Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, February 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, February 19th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Zeppelin and Zelda were found wandering the streets of a neighborhood where neighbors were feeding them but no one was taking care of them. A nice home finally took them in and began the search for their previous home. No one claimed them and our rescue was contacted. Zeppelin is super friendly. He is happy go lucky friendly. He meets and greets and is ready to meet new friends no matter who they are. He makes friends with 2 legged as well as 4 legged. He came to his foster home and waltzed in and was like, "Hi, I'm home." He met the foster dogs and he was instantly friends with them. Zeppelin is an option for going to a home that has a cat. He currently lives with cats. Zeppelin is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. He is an option for kids over the age of 6. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She's a dog who melts in your arms once you pick her up. But she's not likely to be one that runs and jumps and declares her love for you initially. Bagherra though a puppy is wise beyond her age...She watches everyone and takes all the information in. But once you're hers, you are all hers! She would be a great one to go with a home that has a confident dog and owner. She needs someone that helps build her up. Bagherra is an option to live with dogs as she is currently fostered with dogs and came into the rescue having always lived with dogs. Bagherra currently lives with cats. She is an option to go to a home that has cats as long as they don't pick on her! Bagherra is not a barker. She's a quiet girl. She could live in an apartment or condo setting. When he first came into the rescue he was this quiet, shy, reserved little guy who kind of watched things from the sidelines. Boy have things changed! He's full of life and full of fun. He is a happy little dude who gets along with everyone. He was an instant hit at the vet's office and within a week at his foster home he had everyone wrapped around his little paw. Falcon is a total lap dog. Once he knows and loves you he's on your lap and well, that's where he plans to stay...He weighs under 10lbs so easily could fit under the seat if traveling with his new mom or dad. (We would advise the traveling not happen until he is 100% comfortable with his new people). He's definitely the kind of dog who would sit in his carrier and never make a peep. He is also a great size for an apartment or condo setting. Falcon gets along well with other dogs. He currently lives with big and little dogs and spends his day between playing full blast and snoring away sleeping... Falcon lives with cats and is just fine with them. He is an option to join a home that has dog friendly cats. He would be an option to live with kids over the age of 10. He runs, plays, jumps and hops with the best of them. He gets along with all the humans that he has met and loved and he gets along with all the canines he has met too. He lives with dogs now and he has nothing but friends! Skippy has a fabulous personality. He is an ideal dog for just about any type of home. From someone who has never had a dog and needs an easier dog with a great temperament to the person who has had dogs all their lives and doesn't need a dog with a lot of challenges. Skippy is an option to go to work with his new mom or dad. He's a great option for living in an apartment or condo setting. He's an option to go to doggy day care or the dog park. He just is so versatile and will be a great match for city living or country life. Skippy could be an option for kids of many ages. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Chaplin is a 4 year old JRT mix. He came in with another dog and was the less confident of the two. He currently lives with other dogs. He gets along great with other dogs. He is not crazy about being picked up initially. It will take some time for him to adjust to being picked up. He needs a home that is experienced and will earn his trust so he isn't scared when he's picked up. Ideally if his new human was willing to leave a leash on him to drag around then he doesn't need to be picked up until he's completely comfortable with his people. Chaplin is not a barker. He is an option for those who live in an apartment or condo setting. He is a dog who could go to doggy day care or to the dog park. Chaplin is an option for an experienced home who has had a dog in the last 3 years. He's tentative. He is an option for a home that has kids over the age of 13.

Recently due to family issues she was headed for the shelter and a friend of the rescue intercepted her. She's great with other dogs. She's not an instigator. She's not a dog who creates issues. She has always lived with other dogs. She is an option for the dog park or doggy day camp. She has met a variety of dogs and has done well with everyone. Roxy is a lover girl. She's still active and energetic and fun loving but she can also settle down. Even when groups of children were yelling and screaming and in general creating chaos she didn't seem to be bothered. Roxy is not a barker. She is a dog who meets people and is instantly friendly. She'll lick you to death, so watch out! She is a beautiful German Shepherd with all of the Shepherd traits that people fall in love with...She can do the hikes, the biking, the walking, the dog park but the great thing is she doesn't have to do it every day. So if you're someone who wants a dog who doesn't require daily marathons but on the weekends you'd still like to go on a long hike or run on the beach or head to Crissy Field, she's your girl. If there are kids in the home, they need to be over the age of 6. She is potentially an option for someone who hasn't had a dog recently but demonstrates on the application that they are prepared for a large breed dog. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. He's a pretty shy guy initially, but once he adopts you as his person, he's quite a love! He likes to be a part of everything going on around him. Robin is a big fan of toys, especially ones that squeak, and he does a very cute pounce when he attacks them. He's a great snuggler and loves belly rubs. He loves to tunnel under the blankets and snuggle next to his foster mom. Robin walks well on a leash and sleeps through the night in his crate. He's very food-motivated and he's a good listener. Robin will be a perfect fit for a patient family who gives him time to warm up. A bit of patience will be greatly rewarded with lots of love! Robin is an option to go to a home with another dog. He has lived with dogs previously and he's an option to go to the dog park, doggy day camp or even to a dog friendly office. Robin is an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 5 years. If there are children in the home, they need to be over the age of 8. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
