Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, February 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, February 19th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

She has a non-shedding coat that is an option for those who have allergies or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. She's a tiny little girl who came to us underweight and we're steadily helping her to get back to a healthy weight. She'll be about 11-12lbs when she gains her weight. She's the sweetest, kindest, most gentle and loving little girl. She is instantly a velcro girl attached to you. But she won't necessarily follow you around but once you sit down, she comes and finds you. She went outside right away and did her business. She loved running and playing in the grass. But once she was called, she ran right back inside and found her lap to warm. Charlotte gets along well with other dogs. She's submissive so she won't cause any problems. The minute another dog growls or challenges her, she turns and goes the other way. She currently lives with big and little dogs. Charlotte also lives with cats. She doesn't care about the cats. If Charlotte is given her choice, she'd like to sleep with her people. She curls up and likes to be touching her people but her foster mom likes a little more room so she moves to the end of the bed. Charlotte is a wonderful option for someone who hasn't had a dog before or hasn't had one recently. She is a great option for people who want a loving dog. If there are children in the home they need to be over the age of 6. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Ollie is a 2 year old Spaniel mix who weighs 14.8lbs. He was a rescue from the shelter. He was listed as a stray. He gets along well with other dogs. He currently lives with big and little dogs. He is not a barker. He needs a home that goes slower with him and gives him a chance to adjust to all new things. He doesn't do well with change. So to be successful, he will need a home that at least initially is quieter, doesn't take him out in public to big crowds or where he has to interact with a lot of people at first. He needs that home that just let's him come in, settle down, get use to everyone and then slowly he can meet others. Ollie will not have a coat that continually grows. What he has now is pretty much all he ever has except in winter it may get a bit thicker. Ollie gets along with cats. He could join a home that has a kid. Ollie is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids they need to be teenagers. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue Eggo is a 2 year old MaltiPoo who weighs about 10lbs. He was rescued from the what is called the city shelter in Korea. Many dogs are sold to the meat market from here or euthanized. Our friends in Korea always keep tabs on dogs here and try to rescue as many as they can and Eggo was one of them. He has a non-shedding coat that is an option for those who have allergies or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. However, he will require grooming. In many ways Eggo is like a spoiled toddler. He likes things his way and he needs someone who won't give into him but instead will have rules. He doesn't instantly bond. It takes time. The first few days can be rough and he really should just be ignored and allowed to figure out what's going on---more time spent in containment (either xpen or crate) and taken for long walks to get out his energy. He will need that strong owner who sets boundaries and has limits with him but isn't the type of owner who gives up and throws in the towel. He's most likely never going to be that dog who is friendly with everyone. He grows to love his people but he's not all about strangers. If you're a home that isn't willing to put him away when others come over, then he's not a great option. Eggo has lived with other dogs. The dog he has done best with is a really laid back dog who doesn't have dominant tendencies and doesn't mind if he acts large and in charge. He doesn't do well with those dogs who challenge him. He may be small but he is mighty. He's an ideal candidate to be someone's one and only dog. Eggo is not an option for kids. Eggo needs an experienced owner. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Once you are his, you're his. He was initially observant of his foster Dad. He wasn't sure what to make of him. But within 24 hours they were attached at the hip and that's all she wrote...He so much wants to please. He wants to you to love him as much as he loves you. Tobias wants to play with his foster siblings so much. They're more laid back and not so much into playing. So he has to visit the dog park and friends house to get his "play on". He gets along well with others. He currently lives with big and small dogs. He seems to get along with everyone he has met so far. Tobias lives with a cat. They get along well. He doesn't try to play with the cat. The cat says he can stay. Tobias is an option for a home that has had a dog and has a basic understanding of dog behavior. He's shy initially with strangers and just needs folks to give him a few moments to get to know everyone. With his people that he knows he's a velcro, loving, ride or die kind of pooch. He goes on walks with his foster mom. He is an option for living in a condo or an apartment. Kahlua's foster mom (10/4/17) stated: Kahlua is the easiest dog I have ever fostered. He is housetrained. He is quiet. He only barks when necessary. He is fine with me coming and going. He could stay for long periods of time by himself or he could be with his people nonstop. He isn't needy but he loves affection when you give it. Kahlua loves water! If the sprinkler or the water hose is on, then he's out there jumping in it and playing in the water. He loves to tip over the buckets outside for the horses and play in it like he's a Labrador Retriever or something! Kahlua gets along well with other dogs. He came in with another dog and has always lived with other dogs. However, he's also good by himself. He often goes to work with Foster Mom who has a dog friendly office. He loves to hang out in his bed, playing with his toys or sitting under her desk as she types away. Kahlua is not a nuisance barker and he doesn't require extensive exercise. He could be an option for living in an apartment or condo setting. Kahlua could be an option to go to doggy day camp or the dog park or to the beach. It was 110 degrees outside when he wandered up to the rescuer's home, ready to pass out, and stood patiently outside her gate. She brought him inside