Posted Breed: Border Collie / Australian Kelpie / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact DFW Pup Patrol (info@dfwpuppatrol.com) for more information about this pet. Rocky was a dog that was kept outside all the time....he never got to go indoors, take walks, or leave his yard. When he escaped one day and was hit by a car, his family did not have the means to get him to a vet. Another rescue stepped in and paid for his surgery, and then fully vetted him! After all that the family decided to surrender him, and now he is patiently waiting his REAL furever home. He is estimated to be around 4-5 years old, and currently weighs about 50 lbs. He is a shy boy that is finally learning what being part of a family is. He is crate and house trained, is fine with cats, loves other dogs, and is good with children. Rocky will do best in a home where he has at least one other pup to be with. He has been through some basic obedience training, walks well on leash, and is well behaved. He loves to snuggle and be with his humans. If you are interested in adding this pup to your family, please click here to view our adoption info and where you will find the link to fill out our online Pre-Adoption Application. Any questions can be directed to us at info@dfwpuppatrol.com. All of our adoptable pups have an adoption fee of $225, regardless of our expenses, and it includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm test for pups 6 months and older, heartworm treatment if tested positive, deworming and/or fecal test, parasite treatment if tested positive, microchipping, any immediate known health issues, and pups 4 months and older are kept current on monthly heartworm prevention. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Rat-Cha
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (long coat). We believe Monty is a Rat Terrier mix estimated to have been born in May, 2012. What he's mixed with is anyone's guess...we think maybe long-haired Chihuahua or maybe even some Italian Greyhound with those long legs and slim physique. He weighs about 14 lbs. He loves attention and to cuddle with his person. He is an obedient pup and loves to please, but does need structure and rules in his home. He's currently taking medication (Prozac) for anxiety and should be in a home without small children. Once he gets settled in a new calm, structured forever home we have every reason to believe he can at that point be completely weaned off of his anxiety medication. He does well with most dogs, but needs a calm introduction and can be a bit of a resource guarder. Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Fox Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Penelope was born on 06/21/17, we believe she is a Yorkie/Fox Terrier mix pup, and she currently weighs about 9.8lbs. She is quite outgoing and confident once she gets to know you. She is a little shy in the beginning. She loves to run around with other dogs, and is very playful. She’ll gladly play in a puppy pool anytime. She is 100% a puppy and will find things she shouldn’t and chew on them, so she will need a firm, but consistent family who has the time and patience to help her through her puppy phase in life so she can be a wonderful forever part of a family. She is working on leash training, is crate trained, and is working on house training, which she is doing great at. Penelope will need another dog that she can play with as she is more of a dog puppy than a people puppy. She will also need consistent walks to help with her energy and confidence. Posted Breed: Fox Terrier / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (short coat). Houdini was born on 06/21/17, we believe he is a Yorkie/Fox Terrier mix pup, and he currently weighs about 11lbs. He is a sweet puppy, but very shy. He is 100% a puppy and will run off with a shoe or sock if they are left where he can get them, so he will need a family who has the time and patience to help him through his puppy phase in life so he can be a wonderful forever part of a family. He has not been on a leash too much yet and will need continued help with this. He is crate trained, is working on house training and, in a calm environment without distractions, he will sit for a treat. We believe Houdini will do best in a calm and structured environment. He is a bit shy at first and standoffish with strangers, but will warm up then. He would be best in a home without small children, as fast movements seem to scare him. He would benefit from being in a home with another dog to help him learn the ropes. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Lily Belle is a very sweet little Chi-Chi mix who was saved from a rural kill shelter. She is all of 5 lbs and is about 6 years old. She loves to be near her person (if you back up you have to make sure she's not behind you first!) and loves to snuggle under the covers. She's not too interested in toys or playing much...she's content to sleep or be coddled all day long. She's not a fan of the crate, but she does well in there when her foster Mom is gone. She gets SO excited to see her return! She's fine with other pups, but has not shown interest in interacting with them. She'd be great as an only pup companion! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Durango! He is estimated to have been born around January 2015 and weighs about 48 pounds. We believe he is a Lab mix. He is the perfect mix of fun energy and laid back. He came into rescue when a good Samaritan spotted him as a stray. He was very shy and took a bit to catch, but once caught he was and is a total sweetheart! He has decided that he's spent enough time outside so he likes to go outside and do his business then come back in, unless you are outside with him. He's ok with other dogs, doesn't play with them but gets along fine with them. He loves his chew bones! He also loves treats, and will spin in circles when you have one for him, earning him the nickname Spin Doggy. He's completed heartworm treatment and is ready to meet his family! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact DFW Pup Patrol (info@dfwpuppatrol.com) for more information about this pet. Hey everyone! Opie here, or Dopie Opie as my foster family lovingly calls me. I am a goofy pup with lots of energy. I am a personable and precious Labrador Retriever mix boy weighing approximately 60 lbs and they estimate I was born about July of 2015. I had an owner at one time, but apparently they didn't want me anymore. I wandered up to someone's house with a leash wrapped around my neck. The owner of the home was just about to have a new baby so they had no room in their home for me, which is how I ended up at a local city Animal Shelter. It just so happens it was my lucky day as a Pup Patrol volunteer was there picking up another pup and fell in love with me! She waited until my stray hold was up then came right back to get me when my family never showed up. I get along great with other dogs and kids....I'm overly excited about cats, so a home with no cats is probably better for me. I am quite fit and athletic and can clear a 6-foot fence with no problem, so please have a tall secure fence that will keep me in. I cannot be left alone outside all day as I will find a way out. I am crate trained and should be crated when you are gone. I walk great on leash and have been basic obedience trained. I will need a loving, committed family who has the necessary time to spend with me as I am very social, love my exercise, love to learn, and must be a forever integral part of a family. I love to play fetch and will bring you back the toy you throw. I am housetrained and I know how to sit and shake already. He has been potty & crate trained, and can even be left out of the crate while his foster is at work. He has learned some basic obedience commands, and how to walk nice on leash too!
