Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, February 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, February 19th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Jan. 20th & Sun. Jan. 21st or until adopted. If interested, please fill out an application if you would like the first opportunity to meet prior to the start of the event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Flo Jo, is 1 1/2 year old athletic Shar Pei-Lab mix. She has the wrinkles and the coat of the Shar Pei and all the personality and go-go-go of the Lab. At 40 lbs, she's the perfect medium-sized dog. Flo Jo is full of life, hasn't ever met a stranger, and loves her people with a passion. She is being fostered with 3 big 50-60lb dogs and a little 4lb guy. Flo Jo spends most of her day rough housing with the 3 biggies. It took about 12 hours for her to find her place in the pack and that's pretty much what we see. She is a great option for another dog if introduced properly and given a chance to play. She's a hard player and takes her lead from the other dogs. Rosie is a pup so she may try to push boundaries but she responds well to well behaved dogs and to corrections from her foster family. Flo Jo has no idea what personal space is or why anyone would ever want such a thing. When she’s not playing like a maniac, she’s crawling on top of her foster family and cuddling. She also enjoys getting all dolled up in whatever outfit her fosters put her in. Flo Jo loves to go swimming in her foster home’s pool and has decided that pool water is better to drink than the water in the bowl outside. Flo Jo has excelled in her foster family’s office as well. She just plops down and relaxes while they work and greets people as they come in. She is not a nuisance barker and has been known to sleep through doorbells, knocking and even her foster mom trying to shake her awake. Flo Jo is crate trained and sleeps through the night without a peep, although she would much rather sleep in bed with you if that’s your thing. Flo Jo has not had a single accident in her foster home in the 2+ months that she’s been there. Flo Jo needs a home that is ready for an energetic and playful dog. She needs an experienced owner who is willing to work on basic obedience with her because she is so willing to learn and so trainable. Rosie is both food and toy motivated. Her favorite toys include any ball made by Chuck-It, pool bones made by WestPaw, and thick tug-of-war ropes. In her foster's hands she was already listening well, walking well on a leash, and showed zero resource aggression. However, her foster family separates all dogs during meal time and recommends that her forever home continues this practice since everyone eats at a different pace. Her fosters are experienced dog owners with 4 great dogs who welcomed and showed Flo Jo the ropes. In that kind of home, a dog like Flo Jo just fits in...Flo Jo will need continued work and the right equipment to walk as well as she did with her fosters. Flo Jo has lived with a cat in a previous foster home. The caveat was that this cat is very dog savvy and doesn't run and isn't put off by very many things. So Flo Jo didn't react. Flo Jo will need a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids they need to be over the age of 7. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Halston is an 11 month old Hound mix. He was rescued from the shelter. He was left in their night drop area so his past is unknown. But we know what his future holds! It's all brightness with an amazing family. Halston has been living in a foster home with a Great Pyrenees and 2 kids. They were also joined during the week by a Lab female and apparently as much as Halston liked playing with the GP, he LOVED the Lab and went beserk for her. So if there's another dog in his future home already, our boy is ready! He is also a great option for going to the dog park or doggy day camp to get his play on! Halson very much has that "bey" that Hounds are known for so he is not an option for an apartment or condo setting. He liked to join the GP in his home who would bark at squirrels and outdoor noises. When leaving him if you turn on a fan or TV or some type of noise interrupter from outside he'll be just fine. He was left along inside the home, not crated and he didn't redecorate. He slept through the whole night on his own bed at the foot of his foster parent's bed. Halston likes toys and stuffed toys especially. He'll play with them for a bit. He also loves to be outside in the yard and exploring. He found a patch where the sun would shine down and he loved hanging out there. He had one accident in the past week he was at his foster home. They are also very consistent with letting the dogs come and go outside. Halston is an option for a prepared home for a Hound. We will consider those applications that are thorough and demonstrate that preparation has occurred for training, exercise and socialization. If there are children in the home they need to be over the age of 10 or larger size kids. He's a bit too much for smaller stature kids or kids who haven't been around a large size pup. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Eggo is a 2 year old MaltiPoo who weighs about 10lbs. He was rescued from the what is called the city shelter in Korea. Many dogs are sold to the meat market from here or euthanized. Our friends in Korea always keep tabs on dogs here and try to rescue as many as they can and Eggo was one of them. He has a non-shedding coat that is an option for those who have allergies or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. However, he will require grooming. In many ways Eggo is like a spoiled toddler. He likes things his way and he needs someone who won't give into him but instead will have rules. He doesn't instantly bond. It takes time. The first few days can be rough and he really should just be ignored and allowed to figure out what's going on---more time spent in containment (either xpen or crate) and taken for long walks to get out his energy. He will need that strong owner who sets boundaries and has limits with him but isn't the type of owner who gives up and throws in the towel. He's most likely never going to be that dog who is friendly with everyone. He grows to love his people but he's not all about strangers. If you're a home that isn't willing to put him away when others come over, then he's not a great option. Eggo has lived with other dogs. The dog he has done best with is a really laid back dog who doesn't have dominant tendencies and doesn't mind if he acts large and in charge. He doesn't do well with those dogs who challenge him. He may be small but he is mighty. He's an ideal candidate to be someone's one and only dog. Eggo is not an option for kids. Eggo needs an experienced owner. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We will be doing adoptions on Saturday, January 20th and Sunday, January 21st from 12-4pm at Palo Alto Pet Food Express. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express from 12-4pm on Sat. Jan. 20th & Sun. Jan. 21st or until adopted. If interested, please fill out an application if you would like the first opportunity to meet prior to the start of the event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Papa John the Pizza Man is a 1 year old Shepherd/Pit mix who won over the hearts of his rescuers. It was 110 degrees outside when he wandered up to the rescuer's home, ready to pass out, and stood patiently outside her gate. She brought him inside and called DPS. The adults in his foster home are not usually huge fans of BIG dogs (this guy weighs 80 lbs!) but he's such a gentle soul that he charmed them right from the start. Papa John is fostered with dogs, both big and small, and cats- and amazingly, he gets along with ALL of them! He is just such a love. He's a hang-out kind of guy who likes to follow his foster dad around while he does chores in the yard or the house. His foster dad says he has a shepherd-like personality, on the mellow side. Papa John knows how to use a doggy door and he is not a nuisance barker. He pulls a bit on leash at first, but as soon as you show him who's boss he will fall in line. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue Michael Phelps is a 6 year old Cockapoo mix who is in the search for gold--A gold medal type of home that is.... He has a non-shedding coat that is an option for those who have allergies and/or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. With his hair now, he's a wash and wear type of guy. No long hours in front of the mirror until his hair grows out. Then the groomer will be his friend. Michael was left behind in a home when a family moved and a realtor who then who was selling the house found him. It's the only time he's been left in someone's wake, that's for sure...He's a friendly guy. He loves people but he also values his space. He's not one who wants to be smothered all the time. He likes attention and affection but also appreciates just hanging out. Don't worry he won't require you to show your Olympic credentials before he gives you a big ol' kiss. After being in his foster home, he officially does not like being left outside! Who would blame him! He's ready to make a splash and win you over. Are you the home for him? Michael could easily join a "team" of other canine friends in his new home. Need a fourth to make that relay? Well, look no more. More like the solo route? Well, Michael knows a bit about winning the individual gold too...So whether you have dogs or don't, he's an option. Because he likes to guard his food he will need a home with kids over the age of 13. He's going to be more of an adults dog. He will also require a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Mia is a 1 1/2 year old Dachshund mix. She weighs 12.8lbs. She was an owner surrender at the shelter. They said they didn't have time for her. Well, we have time for her. Mia is a quieter, shy dog who likes a calmer type of environment. She doesn't do well in the frenetic activity of a busy household with kids and everyone. Rather she is a dog who likes it quiet, mellow, sit on your lap and just hang out. She's a lover girl with her people. You have to earn her love. Give her time to adjust and acclimate. Give her some space. You'll be amazed how quickly she is begging for your love and affection. Mia is definitely a lap dog when she knows you. Mia is not a nuisance barker. She could live in an apartment or condo setting. She could hang out in a quiet office. She is crate trained. She walks well on a leash and she enjoys going on walks but won't require extensive exercise. She has lived with dogs and does well with them. She has lived with big and little ones. She has lived with a cat and does well with them. Mia thrives on boundaries and rules. She is a dog who needs an owner who believes in being a leader within the household. Mia will rule the home if she does not have an experienced home that reinforces structure and boundaries. If you're an experienced home who believes in being the leader rather than giving treats hoping the dog will behave, she's a good option. She'll give back 10 fold what she is given and she'll thrive. Mia is only an option for someone who has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids they need to be teenagers or very quiet kids. No small children. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
