Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Handsome Rusty (Watch my new video!) was rescued from a crowded shelter (Alameda). He was the shelter favorite! Rusty gets along with other dogs and loves to play with them. He is great with his current foster home with other dogs and male/female guardians. He loves his walks. He needs routine and quiet stable home. He has a solid good nature personality when comforable but is fearful/shy of loud noise and new changes/people. He will need exercise long walks and someone who will provide him love quiet routine and guidance for life. Adult home only. He is scared of kids. Update from foster home: They say diamonds are a girl's best friend but we think RUSTY might be better! He is a sweet smart fellow who is looking for a special lady to love him. He likes long walks on the beach car rides and good belly rub. He is very shy and hates crowded places but once you gain his trust you will have it for life. Rusty is moderately active guy who loves to play is always up for a game of ball or fetch and would make a great hiking or running partner. Gets along with foster home's cats. If you think you might have room in your heart and your home for Rusty please don't hesitate to meet him.YouTube: http://youtu.be/u-G4IqVryi8

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Fremont, CA
Posted Breed: Poodle (Standard) / Mixed. Cagney (watch my video!) and her sister Lacey were rescued from an Alameda County shelter. Cagney is the big sister and more outgoing;protective than Lacey. She was scared at the shelter but once out of her cage she was friendly with us. No cats please. Cagney was neglected severely matted dirty and under-socialized. She looks very cute now that she is healthier and groomed! She is fearful & of strangers and may guard person to men (maybe due to abuse from before). She may nip if she is fearful. She is an amazing indoor dog. She is happy to relax at the foot of the sofa and watch what goes on outside for most of the day. She loves her walks (45 min). She needs to be on the lead when new men come over because she will try to guard me. But after 10 minutes or so she starts to wag her tail and seek attention from the new people but with caution. She is great with women but very leary of men. She is dominate to small dogs and need proper introductions. Seems relaxed to meet larger dogs but will try to dominate. When left alone she will bark for a few minutes but then relaxes. She is crate trained and listens to person she bonds to. She loves her daily walks. She is best with women and quiet experienced adult home (less visitors) only. No kids please. Needs continued training & kind but confident and leader.YouTube: http://youtu.be/oV6Na52XhuE

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Fremont, CA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Frankie came into FFR on 6/8/11 for our help to find her a new adoption home. Frankie is a very special dog. She comes from an abusive past and has flourished despite her past treatment. She is very curious yet cautious of new experiences. She does have high prey drive to other dogs and needs to be on leash at all times for control outside of her home. She has learned to play with toys and sleep in her crate. She is very smart and tries to avoid when she knows it’s time to do something she doesn’t want to do so we are working on her obedience manners. Frankie hasn’t had a lot of attention in her short life so she is very reluctant to let you stop petting her. With supervision she ignored the foster home's cat & fine with same size male dog. Frankie needs a very experienced pack leader guardian to train her. Adult home. No kids. **If you can't give her a home but can donate to help with her boarding care and training we greatly appreciate it. Please be sure to note that your donation is for Frankie. Update: Frankie is doing great at her trainer/boarding home. She went out for a social walk at a park and streets and she was great meeting new people. She did ignored other barking dogs but did bark at dogs at a store. She needs a forever very experienced home. Best as the only dog to continue her training. We are paying for her boarding with a trainer/boarding home.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Australian Kelpie / Mixed. Morgan (Watch my video!) was adopted from when she was a puppy in Dec. 2009 but now she needs a new home due to her guardian new life long work hours and changes. She is beautiful and very smart. Morgan prefers people over other dogs. Very friendly and happy to meet new people. She needs someone around more (anxious if left home alone) and continue with leadership training. Morgan will sit and down for treats. Good on leash but needs guidance when sees other new dogs since she may react and bark but will listen to corrections and training. No cats will want to chase. With proper introductions she is ok around other dogs she knows and currently lives in a home with another dog but they don't play. She needs daily exercise and perhaps will benefit from a fun sport dog training since she is athletic. Morgan can jump a fence so needs to be supervised while in yard. However she only jumps the fence to follow her guardian. Morgan does play ball but currently does not return the ball. She needs a person to train her to drop ball and play fetch. Looking for an experienced adult home.YouTube: http://youtu.be/mF5tanMlGWU

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Spaniel / Mixed. Nellie was originally rescued from a shelter where she was fearful in her cage. Nellie was adopted in 2009 and returned due to her barking at visitors at her home. She had Nellie on mood altering drugs (from vet) for anxiety which did not work. After many months in our wonderful foster home Nellie no longer needs them. Holistic and fresh foods along with daily exercise and training has help her detox to be happy and calm. 11/15/15 UPDATE FROM FOSTER HOME: Nellie is a sweet friendly affectionate little girl. She loves to sit on my lap belly rubs and will do anything for a snack... food motivated! Nellie gets along well and is respectful to my three dogs though at this time she is more interested in me than playing with my dogs. Nellie loves to go on her daily 30-45 minute walks and zoom around in the yard with other dogs. Nellie currently sleeps in the family room un-crated without issue. She will make someone very happy! Due to her small size and sensitive nature children 12 and older.

