Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I’m BeeGee and I’ve been working hard to learn how to be a pet and I’m so smart I’ve almost got it all down! I’m always happy and love playing with people and attention but I get overwhelmed sometimes and like to spend some time in my crate until I’m feeling good again. I love to go for walks but am not excited about running. I’m more of a ‘stop and smell all the blades of grass’ type of girl! I’m completely house trained and kennel trained and am learning obedience commands. There’s a lot to learn in this new world! I’m a very curious girl and like to observe the noises of the world and locate the source of the sounds I hear. I don’t have much experience around other dogs so I’m a bit nervous but I do like to play if you give me some reinforcement and don’t rush me. You can see my progress, my videos and all of the fun I have by visiting my Facebook page: BeeGee Steps it Up I was rescued during the second largest dog fighting ring bust in US history. A total of 367 dogs were rescued in a 7 state operation after a three year investigation by the FBI, HSUS and ASPCA. I’m one of the lucky ones and never had to fight but, before last August, the only thing I knew was an 8 foot circle of dirt and a heavy chain around my neck. I was released in February and my foster mom from MABBR came and picked me up! I’ve been working hard to learn how to be a pet and I’m so smart I’ve almost got it all down! I’m always happy and love playing with people and attention but I get overwhelmed sometimes and like to spend some time in my crate until I’m feeling good again. I love to go for walks but am not excited about running. I’m more of a ‘stop and smell all the blades of grass’ type of girl! I need someone who is able to help me learn more about the world and will be patient when I ask you over and over ‘what’s that?’. I love when you tell me that I’ve done something right or I figured it out…nothing beats the feeling I get when I see that I’ve made you happy! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Harper

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Harper got her wings from the angels above. A delightful girl with a dance in her step, a quiet demeanor and a yearning for a family to call her own. She gets quite the raves from the folks at the boarding facility. She’s always up for a leisurely stroll or a car ride to a new adventure. She minds her p’s and q’s and never misses an opportunity for a snuggle. Little dogs are not her favorite and she does best with older kids.

      Zachariah

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We think Zach is around 3 years old. He’s a playful, sweet and generous guy who is quick to share his love with anyone and everyone. He’s an agreeable boy who is very settled in a home environment. No housebreaking necessary, already crate trained and knows a few tricks of his own. So far Zach hasn’t met a dog he didn’t like but has come into contact with a few who didn’t like him but he didn’t let that deter him from being his happy, confident self. Zach is a dog you have to meet in person. He’s a low rider with coloring that reminds us of autumn leaves. His raccoon tail is unique and he uses his permanent boo boo face to his fullest advantage. Always up for a car ride and a new adventure.

      Bruce

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Bruce is a dog who is impossible to meet without falling in love! He is a big-headed, big-hearted, sweet and loyal guy. Bruce was abandoned in a city park and spent several months fending for himself. He was frightened, lonely and in bad shape, but has since soaked up every bit of love like a sponge. He loves people with every fiber of his being and wants to lay his big soft head on your lap. He loves to go for walks, play in the yard and hang out with the other three dogs that live in his foster home. His very best animal friend is a Chihuahua, with whom he enjoys sleeping and licking, but he also loves to play tug of war with the big male dog that he lives with. He loves to play with people too, and squeaky toys are a special passion. He is perfectly potty-trained and doesn’t chew anything that isn’t his. Bruce needs a home with people who want to spend a lot of time with him. His sun rises and sets in his human companions. He has lots of energy and needs daily exercise to burn it off. Bruce loves the kiddos but cats are a no-go for him.

      Maggie

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Maggie was abandoned in her own backyard. Her owner went to jail leaving no one to care for her. Luckily, concerned neighbors stepped in and a fellow rescuer who lived nearby went to meet Maggie. She took her home for a day and watched her interact with her dogs and cats. She was open to her new doggy friends and curious and gentle with the cats. These two things alone can open so many doors for a rescue dog so we agreed to take her into our program. After a trip to the vet, we were told she had heartworms which means she had been living outside for the majority of her life. Despite this, Maggie is a loving and snuggly girl living with two other female dogs and the resident cat. She's not a very big girl so if petite and cuddly is your thing, Maggie is the perfect girl for you!!!

      Harlem

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). We are welcoming Harlem (originally known as Gypsy) back to MABBR. She was originally adopted out in 2011 when she was 12 weeks old. Due to a divorce in the family, they were no longer able to keep her. Mellie, a former MABBR alumni and Harlem’s mom, have been reunited after 4 years. This is what we know about Harlem so far: She is beautiful! Incredibly sweet. Loves car rides. She is outstanding on her leash. She does not pull at all and even looks back at you while she is walking – we love that. Harlem received a lot of attention while we were walking and greeted everyone, including small children, very well. Harlem lived with six children, the youngest being two years old. Harlem’s former family says she does well with the kids and that they trusted her with them and don’t worry about her being snippy or corrective. We will update as we get to know our girl again.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Louise (along with 8 other babies) was born on May 25, 2014. MABBR was asked to take 6 of these little darlings by a fellow rescuer, and once we saw their pictures and heard their story, it was hard to say no. Louise has really blossomed into a fun and spunky young pup. She loves going for walks, playing with her foster siblings, and napping on the couch. Louise is food motivated and a quick learner. She already has several basic obedience commands under her belt! Louise is kid-friendly, housebroken, crate-trained, fully vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped.
