Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, February 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, February 19th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Elvis is a 1 year old miniature Cattle Dog mix. He has all the beautiful coloring of a red merle. He was turned into our rescue when his family moved and was unable to take their dogs. We were able to take in Raider and Elvis. Now, we're looking to find their forever home. Elvis was initially shy. He doesn't run right up to you and declare his love. But if you ignore him long enough he will want your attention and he'll come a callin'. Elvis has gone to the dog park. He had a blast playing with the big dogs as well as the little dogs. And in no time he was jumping up and greeting people and he looked like a totally different dog. He found his confidence. He will do so well if he's in a home that has a confident dog. He'll find himself. Elvis currently lives in a home with a cat. He is an option to live with a cat permanently. Elvis is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years (parents and roommates dogs do not count). Elvis is an option to go to a home with kids over the age of 9. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She gets along with almost all humans she has met so far. Viola is currently living in a foster home with big and small dogs. She has done well at the dog park. She has also attended doggy day care and done well. She lives with a cat and leaves the cat alone. Viola has not proven to be a barker. She sleeps in a crate at night. She's a dog who melts in your arms once you pick her up. But she's not likely to be one that runs and jumps and declares her love for you initially. Bagherra though a puppy is wise beyond her age...She watches everyone and takes all the information in. But once you're hers, you are all hers! She would be a great one to go with a home that has a confident dog and owner. She needs someone that helps build her up. She is most comfortable in her home setting. She does ok in the yard as long as it's a defined area. Once she is outside of that area, she will need a home that is patient and works with her building her confidence around sights and sounds that often scare her. Bagherra is an option to live with dogs as she is currently fostered with dogs and came into the rescue having always lived with dogs. Bagherra currently lives with cats. She is an option to go to a home that has cats as long as they don't pick on her! Bagherra is not a barker. She's a quiet girl. She could live in an apartment or condo setting. Bagherra's foster describes her as super sweet and cuddly. Bagherra is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years (parents/relatives dog does not count, sorry!). She gets along well with other dogs. She is an option to go to a home with another dog. She also is an option to go to doggy day camp or the dog park. She is a lap dog. She has always lived with another dog. So if she's going to be someone's one and only, it will just take some patience to help her adjust to life as a single girl and being someone's one and only. She currently lives with a cat. She could easily join a home that has a cat. Raksha has a mixed coat and won't shed much. She won't require extensive grooming. She also won't require extensive exercise. She is just learning to walk on the leash. That was a brand new experience to her (as it is for many of our dogs upon entering our rescue). She could be an option for apartment or condo living. Raksha had never walked on a leash prior to going to her current foster home. But she has mastered it and she is a pro. She loves to play with her foster canine siblings but even more than playing with them she loves to play with tennis balls. She's full of life and spunk but she's also a cuddler and snuggler. According to her foster mom she is so sweet and loving! Raksha is only an option for going to a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years (parents dogs do not count). His leg was broken upon entry at the shelter and it was decided that amputation was the best course of action. Skippy acts as if he has never had a fourth leg ever. He runs, plays, jumps and hops with the best of them. He gets along with all the humans that he has met and loved and he gets along with all the canines he has met too. He lives with dogs now and he has nothing but friends! Skippy has a fabulous personality. He is an ideal dog for just about any type of home. From someone who has never had a dog and needs an easier dog with a great temperament to the person who has had dogs all their lives and doesn't need a dog with a lot of challenges. Skippy is an option to go to work with his new mom or dad. He's a great option for living in an apartment or condo setting. He's an option to go to doggy day care or the dog park. He just is so versatile and will be a great match for city living or country life. Skippy could be an option for kids of many ages. We would consider younger kids if there has been experience with dogs by parents in the home. He is also an option for a home with cats! **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. He has a beautiful, shiny coat and a sweet disposition to match! When he went to the vet to get fixed, he was quite the popular guy, and so well behaved! His foster describes him as curious, playful, sensitive, kind and energetic. Head rubs are his favorite thing and the way to his heart. He's a smart, trainable boy who quickly learned "sit" and is working on "down." His foster mom says: "He has the perfect energy level. When you want to play, he’ll be an upbeat playful dog, but if you need to work on a homework assignment, he’ll happily curl up in his dog bed and take a nap." He also loves toys and is great at playing fetch! He wasn't a fan of the crate at first, but after being tempted in with some bits of ham, he learned it's a great place to be, and will sleep quietly in his crate through the night. Bradley is fostered with two grumpy older pups and gets along well with them. He comes off a bit shy at first, and the ideal family will give him time to settle in. Once he trusts you, he'll be a loving and social guy who won't want to leave your side! Bradley is an option for those who have had a dog in the last 5 years. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, March 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, March 19th from 12-3pm or until adopted. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Jaguar is a 1 year old Terrier mix. She weighs 11lbs. She has all these white specks all over her face and it makes her look old. But her teeth all the way back are bright white and she's a young girl. She's a happy happy girl. She is ready to race up and meet you and love you instantly. She is full of spirit. She gets along well with other dogs. She is currently living with other dogs and she's a hit with everyone. She is an option to go to the dog park or doggy day camp. If there's a friend at home, they'll have a blast playing. Jaguar is not a nuisance barker. She could be an option for living in an apartment or condo setting. She could be an option for going to work with Mom or Dad. She would be a meeter or greeter in the office. Jaguar knows how to use a doggy door. She also sleeps in a crate at night. She was an owner surrender to our rescue when her family was moving and couldn't take her with them. Jaguar is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids they need to be over the age of 7. If the adults have recent dog experience (pet sitting, etc) and have a thorough application but haven't owned a dog in the last 3 years, we will consider very thorough applications only. She is not an option for a home with cats.

She has a smooth coat that doesn't require grooming other than just wash and go! Porsche is a sweet loving girl but initially with strangers she's quiet and reserved. She would be a great option for joining a home that has a confident dog already and she would follow right after them. Coming into a new home she needs that home that will give her space without crowding her and expecting her to meet a bunch of new folks or who want to hold her those first few days. Give her time to adjust and she'll come running to you! Porsche gets along well with other dogs. She came into the rescue with her sister. They need to find their own separate homes as they are both so shy and will blossom once they are separated and with confident other dogs. Porsche is just learning to walk on the leash. She'll have it mastered in no time. Porsche is not a barker. She is an option for living in an apartment or condo setting. She is best suited for a quieter type of environment as opposed to a rowdy, lots of commotion type of home. She is only an option for those who have had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they need to be over the age of 9. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She's a quiet, mellow girl who is looking for that special home that will help her blossom. She is painfully shy with strangers and needs a confident owner and in an ideal world, a confident canine sibling waiting to meet her! Ferrari came into the rescue with her sister Porsche. We sent them to separate homes as we are not looking to place them together. They need an opportunity to blossom and that won't happen with the two of them together. Ferrari is a sweet girl. She took about a week in her foster home to start to come out of her shell. We're seeing new things every day. We expect she'll probably need the same time span in a new foster home. Ferrari gets along well with other dogs and finds her confidence with them. Ferrari is only an option to go to a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are children they need to be over the age of 10. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
