Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Angel is a very sweet 9 yr. old female American Staffordshire Terrier. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on vaccinations. She weighs 61 lbs. and wants to be a lap dog. She is crate trained, house trained and knows sit, down, stay, and her left and right. She loves people, children and most other dogs; however, she is selective about which doggy friends she plays with. When she wants something, or wants to go out, she sings. She has a very good voice. She was abandoned by her irresponsible owner with her 10 one-week old puppies. Her pups have been adopted, but not her. She desperately wants her "forever" home. Angel needs a family who is experienced with this breed and will give her the love and patience she deserves. If you have room in your heart and home, please contact Dallas or Esther at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

More About American Staffordshire Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Beagle-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: Hound / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Breed: Hound/Beagle Mix Sex: Female (Spayed) Age: approx. 2 years Weight: 33 lbs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Shiloh is a very shy girl who was beginning to come out of her shell with her family who adopted her in November 2016. They had fostered her since the previous August. We received a call recently, January 2017, from the family stating that they were returning her because she wasn't progressing adequately. She had chewed on the bed and was still having a few accidents. They also stated that she had been "a little aggressive" with their other two dogs. She never displayed any aggression when she was with the other group who had her. She had been attacked by a bassett hound at one event and went and hid in the corner without ever retaliating. She is getting better about walking outside and had become comfortable with her family. Shiloh needs a quiet home with no small children and a family who is willing to be patient with her and give her the time she needs to "learn the ropes". If you are that special family, please contact Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

Special Needs: Deaf and Visually Impaired Emily Special Needs: Deaf and Visually Impaired Breed: Lab Mix Sex: Female Weight: 57 lbs Age: approx. 12 yrs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Emily was pulled from a high kill shelter in North Carolina. She was scared to death and snapping at everyone. She was heartworm positive and found to be deaf and visually impaired, thus the snappy behavior. She is on crate rest currently while recovering from heartworm treatment. The ideal family is one with no children unless they are older and calm and no other pets unless you can segregate them. She needs a loving, caring place to live out the remaining days of her life. If you are that very special family who can give this old gal the life she deserves, please contact Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

      Breed: Beagle-Husky Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: Beagle / Husky / Mixed. Jack originally came from a family who purchased him at 8 weeks old and stuck him in a kennel in the back yard and didn't play or walk him. They finally realized that he needed to be rehomed. Rainbow took him June 2016. We found a home for him in August and just had him returned because he was too much for them. He loves to play, play, play and gets along with cats, dogs, and kids. Because of his high energy, he needs a family with older children. He tends to knock the smaller ones over in his excitement to play. He started a training class but it was suspended. You won't find a sweeter, smarter boy. If you are that active family who wants a 4 legged family member, please contact Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Reeses Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Weight: 52 lbs Age: 8 yrs Vaccinations: Current Microchipped: Yes Reeses is a fun loving clown. His favorite thing to do is jump. He would be great for agility or a runner who needs a partner. Learning tricks comes easy for this smart special boy. He does the "commando crawl", sit, down, shake hands, roll over among other things. He loves the clicker and playing with a box. Reeses is crate trained and house trained. Despite being abandoned, he loves people but is too energetic for young children. Older children would be a better match. Playing with other dogs is something that he could do all day long. Cats are another story. He thinks of them as squeaky toys and therefore shouldn't be adopted to anyone with cats. If you want a fun-loving clown to keep you on your toes, please call Dallas or Esther at 757-583-8777 or email rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net .

      Reese

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Norfolk, VA
Posted Breed: Hound / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Reese was due to be put down within hours of being pulled from a shelter in NC in April 2012. She was heartworm positive and very sick. She is completely healthy now and microchipped, spayed, and up-to-date on vaccinations. She is around 5 years old and about 40 lbs. She is dog reactive and would benefit from training to help her overcome her fear of other dogs. She has not been around cats, so we're not sure how she would act. Reese has been around children ages 2-17 years and does fine with them. However, we probably would not recommend a home with small children because she does have a lot of energy. She tends to jump up on people, which we are working on. She is crate and house trained. Reese needs to go a home with a family who is active because she loves to run with her foster mom. She does well on a leash. She loves to play, but also loves to cuddle. Reese is a survivor and looking for her forever family. If you are that special, active family, please call Esther or Dallas at 757-583-8777 or e-mail rainbowanimalrescue@cox.net.