and called DPS. The adults in his foster home are not usually huge fans of BIG dogs (this guy weighs 80 lbs!) but he's such a gentle soul that he charmed them right from the start. Papa John is fostered with dogs, both big and small, and cats- and amazingly, he gets along with ALL of them! He is just such a love. He's a hang-out kind of guy who likes to follow his foster dad around while he does chores in the yard or the house. His foster dad says he has a shepherd-like personality, on the mellow side. Papa John knows how to use a doggy door and he is not a nuisance barker. He pulls a bit on leash at first, but as soon as you show him who's boss he will fall in line. Michael Phelps is a 6 year old Cockapoo mix who is in the search for gold--A gold medal type of home that is.... He has a non-shedding coat that is an option for those who have allergies and/or simply want a dog who doesn't shed. With his hair now, he's a wash and wear type of guy. No long hours in front of the mirror until his hair grows out. Then the groomer will be his friend. Michael was left behind in a home when a family moved and a realtor who then who was selling the house found him. It's the only time he's been left in someone's wake, that's for sure...He's a friendly guy. He loves people but he also values his space. He's not one who wants to be smothered all the time. He likes attention and affection but also appreciates just hanging out. Don't worry he won't require you to show your Olympic credentials before he gives you a big ol' kiss. After being in his foster home, he officially does not like being left outside! Who would blame him! He's ready to make a splash and win you over. Are you the home for him? Michael could easily join a "team" of other canine friends in his new home. Need a fourth to make that relay? Well, look no more. More like the solo route? Well, Michael knows a bit about winning the individual gold too...So whether you have dogs or don't, he's an option. Because he likes to guard his food he will need a home with kids over the age of 13. He's going to be more of an adults dog. He will also require a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). We will be doing adoptions on Saturday, Oct. 7th and Sunday, Oct. 8th from 12-4pm at Palo Alto Pet Food Express. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express from 12-4pm on Sat. Oct 7th & Sun. Oct 8th or until adopted. If interested, please fill out an application if you would like the first opportunity to meet prior to the start of the event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Spice is a 1 1/2 year old Dachshund mix who weighs 15.20lbs. Spice loves other dogs. She takes her lead from another dog. We have watched her blossom with other confident dogs. She is a great option to add as a second dog if there is already an established dog. She won't upset the "apple cart" but rather she'll settle right in and follow after the other dog. If she is the only dog, she'll be on the shy side but she'll attach to her people immediately and love them. Spice is a quiet girl. She's not a barker like some Doxies can be. She is an option to live in an apartment or condo setting. She learned how to walk on a leash in her foster home. She is shy initially but then once she knows her people she is very cuddly, snuggly and very sweet. She has a gentle and mellow temperament. She gets along very well with other dogs. She will follow them around but hasn't learned how to play yet. She lives with big and small dogs. She likes everyone. She is crated at night. She also eats in her crate. She will run and hang out in the corner or if her crate is open she'll go in there if it gets crazy in her foster home. There are lots of teens in and out. So sometimes it's a bit too much for her so she'll go hide. When she first runs in from outside she runs to hide and then when everyone sits down on the couch, then she comes and gently sits under her foster mom's legs until she picks her up. Spice is an option for kids who are over the age of 10 and have lived with dogs.

(We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Mia is a 1 1/2 year old Dachshund mix. She weighs 12.8lbs. She was an owner surrender at the shelter. They said they didn't have time for her. Well, we have time for her. Mia is a quieter, shy dog who likes a calmer type of environment. She doesn't do well in the frenetic activity of a busy household with kids and everyone. Rather she is a dog who likes it quiet, mellow, sit on your lap and just hang out. She's a lover girl with her people. You have to earn her love. Give her time to adjust and acclimate. Give her some space. You'll be amazed how quickly she is begging for your love and affection. Mia is definitely a lap dog when she knows you. Mia is not a nuisance barker. She could live in an apartment or condo setting. She could hang out in a quiet office. She is crate trained. She walks well on a leash and she enjoys going on walks but won't require extensive exercise. She has lived with dogs and does well with them. She has lived with big and little ones. She has lived with a cat and does well with them. Mia is only an option for someone who has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids they need to be teenagers or very quiet kids. No small children. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. (We will pre-approve one home to meet per dog.) Ruby Rose is a 1 year old Miniature Pinscher mix. She is a sweet, gentle, kind gal. She bonds closely with women and then adapts to the men. She gets along well with other dogs. She has always lived with dogs big and little. She is more passive, get along with everyone type. She also has recently been in a foster by herself and did well. She is a dog who is quiet enough, mellow enough that she could go to work with Mom or Dad and hang out in their office. Ruby is a dog who could live in an apartment or condo setting. She doesn't require extensive exercise. Rather she is a dog who could easily be content with walks and playing in the yard. She is not the go-go-go type that sometimes is a thought when picturing the breed. She clearly has something much more mellow inside of her. Ruby has lived with cats. She ignored them. She wasn't too excited about anything except maybe her foster mom wants she fell in love with her. Ruby is an option for a home with kids over the age of 8. She may be an option for a home that hasn't had recent experience. It will depend on lifetime experience and knowledge as well as a thorough application. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
