Posted Breed: Hound / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Reese was due to be put down within hours of being pulled from a shelter in NC in April 2012. She was heartworm positive and very sick. She is completely healthy now and microchipped, spayed, and up-to-date on vaccinations. She is around 5 years old and about 40 lbs. She is dog reactive and would benefit from training to help her overcome her fear of other dogs. She has not been around cats, so we're not sure how she would act. Reese has been around children ages 2-17 years and does fine with them. However, we probably would not recommend a home with small children because she does have a lot of energy. She tends to jump up on people, which we are working on. She is crate and house trained. Reese needs to go a home with a family who is active because she loves to run with her foster mom. She does well on a leash. She loves to play, but also loves to cuddle. Reese is a survivor and looking for her forever family. If you are that special, active family, please call Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound Mix Sex: Female (Spayed) Age: 3 yrs. Weight: 56 lbs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Sweet little Toffee spent the past 294 days in a local animal control. She is a very lucky girl to be alive. Toffee is getting used to being in a home and learning manners. She is also learning to play. She watches her foster brothers play and is very interested in joining. Unfortunately she was just spayed so she has to be quiet for a few weeks and then she can join in. She is great with other dogs, cats, and children. Give her a sofa and people and she is content to watch TV. If you are a family who wants to add a calm, loving, sweet girl who wants to learn to be a family member, please contact Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Rosie Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound Sex: Female (Spayed) Age: 5 yrs. Weight: 64 lbs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Rosie was picked up as a stray by an area animal control. She was heartworm and Ehrlichia positive, but she has completed treatment. With all of these problems, she is a very sweet girl who gets along with kids and dogs. We are told that she also gets along with cats. She is on several medications in preparation for her heart worm treatment. Rosie would love a family who likes to walk and especially likes to watch TV and give her belly rubs and ear scratches. She says that she won't take up much room and has lots of love to give. A 6 ft. privacy is also a must, especially with hounds who love to run and sniff. If you want a sweet, gentle girl to add to your family, please contact Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

      Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Gunther was picked up as a stray by a local animal control. He was heartworm positive, Lyme and Ehrlichia positive as well, but he has completed treatment. It is evident that he has had a hard life because his teeth are worn down to nubs. Even with a neglectful life he still loves people, especially children. He tries to play with his 4-legged foster brother, but Cooper is a senior who just wants to lay around and eat treats. Gunther still tries:). He is looking for a loving home with a family who will give him the love and attention that he deserves. If you are that family, please call Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Reeses Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Weight: 52 lbs Age: 8 yrs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Reeses is a fun loving clown. His favorite thing to do is jump. He would be great for agility or a runner who needs a partner. Learning tricks comes easy for this smart special boy. He does the "commando crawl", sit, down, shake hands, roll over among other things. He loves the clicker and playing with a box. Reeses is crate trained and house trained. Despite being abandoned, he loves people but is too energetic for young children. Older children would be a better match. Playing with other dogs is something that he could do all day long. Cats are another story. He thinks of them as squeaky toys and therefore shouldn't be adopted to anyone with cats. If you want a fun-loving clown to keep you on your toes, please call Dallas or Esther at 757-583-8777 or email rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net .

      Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Angel is a very sweet 9 yr. old female American Staffordshire Terrier. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on vaccinations. She weighs 61 lbs. and wants to be a lap dog. She is crate trained, house trained and knows sit, down, stay, and her left and right. She loves people, children and most other dogs; however, she is selective about which doggy friends she plays with. When she wants something, or wants to go out, she sings. She has a very good voice. She was abandoned by her irresponsible owner with her 10 one-week old puppies. Her pups have been adopted, but not her. She desperately wants her "forever" home. Angel needs a family who is experienced with this breed and will give her the love and patience she deserves. If you have room in your heart and home, please contact Dallas or Esther at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: Coonhound / Mixed (short coat). Breed: Coonhound mix Gender: Male Age: approx. 9 years Weight: 49 lbs Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Sunny was in a high-kill shelter in western Virginia. The rescue group in that area was desperately trying to get him out before his time was up. Rainbow Animal Rescue was called to determine if we had space. We sent out a plea for a foster and found one at the last minute. He was transported to Rainbow on Saturday, January 25, 2014 before our big snow. Sunny is heartworm positive and will begin treatment as soon as possible. It seems like he likes the snow his foster reports. Sunny is loving his big comfy bed and all of the hugs and attention he is receiving. He is good with children and other dogs and has met several cats while walking and didn't seem to care about them. He is just looking for his furever, loving home so he never has to come so close to losing his life. If you are that special family who is looking for a loving companion who wants to walk, just call Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mailrainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

      Willow

      rescue
Breed: Bluetick Coonhound-Treeing Walker Coonhound Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed (short coat). Willow Breed: Blue Tick Coonhound/Walker Hound Mix Age: approx. 5 yrs. Sex: Female-will be spayed on May 26 Weight: 42 lbs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Willow came to Rainbow very "shut down". So much so that she wouldn't even walk. We had to carry her into the vet. Her story: The story began when she was "bothering the neighbors' cats" according to one of the shelter volunteers, so animal control trapped her. She spent the entire time in the animal control kennel cowering in the corner. Rainbow received a call at 11:15 am on April 18 begging us to help this poor little girl. She was scheduled to be euthanized at noon! Without hesitation, we agreed to pull her. She was in a high kill shelter in a rural area of another state. A rescue group in a neighboring county agreed to physically pull her and board her at their vet until transport could be arranged. She was transported the next day to our vet where we met her for the first time. She had her head tucked between the side of the car and the seat :(. We carried her into the vet and boarded her so she could be vetted before taking her to the foster. Two days later we transferred her to her foster. She was initially scared but her two new foster siblings made her feel welcome. She has come out of her shell and loves playing with "Leroy" her foster brother. Mabel just keeps an eye on her to be sure that she is comfortable. Willow loves her new fosters and gets along with other dogs. We're not sure about cats but because of the original reason for her "incarceration", she should probably go to a home with no cats. Small children might also scare her so she will need a home with older, calm children. A 6 ft. privacy is also a must, especially with hounds who love to run and sniff. UPDATE: Our little Willow had her consult with the Ophthalmologist. She IS blind in the left eye. They think it was an old eye injury which requires no medications and isn't painful. We want to THANK RADAR (Raising Aid for Dogs At Risk) for paying for the consult! If you are that loving, caring home who would protect her for the rest of her life, please call Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.
