Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Beautiful Queenie (Rosie) was rescued from Downey Animal Shelter after giving birth to 12 puppies! Queenie was emaciated and very ill with pneumonia upon rescue, and trying to feed so many pups really took a toll on her. We almost lost her. With the help of her devoted foster mom, Queenie recovered. She then survived Pyometra once pups were fully weaned and had to recover all over again. Once she recovered from Pyometra (her spay surgery took care of it), Queenie underwent 9 weeks of intensive behavior modification training with Yasin Ali of Empire K9 Training. She excels at basic commands, and eventually did well with pack training. Please see her video with her trainer. She is wonderful with humans and children, but she cannot go to a home with children under 12 for precautionary reasons. She was unsure about other dogs because no one ever socialized her. She was most likely bred several times and maybe dumped pregnant because she was so sick. We'll never know, but her future looks bright thanks to her foster and her trainer. Her trainer says she is an excellent, excellent dog who now shows confidence around other dogs but like any large dog, she will always have to be introduced properly. She will never be a dog park dog, and we do not recommend a home with cats. Queenie needs an experienced Pitbull/Bully lover who understands the breed and will commit to working with her so she can fully blossom into the wonderful dog she is and live the life she deserves to live. Our dream is to find someone who connects to Queenie's story and sees the win-win in owning a rescued dog that has overcome huge obstacles. Dogs who have survived trauma and neglect are often wonderful therapy for people who have survived health, emotional, and other trauma and obstacles themselves. We often say rescued dogs help us much more than we help them. Please email CAUSE4SBPAWS@GMAIL.COM or text (no calls please) 909-838-2243 for more information on our special survivor, Queenie.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Pearl

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Whippet Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Whippet / Mixed. With Pearl's small stature, sleek frame, long legs and tail, and perky ears, people often ask if she's mixed with Whippet or Greyhound. We're not sure, but we do know she is striking, unique looking, and so very sweet. Pearl was rescued anemic and so malnourished from Downey Shelter in June 2014, our vets could not agree on her age. One vet said 4-6 months old. Another said at least a year to two years, but growth stunted from being so neglected. Over two years later she is a sleek, healthy, happy girl. She was saved due to someone who offered to foster her. They fell in love and adopted her. Now, two years later, the family's life has changed. Pearl was feeling the strain so they reached out to us for help. So Baby Pearl is now a Cause Kid. She is sweet, quiet, very affectionate and loves kids. She prefers a home with no other dogs, but she is happy to share her space with cats. Email cause4sbpaws@gmail.com for more info on sweet Pearl, or fill out an adoption app now.

      Breed: Chipin
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). My name is Cleo, and I was rescued from Devore Animal Shelter in February of 2013 so pregnant I was ready to pop! I had 5 beautiful babies a few days later in the peace of a loving foster home. I was such a loving, doting mommy. Here I am, three years later still in rescue, no home to call my own. I am a loving, loyal little girl who loves to tell you like it is. I am a strong-willed, outspoken little lady - a true chihuahua with a little bit of Minpin mixed in. I love to play with my foster brothers & sisters, I love my 13 yr-old human kiddo who was 10 when I met her. I have the best bat radar ears you've ever seen. I will tilt my head at you lovingly when you talk to me, and curl up on your neck. I take a little while to trust & warm up to people, but once you're mine, I love you unconditionally. Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Puppy Mya, formerly Rose from San Bernardino City Shelter #A505775, is just such a happy girl. She is oh so excited to meet everyone, big or small, human or furry. She is wonderful with all dogs she meets, cats unknown, and very energetic! She needs an active family with other energetic dogs to get her puppy energy out, because she loves to play, run, and with some training, hike& jog with her future family. Her foster mommies are working on her leash skills - she was never walked by her former owners - but she has quickly learned sit, stay, down, and more! She's approximately 10 mos old and just a happy wigglebutt. She can't wait to wiggle her way into your life. Benito

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Miniature Pinscher
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua (short coat). Benito was relinquished to Cause for SB Paws when his previous owner didn't have time for him. He is a young, energetic, blue and tan min pin mix (possibly miniature Manchester terrier mix). The vet has aged him to be 14-16 weeks old as of 3/25, weighing just over 8 lbs. He is being fostered with cats, dogs (big and small) and is doing very well. He can be a bit rambunctious with the senior chihuahuas, so best in a home with dogs that can keep up with his energy level or with dogs who can tolerate a puppy. Benito was very unsocialized with humans at first and can still be shy, timid and cautious, but when he decides he likes you, he LOVES you. He is kennel trained, we're working on the doggy door, loves to cuddle, enjoys nylabones and kongs. Email cause4sbpaws@gmail.com for adoption info! Jester

      rescue
      Breed: Bullypit
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Jester is a survivor in so many ways. First, he survived high-kill Devore Animal Shelter, where he was euth listed due to several large tumors on his chest. Royce of Angels n Paws Rescue saved him and had his tumors removed, but they grew back. Using alternative treatments, he was eventually declared cancer free. Then the Blue Cut Fire nearly devastated the Angels n Paws Rescue Ranch in Devore, and Jester and all other animals had to be evacuated. We asked Royce if we could help this hand-shaking charmer while she got the ranch up and running again, and while with us, he was just diagnosed with skin cancer on his lower belly. The good news - it was an early diagnosis and five lesions were already removed. But odds are they will return. Our big boy also has arthritis in both knees, so he's on anti-inflammatories & pain relief. Jester just asks for a warm couch, cuddles and belly rubs. He wants nothing more than to please you and shake your hand. He is a big lovebug of a lug. Email cause4sbpaws@gmail.com to learn more about this Angels n Paws and Cause for SB Paws cutie.

      Chanel

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Chanel was found in the streets of San Bernardino by a Good samaritan. After 3 days they were not able to keep Chanel. Once her new foster mommy picked her up she was told that Chanel would not drink water and has trouble eating. Her mouth was infected and teeth rotten. The next day she was taken to the vet and had 11 teeth pulled and was on a 3 week course of antibiotics for her infection. She also had her ears flushed from being impacted with dirt and wax. Her stray hold is now up and no one came for little Chanel. She has gained almost a full lb since she was found. She loves to eat, play and most of all snuggle. She does has some allergy issues and takes meds daily at this time. She is an adorable little 9 year old looking for a loving and forever home. It would be best for her to be in a home with no small children due to her tiny size. Chanel gets along with all of her foster siblings and does love to be held or on your lap. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). ***COURTESY POST FOR CURRENT OWNER WHO NEEDS TO REHOME DUKE*** Duke or "Duke Boy" as I like to call him is a 3 year old Blue Brindle Pit Bull/Lab mix. He is a very energetic and a happy go lucky puppy at heart. Duke has so much spunk and so much to offer man's best friend. As playful as Duke can be, he can also be protective but not in an aggressive manner. He hears noise and he starts to bark so he does what dogs do. Duke is loyal and knows some commands, like sit, stay and back. He will listen to sit back and wait for you to let him out when it's time to go out. He also waits to be told to eat as opposed to simply going for the food when placed down. Duke is potty trained and crate trained. Duke needs an active owner that will allow him to be a great dog and a better best friend. Best with other large dogs or as an only dog. No cats. Email CAUSE4SBPAWS@GMAIL.COM to get in touch with current owner!
