Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, December 3rd from 1-4pm and Sunday, December 4th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Rex is a 2 year old JRT mix. We were asked by a friend to take him in. He was previously living with dogs and cats. He lived in pretty sad conditions. He was originally bought so he could be a therapy dog for a child in the home. Unfortunately they did not follow through on socializing him outside the home or any of the necessary training. But he has a new chance to start over with us! Rex is on the quieter side. He is not a typical high energy JRT. He is sensitive. He's best suited for a home with older kids and/or adults who have dog experience and are willing to give him time to acclimate. He's not the type to jump into your arms right away. He spent the the first day and a half just hanging out in his crate (by his choice). We didn't force him to interact and we didn't make him do anything. He did eventually come out, wander around and we're just beginning to see him get comfortable. It will take a week or so for him to find his way in a new home. Rex is an option to go to a home with a cat. Rex is a lover. He is a snuggler and a cuddler. He is a lap dog. He does like playing with other dogs. He is just starting to play with the others in his foster home. He is not a barker. He is not a loud dog. He is a quiet soul. He loves fluffy beds to snuggle in. Rex is best suited for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years and children over the age of 11. He is an option for a home with cats. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. He has a less shedding coat but not necessarily one that is an option for those who truly have allergies rather than simply wanting a dog who sheds less...Cornbread is a sensitive, quiet guy. He is gentle and kind. He's not an "in your face" kind of dog. Rather he's one who waits patiently and as he gets to know you or you give him time and attention then he shows you his love...He gets along well with other dogs. He currently lives in a foster home with other dogs. He also goes to the dog park. Cornbread is an option to go to doggy day camp and/or to join a sibling in his new home. Cornbread came from the shelter. He was listed as a stray which means that no one knows who his previous owner was and why they didn't come for him. But we're ok because we've promised him a wonderful new home. Cornbread is not a barker. He is an option to live in an apartment or condo setting. Cornbread doesn't mind his crate. He of course would love to share your bed or have a comfy bed on the floor once he's earned your trust in your home. Cornbread is an option to go to a home with cats as he currently has met the foster cats and does just fine. Cornbread is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they must be over the age of 8. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She has a non-shedding coat that is an option for those who have allergies or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. She will require regular grooming and we will look for an applicant that understands the grooming needs for dogs such as her. Snowflake is very sensitive. She's not a dog who strangers or folks she doesn't know can run up and just swoop up quickly. She is a dog who needs her people to be slow and quieter when approaching her initially. Now, obviously when she knows you, she doesn't care at all if you grab her quickly and she's going to be the first to jump in your arms. But it takes building some initial trust for that to happen. Snowflake gets along with other dogs. She actually is pretty indifferent to them. She just ignores them. She happily co-exists with the foster dogs in her current home and everyone is very happy. She did seem to get a bit of joy though in rubbing all over their beds when they were out of the room. Shhh. Snowflake is a quieter, sweet lap type of dog. She likes to go on walks and seems to walk pretty well on the leash. She loves loves loves to smell everything. She gets so excited when there are a lot of dog smells. Snowflake is an option to live in an apartment or condo setting. She's small and not a nuisance barker. Snowflake is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. She will need an experienced home that understands her need for a soft touch initially. If there are kids in the home or visiting they will need to be teenagers. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Despite being rescued from the shelter with a shattered pelvis that had already fused together before it could receive medical attention, she is amazingly able to walk, but with a limp or hop of her back hind leg. The vet who saw her during her time in foster remarked that it's "truly the tenacity of dogs and their own will to heal." Despite her limitations, you'll never find another dog happier to see you when you come home at the end of the day, or even move from one room to the next and catch her eye! Athena is a total cuddle bug. She loves to curl up next to you and nap while you watch TV, and although her mobility is impaired, she's also great on leash during potty breaks. She loves meeting new people, is super friendly, is fine being petted by strangers, and is good with men. She'll even let you carry her around like a little baby. Athena is also very smart, so if you block off a portion of the house, you can bet she'll be trying to nose her way in to see what's so special about that hidden area! A sturdy doggy gate can keep her in areas where she's allowed, though. Athena knows how to use a doggie door and a potty pad, and is very close to being house trained. She figured out the doggie door situation in about 5 minutes, so she's a fast learner. Athena sleeps in her crate in your room at night, and, after a few whimpers (she would always rather be with you on the bed instead!), she'll settle down and not make a peep until morning. After a few days of learning what time you get up in the morning, Athena seems to adjust and wait patiently until you're ready to start the day with her! She's a good little eater, loves treats, and knows "sit." She also gets along well with other dogs, and even won over a grumpy Shih Tzu foster brother, who can be tough to make friends with! Athena will cry for a few minutes when you leave the house, but she settles down quickly, and isn't much of a barker. Because of how her pelvis healed, Athena shouldn't be made to go on long walks or hikes. She shouldn't do forced exercise but rather just let her go at her pace and let her tell you when she needs a break. Even still, she can be super playful for short periods, loves toys, and loves to initiate play sessions with other doggies. For her health, she needs to be a couch-potato dog, because at some point she just adapted to any pain she feels from the way her body has chosen to heal. She's a true little hero with an unbreakable spirit! We are looking to place Athena in a home where any children are over the age of 10. She is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 5 years. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. He's not a big guy and he has a small head like a Greyhound. He is a very sweet loving dog. He has a gentle, kind temperament. He was found and a wonderful family took him in. They posted signs, went to the local shelters, etc and no one came forward. Poor guy. The family had 2 other dogs and wasn't really looking for a third and so we took him in so we could find him a fabulous home. Licorice is an option to go to a home with other dogs. He can be with big and small dogs. He is an option to go to the dog park, doggy day camp or to join a family with doggy siblings. He could also do really well living by himelf and her people. He could go to work with mom or dad or hang out at home. He could also even really live in an apartment or condo. He's not too big and he doesn't require a ton of exercise. Licorice is an option for a first time dog owner as long as they are prepared for owning a dog and have done the necessary research prior to applying. If there are children in the home he is an option to go to a home with kids over the age of 8. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. You can see the cute little wrinkles on her face and whenever she "smiles" you see all the wrinkles! Whisper loves the teenagers in her foster home. She gets super excited when they come home. They love playing with her and when it's too hot outside they like to hang out in the TV room. They're usually laying all over each other and all tangled up. Whisper loves to fetch! She's a fetching machine. You will give up before she does! Whisper came into our rescue with another dog. She was found abandoned down in a riverbed with no homes anywhere near. After several months and no one coming forward we were contacted and asked if we would be willing to help find her a home. Whisper has an easy breezy type of coat to maintain. Whisper is best suited for a more experienced home. She's not one to run and jump all over people she doesn't know and she'll be intimidated by them initially. Give her a second and she'll adjust. She could easily be a walking, running, biking or hiking friend. Foster Notes: Whisper is an amazing dog! She is doing fine. She is a quick study. She is learning to walk on a leash and has adjusted well to our schedule. She does great with our dog and even with cats. Whisper feels comfort in her crate at night, but would do even better cuddled in someone's bed. Definitely a love bug, who loves to cuddle! **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, November 19th from 1-4pm and Sunday, November 20th from 12-3pm or until adopted. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Snickers is a 1 year old Beagle mix who is a tiny and quiet girl. She weighs in the 10 lbs range. Our little girl is a bit on the shy side at first, but once she trusts you, she loves to have you rub her back or belly. She happily coexists with her canine foster brother but isn't really interested in joining in their games. Once she feels secure in her new home, she's a loving and loyal girl who likes nothing more than to lay with her head in her person's lap and relax. She'll be a minimal exercise kind of girl and more of a couch buddy. Snickers is crate-trained and finds comfort in her crate. She sleeps there quietly at night. She is not a nuisance barker. Snickers is an option for those who have had a dog in the last 5 years. If there are children in the home, they need to be over the age of 9. She is an option for a home with dogs and/or cats, or she could be a one and only.

Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Patsy is a 4-5 year old Dachshund mix. She gets along well with other dogs. She currently lives with big and small dogs and probably finds her courage with other dogs. Patsy is a dog who needs an experienced home. She has fear issues with strangers which makes her not a great candidate for those homes that have people coming and going and who aren't wiling to crate her or put her in a separate room. She is most comfortable when she isn't forced to interact with strangers. But she loves the quiet home with her human. Patsy will require a home that is patient but most of all that is committed to her. She is dog who will bond with her people but not with strangers. It will take time. In her foster home she bonded immediately with the foster mom but the male in the house it took about a month before she really truly trusted him. He was consistent, patient and he never gave up on her. Now he can pick her up or do just about anything to her. But it took someone with experience and patience. If you have a quiet home, not a lot of folks in and out, are experienced and willing to give a dog a home that will love you, then Patsy may be an option. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She's still kind of on the thinner side and needs to fill out. She was an owner surrender to our rescue because she got too big and the owner wasn't able to handle her. She's a great dog who gets along with other dogs. She currently lives with several big dogs. She is an option for going to the dog park or doggy day camp. She could also join another dog in her foster home. Maple sleeps in a crate at night. She's an appropriately active dog who isn't the high GSD energy but more the goofy, droopy, derp derp kind of behavior of a hound who lays around and has spurts of energy. She would do well with daily walks, occasional visits to the dog park or a leisurely stroll along the beach. Maple could be a hiking dog if she wasn't expected to go quickly and with earnest but more with a go with the flow, "enjoy smelling the roses" type of journey. Maple is an option for kids over the age of 8. She is best suited for those who have had a dog in the last 3 years. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Odie is a 2 year old Lab mix. His original owner broke his back and he was unable to care for him and he was passed around the family but eventually a rescue friend was contacted and we were asked to take him in. He was then adopted to a family who did not work with him and returned him when he became too much to handle. Odie is a typical Lab puppy. He's full of life and energy. He's also stubborn and likes to do things his way! He will need basic obedience training and someone who imposes boundaries. Odie loves other dogs. But he can also be a bit overwhelming for those who are shy or reserved. He's very playful and will need someone who is ready to continue to socialize him. He will need a lot of exercise and a home that is ready to take him outdoors running, biking, hiking, the beach and just about any other place! Odie will require a home that is dog experienced and has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are children in the home they need to be over the age of 10 and dog skilled as well. He is not a dog who is an option for a novice or less experienced home. He's a big boy who needs a home that is a leader more so than geared towards positive reinforcement. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