Posted Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed. Nitro was rescued from a crowded shelter with little time left. Our first impression of him was that he was a high energy dog and would need special handling but that soon changed. After his initial excitement at being rescued from the shelter we saw that he was ready to follow the lead of his human handlers and be a well behaved dog. Nitro is smart! Update January 2016: Nitro has been doing great at our trainer/boarding home. They report that he is very eager to learn and is a fast learner. He loves playing tug-o-toy and fetching balls. He is treat motivated very athletic strong and smart. Update September 2016: Nitro's current foster home reports that Nitro is a very well behaved and gentle dog. He is house trained and very well behaved. He is very good on a walks or jogs and is eager to go when his foster picks up his leash. Nitro is good when meeting other dogs but sometimes needs a quick reminder to calm if he gets too excited. He sleeps all night and will be calm during the day but he's always ready to play ball or go for a brisk walk. He tolerates a bath well loves to be groomed performs simple tasks for a treat and doesn't guard his food. He loves to chew on his toys and chews. He is fine being left home alone for about four hours with a safe chew (bully stick). Nitro will alert bark only when he senses a threat such as strange noises outside or a knock on the door. Noise from cars trucks lawnmowers fireworks and vacuum cleaners do not bother him but he enjoys howling when sirens pass by. Nitro has not had much exposure to children but has done well with those that he has met. Due to his strength and size kids 10 years and up with dog experience. Nitro needs a experienced guardian (a plus with this his breed type) who will give him plenty of daily exercise and fun activity (fetch training fun dog sport). Nitro wants to be your loyal best friend and forever family member. He is a super great dog and we all love him!

      Location: Fremont, CA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed. Liam was rescued from a crowded shelter where he was nervous. Once out he warms up and is gentle & friendly. Poor Liam suffered for years in pain with no proper vet care and badly neglected (left outside skinny badly matted) before he was dumped at a city shelter. Liam had severe dental decay with infections which required major severe dental surgery with x-rays biopsy and 14 infected/rotten decayed teeth extracts. The infections was so bad it caused a hole from his gum to the roof of his mouth to his nasal cavity (causing food & water to travel to his nasal area so he cannot eat properly). The hole required additional repair surgery. Huge thanks to his great foster home for all their TLC and driving him back/forth to the vet for all his vet needs. Update 9/10/15: Liam is doing great and very happy sweet & friendly. The two holes on the roof his mouth to his nasal cavity has not healed since his major dental surgery. FFR has taken care of all his needs which is very costly. Vet bills are over $2000. Donations greatly needed & appreciated to help Liam! 10/28/15: He saw the Dog Oral Specialist. $1200 xray & biopsy. Awaiting biopsy. No bone in room diseased roof tissue. Repair might not be possible. Awaiting test results. Donations needed to help cover his $3200 vet bills so far. 1/25/16 update:Unfortunately all of Liam's tests cultures and his biopsy came back negative (meaning no info) from two local specialists and the UC Davis specialists. One specialist suggested that is is perhaps an auto-immune illness (though blood test does not show anything) for the holes on the roof of his mouth (caused by his horrible neglected mouth/teeth infections when he was dumped). So now Liam is on steroids help him. Donations to help us with Liam's vet expenses are greatly needed and appreciated. His vet bills are now over $9000. Update from his Foster Home: Liam is doing very well with the steroid treatment. The holes in his mouth have stabilized and do not seem to be getting bigger. He now only needs to see the vet and get a blood test once a year. He is able to eat regular kibble and Primal raw food nuggets. Liam takes his steroid pills every other day with his food with no problems. Because of the holes in his mouth he prefers to drink water from a bottle (water bottles that small pets like rabbits drink from) than from a water bowl. He is a happy and sweet dog that loves his walks car rides and cuddling. Liam needs a experienced adult home. Miracle Club: https://www.furryfriendsrescue.org/about_us/miracle_club

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Giggles (watch my video & another video!) was rescued on 4/17/16. She was very scared at the shelter running and darting to avoid being leashed. When brought out of her kennel for evaluation she remained very timid trying to hide. Now that Giggles is in her foster home she is finally relaxing. She does well with other dogs big and small. She particularly loves toys especially balls. She likes to cuddle and give kisses. She is very timid of new people but learning to trust. While Giggles loves to play she also enjoys relaxing at home and cuddling in a bed or with her people. She needs basic training. More information to come as the foster home learns more. FOSTER HOME UPDATEGiggles is doing well and slowly learning to trust. She is fearful and unsure of new surroundings and people particularly of men. She is in a foster home that is working with her to help build her confidence. She has gained a lot of confidence on leash passing people and other dogs. She particularly loves her walks. The one activity she especially loves is playtime as you can see in her video. Playing and being silly are her favorite activities. She also loves to cuddle and curl up in a comfy dog bed. Giggles would do great in a home with another dog that needs a playmate or on her own in an active home where she can be the center of attention.YouTube: https://youtu.be/lnPUDEWXQ74

      Sex: Male Male

Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Mixed. Sherlock was rescued from a crowded shelter. He is smart curious confident and gorgeous. Super people friendly alert snuggly and loves attention but he needs a leader to guide him. He can get anxious and nervous (Llasa personality). He is good with other small dogs with proper introductions on leash but he wants to be the top dog (alpha) at home especially with other male dogs. He did well with other dogs during our testing and on walks. Loves walks & socializing. He needs adult very experienced guardian only. Sherlock is sensitive and needs the guardian to be his leader with confidence (he will sense anxious/nervous person) and tell him what to do vs coddling (he will get confused). Guardian must be confident and guide him. He was leary and fearful of young kids (will nip). At home he likes to follow person around but does not like his face petted and may nip if stressed. Sherlock needs access to yard or walk for mid-day potty break. He needs daily exercise and someone home more or someone that can consistently give him a mid-day break. With our volunteers he is friendly walks well on leash and listens. Will snuggle in our laps (both women & men) when he trusts the person. Sherlock wants to bond to confident person who will guide him and he will listen. Smart. At his foster home we learned that Sherlock is very allergic to Dust Mites (in carpet). After many vet visits and holistic vets he is now on raw diet only and herbs for his allergy. So he needs a home with no carpet to avoid dust mites. He needs experienced quiet adult home and NO KIDS.
