Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Turtle is ready to give up her career as a back yard junk dog! It's time to start something new, and HOPE Rescue in Houston is ready to help her. Turtle has many skills that will make her new career as an adopted pooch a breeze! For example, she has plenty of playgroup experience, and she excels at zooming around the yard. However, she also enjoys just sitting in the yard bird watching or watching the squirrels playing in the trees. She also has wonderful people skills. Turtle's specialties are snuggling, smiling and making human hearts grow three sizes. Turtle's favorite past time is just lying on the couch with her human & watching TV. Can you help Turtle start her new career as an adopted member of your loving family? If you are interested in Turtle and would like to fill out a Dog Adoption Application, please go to: http://www.homelesspets.net/adoption-forms/dog-adoption.php . Submitting an application does not obligate you to adopt from us but it initiates contact with us and gets the process started. If you have questions prior to filling out the application, email us at hope@homelesspets.net and a volunteer will get back to you.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

She was found on the side of the road with her friend Molly and 8 pups. It just took a little TLC for this girl to fit right in to her new home. She is potty trained and crate trained. CeCe loves to be held and and give kisses. She would make a great addition to any home. Shakespeare ...

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: HOUSTON, TX
Posted Breed: Miniature Schnauzer / Chinese Crested-Powder Puff / Mixed (short coat). Meet Shakespeare! He is 4 years old and weighs 18 lbs. Shakespeare recently came from a home where he was one of too many pups and was always in the background never getting the love and attention he needed. Because of that we feel there is much more to his sweet personality than what we have learned in the short time he has been in foster care. So far we know that Shakespeare loves to go on walks and ride in the car. He can be very cautious about anything new so Shakespeare will need a quiet home without young children. He is a dog that loves to wear his coat and hat and really looks good in every dog coat and sweater you put on him. He seems to take pride and some type of security from wearing his trendy outfits. At his foster home he is fine with their cats and while he has always been around other dogs he would be okay as only dog or a home with a cat that likes dogs. If there was another dog in the home it would have to be a good match with Shakespeare’s quiet personality. This sweet pup has won over the hearts of dog and cat lovers alike. We are accepting applications at this time to find the person who would like to give Shakespeare his new forever home and provide him the love and guidance his deserves. If you are interested in Shakespeare and would like to fill out a Dog Adoption Application, please go to: http://www.homelesspets.net/adoption-forms/dog-adoption.php . Aerial loves to cuddle and play with kids and other dogs and she especially loves to play in the water. She goes to the dog park and splashes at the edge of the pond and loves to get squirted with the hose at home. This girl is a typical adolescent puppy - sweet, smart, energetic and very loving. She has been well socialized at her foster home and would make a great addition to a family looking for a big puppy to grow up with the kids. Aerial is house trained, walks OK on leash and is crate trained. She was born in Feb 2016 and weighs about 45 lbs. Margot is about 1 year old and weighs 35 lbs. She is crate trained, housebroken and walks well on a leash. Margot will need a very lively family that enjoys doing fitness activities with her so that she has a healthy outlet for her energy. Breed: Doberman Pinscher-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: HOUSTON, TX
Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Doberman Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Dante is a Cattle Dog cross and weighs about 40 lbs . He is a dog that is very loyal and protective of his owner. Dante is bilingual and understands commands in Spanish and English. Dante would do the best with someone who has experience with the cattle dog breed and might not be the right dog for a first time dog owner or someone who does not do many outdoor activities. He is highly intelligent and learns very quickly. While at the vet getting his checkup, Dante rummaged through his foster moms purse, pulled out the car keys and went to the front door and set them down. He loves riding in the front seat in the car going for a ride anywhere his foster parents invite him along. He is an excellent work out partner and enjoys going jogging and running alongside his foster Mom as she rides her bike. He is not a dog that likes being confined to a crate but his foster home has found he can be trusted alone at home. If a dog could be considered a genius then Dante would be that dog. He would excel at Agility or might be a good candidate for a service dog as he learns so quickly and is extremely focused on his work. Approx. DOB: Jan. 2013. Approx. Weight: 40 lbs. If you are interested in Dante and would like to fill out a Dog Adoption Application, please go to: http://www.homelesspets.net/adoption-forms/dog-adoption.php . Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Mixed (medium coat). I am a gorgeous, friendly, energetic and unique fella. For a while, I was a solitary kind of guy with no family, just checking things out on my own and taking it easy. Then one night I had a run in with a UPS truck. He won and that’s how I became unique: I am now a tri-pod. My foster mom took me in, got me all fixed up, I learned to get by with just three legs and I am doing awesome! I LOVE to run, play and enjoy my new life completely. The only thing that would make it better would be to have a forever home of my own, hopefully with a canine sibling or two that I can play with; no cats please. I currently live with two older brothers but they don’t play very much and I get bored. I love to cuddle up next to my person on the couch, I’ll take all the tummy rubs I can get, and I even give kisses. I am crate trained and trained for a doggy door, walk on leash, but pull a bit. I love to chew on bones, toys, and I will chase a ball, but might not bring it back. I would love to be your awesome tri-pod ‘cause we don’t need no stinkin’ 4 legs !!!! Approx. DOB: Jan. 2014. So I sat down to write this post for the nice people at HOPE, because apparently that's the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable furbabies. I shudder to type this, but I'M LAPLESS! That's right, I have no lap to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours? I can't wait to see my forever home!
