Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Suki is our little old lady dog, at least 15 years old and ready to find a loving foster hospice home. She is sweet, loving and affectionate. She's lived a tough life and is just looking for a warm bed and short walks. She loves people but should be kept away from small animals and cats. Suki is a sweet girl who really wants to live out her sunset years in a home. Do you have room? I am up to date on all of my vaccinations, spayed and micro-chipped. If you would like to meet me, please email for an application or visit our website to download one! My Way Home adopts in the Portland metro area only.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed (medium coat). This is Aubrey, a shy girl who is now learning her role in the world. She's about 40 pounds and approximately 3 years old and came to us after being left behind when her first family moved. Aubrey was understandably anxious when she arrived but she is quickly adapting and learning. She is very eager to please and is super smart. She loves treats which been helpful with her training. She walks great on a leash and responds well to verbal commands and love to give quick kisses to let you know how grateful she is for her second chance at a loving home. She is still getting used to everyday things like going up stairs and through doors, but she does great with some encouragement. Aubrey has done great in her foster home with the mellow cats. She has done well with most dogs, but she is still learning that most dogs want to be friends. She will benefit from a loving home that will continue to help her blossom. She would be a great hiking buddy or a wonderful companion for adventures. The ideal home for her would be on the quiet side with someone who will continue to work with her to build her confidence. I am up to date on all of my vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped. My adoption fee is $250. Breed: American French Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: French Bulldog / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Some thought he was gone forever, but Agent Cooper has returned. While being fostered at My Way Home he did well with other dogs when there was no competition for anything of value, so he was adopted into a multi-canine home. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the right fit for him. Coop is a loner who loves to meet new people and have new experiences, but he’d prefer not to have any furry roommates. This sweet, laid-back, 55 pound tripod is ready to investigate all life has to offer with you. He travels well in a car, having done extensive road trips to the Midwest and back, and is excellent on leash for walks about town. At two years old, Cooper is already house-trained, knows lots of commands, and is eager to learn more. He loves to be out and about, and would be happy to join you wherever you go--even to outdoor restaurants. He only asks that you order him a piece of cherry pie and a cup of coffee. He takes it black. My adoption fee is $250. If you would like to meet me, please visit our website http://www.mywayhomedogrescue.org/ to download an application! Sugar

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). This is Sugar, an adult German shepherd who is just learning her way around the world. Raised alone in a backyard, she hasn't seen much outside so her new family should be willing to work with her. She will require a confident and experienced owner. Sugar can be fearful and unfortunately doesn't warn with a growl - she snaps. You gotta watch this so no kids - at least not yet. With some love and training, you can help her develop more confidence and teach her better coping skills for when she feels threatened. She is not aggressive, she's just scared. If you can work with this, you're gonna get a great dog. She seems to be a homebody dog and will benefit from a routine. She loves going for walks and sniffing around the yard. She is not the kind of dog who would like going on big adventures. Not now anyway, maybe later with more confidence. Around the home you will find Sugar a gentle, loving dog. She wants to be with you and will follow you from room to room often carrying her favorite toy. She loves her toys and won't destroy them. She is gentle enough that even our puppy can take the toys away. She mostly ignores other dogs but does play well with our puppy. They like to wrestle and to play tug. I am up to date on all of my vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped. My adoption fee is $250. If you would like to meet me, please email for an application or visit our website mywayhomedogrescue.org to download one! My Way Home adopts in the Portland metro area only.

Posted Breed: Jindo (Korean) / Mixed (medium coat). Formerly feral, this shy girl is Lady, a 4-5 year old Jindo mix who really just wants to be part of a family. She's a lower energy dog, content to relax around the house; Lady will benefit from a confident, experienced owner who has previously worked with shy dogs and can appreciate a dog who rather watch you from across the room than to cuddle on the sofa. Lady is still learning world-skills but has come along really well. She is indifferent to strangers. She doesn't like riding in a car but crates well for it. She likes walks but she's still learning to walk on her leash. Lady loves other dogs and is playful and confident with them. She also seems to learn from the example set by pack-mates so she will benefit from another confident dog in her pack. I am up to date on all of my vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped. My adoption fee is $250. If you would like to meet me, please email for an application or visit our website mywayhomedogrescue.org to download one! My Way Home adopts in the Portland metro area only.
