to say it is, I'm a mutt. And that's just fine with me! I'm a handsome guy, so much so that people stop in their tracks to tell me what a good looking dog I am. But forget looks, I have a cool personality too! I am a happy-go-lucky guy who loves to be loved. I'm a total goofball as well so you'll get to laugh with me all day long! I love my people. I'm the perfect protector and will always be loyal to you. Speaking of things I love, one of my favorite things is to be pet. Endless petting would be my dream come true. Belly rubs are the best though! I have a soft and shiny brown coat so you won't mind petting me one bit. If it's time to watch TV, I can happily settle down on my dog bed and relax with you. But when that's over, I'd like to play in the backyard. I can do a lap around the backyard in record time because I have such a large stride. Squirrels beware :) A few laps later and I've had my workout for the day (approx 20 mins is ideal). Being such a big guy, it doesn't take much to wear me out but it's important for me to be active daily. I'm good on walks as well as riding in a car. Oh and I'm a perfect gentleman at the vet/bathing/groomer. I'm a lucky guy. I know that for a few reasons; First I was rescued by Paws In The City. Then they diagnosed me as being Heartworm positive and got me the treatment I needed to get well again. Next, they invested in me and got me the training I needed to get me on track to being my best self. I have some of my best years left to live. I've been given another chance at life so now I am looking for the right person/people to be my forever. My perfect person/people would live in a house with a big fenced-in backyard. They would be active and would want to spend lots of time with me. They wouldn't have a kitty cat as I think they are fun to chase (sorry, not sorry). They wouldn't have young kiddos since I'm such a big goofy guy, I'd very likely knock them over by accident--I'm a klutz what can I say?! Also, I'd really like another doggie sibling although I tend to be a bit picky. I mean who really likes everybody, right?? I think being selective is a good thing... I can't really narrow it down to a type of dog I like or don't like so much as I like to be the alpha. I'm a bit stubborn, it's the nature of my breeds. But boy am I lovable and sweet. My forever home would be patient with me and would continue to work with me on my training. We could have the best time together for forever! I'd love to meet you! Please call 214-263-2100 if you are interested in more information. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). zzMama was found on the streets. We called her zzMama, it was obvious had babies at a young age. We don't know what happened to her babies. zzMama is the "most" loving, easy-going, extremely smart (learned how to sit, shake and down in a few minutes), she loves to please, she loves children, any size dog (unless the other dog is aggressive she will protect "her" pack), extremely loyal, low-energy and loves to socialize!!! She is the most popular dog in our neighborhood. Everyone know her by name and sits by the gateway (we live on a beltway with a river, walkway with and open fence) waiting for her friends to come by everyday. Children, puts their hands through the fence to pet her, dogs come by to play...etc. and they all know her by her name. She is healthy about 2 years old, she is potty trained (unless you don't let her out), great with strangers, but will bark at any lawn equipment. zzMama needs an outdoor space to be happy, loves to be social with people and dogs, dry food with canned mixed is her fav (we spoiled her a bit). GREAT family dog with CHILDREN! She is a social dog, so, being isolated alone for 8 hours will not be good for her. She is loving and if you get her you will be the luckiest family!!!! (Don't all sisters?) zzRuby has a beautiful coat, a very playful and loving disposition, understands basic commands, and is great on a leash. Ruby is also spayed and microchipped. After being left behind when her family moved we promised to find her a loving and permanent home.
