Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Here's an update from Steffi's foster momma: Do you have a large breed male family dog that needs a playmate to expend his energy? Meet Steffi! Steffi is approximately two and a half years old, who loves to play with her canine friends. When she is not playing, Steffi loves to lounge on the couch and watch her favorite TV shows. She is housebroken, crate and doggy door trained, and knows basic commands. As Steffi is a Pitbull mix, she needs to be in a family that has extensive experience with the breed. In addition, due to Steffi’s energy level, she will do best in a family with older children. She is very motivated by treats, so training is pretty easy! If you are interested in meeting Steffi, please complete the on-line application at www.helpadogsmile.org and her foster momma will follow-up with you to determine compatibility. Her adoption fee of $175 helps with medical expenses of the rescue. Thank you!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: CHANDLER, AZ
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Hi I am Jolly. I am looking for my own forever home. I am 5 months old and I am a tiny girl weighting about 4 pounds. My sister and our mom Jenna were found outside a veterinary clinic. The clinic folks were very nice to us but a clinic is sort of a scary place and you cannot play too much, and I LOVE to play! The vet clinic folks called Help a Dog Smile Rescue and now I live in a foster home. I now live with my sister and Uncle Enzo. Enzo is available for adoption just like us, but he is way older and bigger than we are. Enzo is 7 years old and weighs about 13 pounds. We love playing with Enzo. We bite his ears, steal his food, run under his feet making him trip and take his sleeping spot. Sometimes he grumbles at us but we know that he adores us, so we jump on him until he runs away to another room!!! Mostly we play with each other and some of our toys. My foster mom is very dedicated to my potty training lessons, so when I have accidents she takes me outside right away. So now I mostly just wait until I am outside to “do my business”. I always last through the night without having any accidents. I sleep in a kennel or in a dog bed right by my foster mom’s bed. She is so proud of me for sleeping all through the night. I am smaller than my sister Joy but I have longer legs, so I am faster than she is. I like to meet new people and I love to explore. I am not afraid of anything! My sister Joy and I love to be outside in the yard. There are so many things out there I can put in my mouth. My foster mom takes most of my new-found treasures away, but she always replaces them with little pieces of yummy carrots. I MUST always have someone out in the yard with me to keep me safe. I am simply too little to be exploring the yard on our own. My foster mom is teaching me some commands. I know how to “stay” and I come to her when she whistles. If she claps her hands real loud I stop what I am doing, (this mostly happens when we are jumping on Enzo or chewing his ears and he makes that real funny grumbling noise). I am a healthy puppy. I have been spayed and have a micro-chip. I did have to have puppy shots too but I am all done with that. Yay! I am ready for my forever home. Are you ready for me? Because I am a puppy I am going to be with my family for a long time, a lifetime. Could you be my new family? If so, I would love to meet you! If you would like to meet me and you live in the Phoenix area, please fill out an online application at http://www.helpadogsmile.org/adopt/application/ . My adoption fee is $250 dollars. Once you fill out an application my foster mom can contact you. She may even visit your home and yard so she can show you what tiny spaces I manage to get into. It seems like her favorite saying around me is “something else to puppy proof”.

      Location: CHANDLER, AZ
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). What a SUPER SENIOR. Hi, my name is Little LIDO and I am one cute, tiny and very lucky little fellow! I was rescued from the middle of the road in downtown Phoenix... yes, cars passed me by but I was lucky to catch the eye of a wonderful Rescue lady and was rushed to safety. Whew, that was close! I am a little bit of a dog just waiting for my own lap to snuggle into. I have been neutered, microchipped , vaccinated and just had a 'doggy dental'. 100% potty-trained, too! Do you have room for me? I am only 5 lbs of sweetness, a true 'pocket pup'. To learn more about me, you can call my foster mom at 602-561-9360 or complete an application at www.helpadogsmile.org. and we can schedule a time to meet. I would love to find my new forever home... I'm ready to go! Due to my tiny size, I cannot go to a home with small children. Although I am 9 years old, I still have plenty of spunk to live several more years! Adoption fee helps the Rescue with medical costs of our dogs. Thank you!

      Location: CHANDLER, AZ
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). Enzo gave his rescuers a exciting two hour chase before deciding it might be nice to be 'rescued' from the streets. Settling in nicely in his foster home, Enzo has already learned the doggy door. This calm, easy-going , adult fellow is neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, ready to enjoy the good life in his forever home. If it is with you, please complete an application at www.helpadogsmile.org and his foster mom will contact you. Adoption fee helps with medical expenses of the rescue. Update 5/31: Enzo is a delightful little 5 year old minpin who has wonderful house manners and seems to like everyone he meets. He was found running the streets and when no one claimed him we did! He is housetrained and uses a dog door. He is very inquisitive and seems to be entranced by mirrors:) He sleeps soundly all night and will sleep on the bed or in his own bed right by you! He would love a home with another small adult dog to play with and he would be in heaven if someone would take him for walks. His face looks like it has some gray on it but both his vets believe that that is just his coloring as his teeth, activity, and blood work all indicate he is at tops 5 years young. He is very healthy and has been neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on shots! His adoption fee of $175 helps us to cover his medical care:) Please fill out an application at helpadogsmile.org if you would like a well behaved canine gentleman in your family:)

      Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: CHANDLER, AZ
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Meet Harley, the sweetest, neutered, senior Rat Terrier you would ever want to meet! Unfortunately, his owner was no longer able to care for him and asked for our help to find him a forever home. At 10 years young, this fellow is calm, housetrained, knows basic commands and has a great temperament. He is not a barker and is friendly with everyone. He is fine with the other dogs in his foster home but doesn't really play much. He enjoys just hanging out with his humans so he could be happy as an only dog, too. Do you need a walking buddy? Harley is currently on a daily walking routine and eating healthier and is now a svelte 20 pounds! Thank you to his fostermom for such commitment in helping him lose those few extra pounds! Harley loves car rides, is great on the leash, uses the doggy door or else will gently scratch at the door to go outside! This guy is a great sleeper and prefers to sleep on the bed with his humans although he may snore a bit from time to time! He has just received a clean bill of health after having a nice doggy dental and an update on vaccinations. If you are looking for a laid-back, loving, gentle companion, please consider adopting this wonderful dog. He will repay you daily with his devotion. Please complete an application at www.helpadogsmile.org and his foster mom will be in contact with you. His adoption fee helps with medical expenses of the rescue. Thank you!
