Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, January 21st from 1-4pm and Sunday, January 22nd from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Zelda and Zeppelin were found wandering the streets and neighbors began to feed them. One day after they'd been hanging out for more than a week, a kind neighbor took them in. Both dogs were super sweet and got along with everyone. When their former homes could not be found, our rescue was contacted and asked if we would take them in. We agreed to do so. Zelda is a lover girl. She's happy-tail-waggin', ready to greet you all the time kind of gal. She's a super lover girl. She is a true medium size gal who will make everyone smile around her. She meets dogs and they're instant buds. She met a Shih Tzu and a Shepherd and she was ready to be friends with both of them. This is a dog who can go to the dog park or doggy day camp. She can join a home that has another dog. Zelda is also an option to join a home that has cats. Her foster home has cats and she's fine with them. Zelda is not a barker. She could be a good option for the office. Zelda is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. Zeppelin and Zelda were found wandering the streets of a neighborhood where neighbors were feeding them but no one was taking care of them. A nice home finally took them in and began the search for their previous home. No one claimed them and our rescue was contacted. Zeppelin is super friendly. He is happy go lucky friendly. He came to his foster home and waltzed in and was like, "Hi, I'm home." He met the foster dogs and he was instantly friends with them. Zeppelin is an option for going to a home that has a cat. He has a beautiful, shiny coat and a sweet disposition to match! When he went to the vet to get fixed, he was quite the popular guy, and so well behaved! His foster describes him as curious, playful, sensitive, kind and energetic. Head rubs are his favorite thing and the way to his heart. He's a smart, trainable boy who quickly learned "sit" and is working on "down." His foster mom says: "He has the perfect energy level. When you want to play, he’ll be an upbeat playful dog, but if you need to work on a homework assignment, he’ll happily curl up in his dog bed and take a nap." He also loves toys and is great at playing fetch! He wasn't a fan of the crate at first, but after being tempted in with some bits of ham, he learned it's a great place to be, and will sleep quietly in his crate through the night. Bradley is fostered with two grumpy older pups and gets along well with them. He comes off a bit shy at first, and the ideal family will give him time to settle in. Once he trusts you, he'll be a loving and social guy who won't want to leave your side! Bradley is an option for those who have had a dog in the last 5 years. If there are children in the home, they need to be over the age of 8. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. He was previously living with dogs and cats. He lived in pretty sad conditions. He was originally bought so he could be a therapy dog for a child in the home. Unfortunately they did not follow through on socializing him outside the home or any of the necessary training. But he has a new chance to start over with us! Rex is on the quieter side. He is not a typical high energy JRT. He is sensitive. He's best suited for a home with older kids and/or adults who have dog experience and are willing to give him time to acclimate. He's not the type to jump into your arms right away. He spent the the first day and a half just hanging out in his crate (by his choice). We didn't force him to interact and we didn't make him do anything. He did eventually come out, wander around and we're just beginning to see him get comfortable. It will take a week or so for him to find his way in a new home. Rex is an option to go to a home with a cat. Rex is a lover. He is a snuggler and a cuddler. He is a lap dog. He does like playing with other dogs. He is just starting to play with the others in his foster home. He is not a barker. He is not a loud dog. He is a quiet soul. He loves fluffy beds to snuggle in. Rex is best suited for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years and children over the age of 11. He is an option for a home with cats. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We will be looking for separate homes for the puppies as we don't place siblings together. Brooklyn is the calmer of the two if such a thing exists in puppies. It simply means maybe he crashes out sooner than Bronx?! Brooklyn is a typical Shih Tzu personality. They are known for being lap warmers of royalty. Their personalities shine! Brooklyn loves to play and gets along super well with his foster canine siblings. He easily can join a new home with another dog or he can be someone's one and only. He doesn't frankly care as long as you have toys, food, treats, love and did I mention food? Yep, our boy is food motivated so it makes training all the easier... Brooklyn is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they need to be over the age of 8. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We expect he will be about 10-12lbs when full grown. He is a quiet little guy who is just learning all about the world. He is on the shy side when first meeting folks. He will take a few to start warming up. He is a lap dog. He loves to hang out with his people. He loves to be loved on once he is comfortable with someone. He is crate trained but you know he'd much rather be in bed with you! Mistletoe is a puppy. You can't forget that. He needs toys and socialization and stimulation. He gets along great with other dogs. He currently is living with big and little dogs and is a great option for the dog park or doggy day camp in a few weeks once he has settled into his new home. He could also be an option for going to work with Mom or Dad. He hasn't proven to be much of a barker so he could also live in an apartment or condo setting. Mistletoe is best suited for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they need to be over the age of 10. