Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, February 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, February 19th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Patty Melt is a 4 year old Chihuahua who came into our rescue as a Mom to our In-N-Out litter. She weighs 8lbs. She is a tiny little girl. She is definitely one who could travel by air or otherwise. She would easily fit under the seat. She is a friendly little girl. She's not the normal snappy, yappy Chi's that sometimes you see. Rather she's a lover girl. She's a cuddler and a snuggler. She's full of life and full of love. She's quite the little character and keeps her foster family in stitches. Patty Melt is good with other dogs. She currently lives in her foster home with other dogs. She also lives with a cat. She gets along well with the cat in her foster home but of course she is also half the size of the cat...that always helps. Patty knows how to use potty pads. If Patty's new home has kids they need to be over the age of 7 due to her small size. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. The Sharks litter, 2 girls and 2 boys are Poodle-Terriers. There are 2 that have the fluffier coats and 2 that don't. We don't know that any of them are necessarily good for allergies. They may be nonshedding or at least less shedding. The two longer haired ones will require regular grooming. The two shorter ones will not! The puppies are super social and friendly. They get along with everyone. They're friendly with all the visitors to their foster home. They are not loud puppies, thank heavens. You'd really never even know they were around. We expect that they will be in the 15lbs range when full grown. They are all socialized with dogs, cats and kids. Kids in the home need to be over the age of 6. We will only consider homes that have had a dog in the last 3 years. Puppies are total lovers. At the end of the day they love nothing more than crawling up on their families and sleeping in their laps. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She's a quiet, mellow girl who is looking for that special home that will help her blossom. She is painfully shy with strangers and needs a confident owner and in an ideal world, a confident canine sibling waiting to meet her! Ferrari is 100% a different dog when she is with another dog and especially a confident dog. She sparkles, she is friendly and outgoing and she loves to play with the other dog. She bonds fairly quickly with her people but she is not going to be a dog who immediately bonds with strangers. She won't be one that runs up to a stranger and says, "I love you!" Rather she's like the shy kid who will hide behind her mom's legs. But put her with a confident dog and watch her blossom! She needs to be with a family that doesn't allow folks to corner her but rather lets her come to them. She bonds with women much more quickly but the men in the home will have to take more time and energy to win her over. Ferrari gets along well with other dogs and finds her confidence with them. Ferrari is an option to go to a home with a cat as well. She currently lives with a cat in her foster home. Ferrari is only an option to go to a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are children they need to be over the age of 10. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. He has a non-shedding coat but may not necessarily be one that is an option for those who have allergies. His coat is slightly wire but also curly like a Poodle. Knight has a fabulous personality. He loves his people. He lives with other dogs and gets along with them. However, he has challenges on a leash. He will need an experienced dog owner who has dealt with dogs who are reactive on a leash. He is not use to a leash and is a bit of a wild child. Knight is not a barker at home. He is crate trained. He knows how to use the doggy door. He was a rescue from the shelter. We don't know his story previously. But we know that some lucky family is going to get an amazing dog. He also gets along with cats. Knight will require a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years.
