Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Turtle is ready to give up her career as a back yard junk dog! It's time to start something new, and HOPE Rescue in Houston is ready to help her. Turtle has many skills that will make her new career as an adopted pooch a breeze! For example, she has plenty of playgroup experience, and she excels at zooming around the yard. However, she also enjoys just sitting in the yard bird watching or watching the squirrels playing in the trees. She also has wonderful people skills. Turtle's specialties are snuggling, smiling and making human hearts grow three sizes. Turtle's favorite past time is just lying on the couch with her human & watching TV. Can you help Turtle start her new career as an adopted member of your loving family? If you are interested in Turtle and would like to fill out a Dog Adoption Application, please go to: http://www.homelesspets.net/adoption-forms/dog-adoption.php . Submitting an application does not obligate you to adopt from us but it initiates contact with us and gets the process started. If you have questions prior to filling out the application, email us at hope@homelesspets.net and a volunteer will get back to you.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Female Female

Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever (medium coat). Aerial was dumped (with her sister) at the meat market not far from her foster mom's home. Aerial loves to cuddle and play with kids and other dogs and she especially loves to play in the water. She goes to the dog park and splashes at the edge of the pond and loves to get squirted with the hose at home. This girl is a typical adolescent dog - sweet, smart, energetic and very loving. She has been well socialized at her foster home and would make a great addition to a family looking for a big pup to grow up with the kids. Aerial would do best in a home with a canine companion. Aerial is house trained, walks OK on leash and is crate trained. She was born in Dec. 2015 and weighs about 50 lbs. Location: HOUSTON, TX
Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Mixed (medium coat). I am a gorgeous, friendly, energetic and unique fella. For a while, I was a solitary kind of guy with no family, just checking things out on my own and taking it easy. Then one night I had a run in with a UPS truck. He won and that’s how I became unique: I am now a tri-pod. My foster mom took me in, got me all fixed up, I learned to get by with just three legs and I am doing awesome! I LOVE to run, play and enjoy my new life completely. The only thing that would make it better would be to have a forever home of my own, hopefully with a canine sibling or two that I can play with; no cats please. I currently live with two older brothers but they don’t play very much and I get bored. I love to cuddle up next to my person on the couch, I’ll take all the tummy rubs I can get, and I even give kisses. I am crate trained and trained for a doggy door, walk on leash, but pull a bit. I love to chew on bones, toys, and I will chase a ball, but might not bring it back. I would love to be your awesome tri-pod ‘cause we don’t need no stinkin’ 4 legs !!!! Approx. DOB: Jan. 2014. Approx. Weight: 35 lbs. If you are interested in Buddy and would like to fill out a Dog Adoption Application, please go to: http://www.homelesspets.net/adoption-forms/dog-adoption.php . So I sat down to write this post for the nice people at HOPE, because apparently that's the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable furbabies. I shudder to type this, but I'M LAPLESS! That's right, I have no lap to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours? I can't wait to see my forever home!