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. You can see the cute little wrinkles on her face and whenever she "smiles" you see all the wrinkles! Whisper loves the teenagers in her foster home. She gets super excited when they come home. They love playing with her and when it's too hot outside they like to hang out in the TV room. They're usually laying all over each other and all tangled up. Whisper loves to fetch! She's a fetching machine. You will give up before she does! Whisper came into our rescue with another dog. She was found abandoned down in a riverbed with no homes anywhere near. After several months and no one coming forward we were contacted and asked if we would be willing to help find her a home. Whisper can be dog choosey. If you're looking for a dog who can co-exist with a dog in her home she is an option for those dogs who are non-dominant in personality. She currently lives in a foster with 3 other big dogs and they play all day. But she's not a dog for the active dog park with too many dog personalities. Whisper has always been in a home with teens and pre-teen. She is a people lover. She is a lounger in the house and then she is playful and outgoing while outside. She prefers strangers to stay out of her face until she knows them. So when walking we are diligent to tell folks give her space until she falls in love with them! Foster Notes: Whisper is an amazing dog! She is doing fine. She is a quick study. She is learning to walk on a leash and has adjusted well to our schedule. She does great with our dog and even with cats. Whisper feels comfort in her crate at night, but would do even better cuddled in someone's bed. Definitely a love bug, who loves to cuddle! **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Chaplin is a 4 year old JRT mix. He came in with another dog and was the less confident of the two. He currently lives with other dogs. He gets along great with other dogs. He is not crazy about being picked up initially. It will take some time for him to adjust to being picked up. He needs a home that is experienced and will earn his trust so he isn't scared when he's picked up. Ideally if his new human was willing to leave a leash on him to drag around then he doesn't need to be picked up until he's completely comfortable with his people. Chaplin is not a barker. He is an option for those who live in an apartment or condo setting. He is a dog who could go to doggy day care or to the dog park. Chaplin is an option for an experienced home who has had a dog in the last 3 years. He's tentative. He is an option for a home that has kids over the age of 13. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Jack is a 2 year old Schnauzer mix who we rescued from the shelter. He's a spunky guy who likes to think he's the one in charge! His new home will be an experienced dog savvy home that has had dogs who are a challenge. He is not for the weak of heart or he'll run over the top of them. He needs a home that is savvy enough to set boundaries and willing to enforce rules with him. He needs a balanced home that understands dogs need rules and not just "love". Too much love will create a monster. A balance of love and boundaries will make for a well behaved dog. Jack will require regular grooming. He has a non-shedding coat that will be an option for those who have allergies or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. Jack has not proven to be a nuisance barker. He is dog savvy and does well with other dogs. He has proven to be wicket smart which can be a blessing and a curse in a dog. Set the rules and this guy will follow the lead. Jack is an option for going to a home with cats. He is in a foster home with cats. Jack is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are children in the home, they need to be over the age of 10. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Odie is a 2 year old Lab mix. His original owner broke his back and he was unable to care for him and he was passed around the family but eventually a rescue friend was contacted and we were asked to take him in. He was then adopted to a family who did not work with him and returned him when he became too much to handle. Odie is a typical Lab puppy. He's full of life and energy. He's also stubborn and likes to do things his way! He will need basic obedience training and someone who imposes boundaries. Odie loves other dogs. But he can also be a bit overwhelming for those who are shy or reserved. He's very playful and will need someone who is ready to continue to socialize him. He will need a lot of exercise and a home that is ready to take him outdoors running, biking, hiking, the beach and just about any other place! Odie will require a home that is dog experienced and has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are children in the home they need to be over the age of 10 and dog skilled as well. He is not a dog who is an option for a novice or less experienced home. He's a big boy who needs a home that is a leader more so than geared towards positive reinforcement. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
