Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Our rescue will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express Saturday, February 18th from 1-4pm and Sunday, February 19th from 12-3pm. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue ***We will refund the adoption fee up to $400 if new home does training with our recommended trainer. A great dog and a great trainer all in one!**** Priscilla is a 3 year old Shepherd-Basenji mix. She's healthy (meaning not lacking for meals!) and weighs about 55lbs. She is friendly and outgoing almost immediately with females but a little more cautious with males. She will take a bit more time to be won over by the males in the home. Not that this is anything new with so many dogs...Priscilla has lived with other dogs. She has lived with kids. She won't immediately be a great option for younger kids. She's going to feel disoriented and scared but eventually she will come around so she's an option for kids 10+ now. Priscilla is not a barker. She was primarily an outdoor dog prior to coming into our rescue. But now she is in a foster home, has a doggy door, comes and goes and is loving life inside the home. She is a completely different dog in just a few short days. She was anxious at first and now she is calm and loves sleeping on the big plush bed in her foster home. She sleeps in a crate at night. In fact, she has always slept in a crate. Priscilla will be a great option for those who want a hiking, biking or running buddy. She could go to the dog park. She could be an option for doggy day care. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Maya is a 10-12 month old purebred Siberian Husky who was a rescue from the shelter. We don't know her story before the shelter but we know that her future is bright! She is a friendly, energetic, lively girl who is full of mischief and fun. She loves to play. She currently lives with other dogs and she can out play all of them. She is a Husky lovers dream. She is an option to go to doggy day camp or the dog park. She will definitely need a home that knows and loves the breed. They are high energy and full of themselves. Maya has a perfect temperament and she absolutely has zero manners. She has no idea that she's not suppose to jump on people and she pulls on a leash--like a sled dog! But these are all things that are taught but you can't change a temperament. Maya is a lover girl. She wants to smother her people with kisses and lots of love. Maya has been introduce to the cat and...she actually didn't try to eat him or to chase him. Now we're going to tell you that any self respecting Husky at some point is going to want to play chase. Why? Because. So if there is a home with cats, they must be very dog savvy. They can't be shy or skittish or fearful in any way. Asking any Husky to ignore that behavior and not think it's an incentive to chase may be asking a Husky to be something he/she isn't! Maya is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they must be over the age of 8. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She is a tiny little girl. She is definitely one who could travel by air or otherwise. She would easily fit under the seat. She is a friendly little girl. She's not the normal snappy, yappy Chi's that sometimes you see. Rather she's a lover girl. She's a cuddler and a snuggler. She's full of life and full of love. She's quite the little character and keeps her foster family in stitches. Patty Melt is good with other dogs. She currently lives in her foster home with other dogs. She also lives with a cat. She gets along well with the cat in her foster home but of course she is also half the size of the cat...that always helps. Patty knows how to use potty pads. If Patty's new home has kids they need to be over the age of 7 due to her small size. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. His leg was broken upon entry at the shelter and it was decided that amputation was the best course of action. Skippy acts as if he has never had a fourth leg ever. He runs, plays, jumps and hops with the best of them. He gets along with all the humans that he has met and loved and he gets along with all the canines he has met too. He lives with dogs now and he has nothing but friends! Skippy has a fabulous personality. He is an ideal dog for just about any type of home. From someone who has never had a dog and needs an easier dog with a great temperament to the person who has had dogs all their lives and doesn't need a dog with a lot of challenges. Skippy is an option to go to work with his new mom or dad. He's a great option for living in an apartment or condo setting. He's an option to go to doggy day care or the dog park. He just is so versatile and will be a great match for city living or country life. Skippy is an option to live with a cat. He currently lives with cats. He doesn't care about them. Of course they don't care about him either so that helps! Skippy could be an option for kids of many ages. We would consider younger kids if there has been experience with dogs by parents in the home. He is also an option for a home with cats! **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She's approx. 35lbs. We expect she will be in the 50lbs range when full grown. She's at a goofy, awkward stage right now as she gains weight. She lopes around and is funny with those big feet that don't seem to match her smaller body. You may notice a thin, faint line around her snout. Shelter staff believe she had a "gentle leader" on that was too tight and never taken off, despite the fact that she's had no issues with pulling on leash. She is a little timid when in public and tends to back away from strangers but once she gets used to you she's like a whole new dog. She does great playing with other dogs both in the home and at the dog park and could definitely benefit from a canine friend in her new home to help build her confidence and burn off some of that puppy energy! Skylar lives with a dog savvy cat and does well. Skylar has not shown aggression in her foster home. She is an option to live with a dog savvy cat. Skylar is an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they need to be over the age of 6. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. The Crayon Litter is 13 weeks old. Their mom is Crayola. She weighs about 60lbs. She is a English Pointer mix. We were called when the puppies were about a week old and asked if we could take in Mom and her 10 puppies. There are 6 boys and 4 girls. They are all going to be big dogs. So, not to speak ill of mom but well, she probably had more than one boyfriend. It appears there was more than one Dad in this litter...We have no idea what breed(s) Dad(s) were...Some look a little like hounds. One even looks Dalmation. We have the Target dog lookalike too! This is truly a litter that is "mixed". Mom is very sweet. She was initially protective of her litter which we always expect but even from the beginning she allowed her foster family to take care of her and the puppies. She was so skinny when she came in and we have successfully put weight on her even as she took fabulous care of her puppies. Her puppies are well adjusted and social little pups. They love to play with toys. They love to drag them all over. They love to make a mess X 10! They know how to use the doggy door. These puppies are going to be amazing pets for families who want big dogs. They will be walking, running, hiking and biking kind of pups. They will be ones who can go to the dog park or doggy day camp. They will gladly join a home that has another dog that is well behaved so they can model their behavior after them--much like they have Mom and the dogs in the foster home. The puppies have lived with cats so they are cat friendly. If there are children in the home they need to be over the age of 7. We will only consider a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. We will gladly consider all very thorough applications that demonstrate a commitment to training, an understanding of dog behavior and who put the time and energy into demonstrating their dog knowledge. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. She has been separated from them for a few weeks and now is ready to find her own new home. She has done well with other dogs in her foster home. She plays with them and lives with them. She tends to do well with women (humans) pretty much right off but is less receptive to men. Now, she's fostered by a man and she loves him. But it took him about 1-2 weeks to win her over. Expect that she may need to learn to love the guys in the home and they will have to be patient. In general if the female hands her to the male human and if he goes very slowly she will be fine. Ivy is not a nuisance barker. But she has no issue sounding the alarm, "Stranger Danger" if someone new comes over or is at the door or at the gate as is the case for her foster home. But as soon as she sees everything is ok, she goes back to her business. Ivy is very affectionate and loving when she is confident with her people. She is standoffish and protective if she does not know someone. She is not an ideal dog to have strangers rush up to or if a home has a constant stream of visitors coming and going. She is an ideal dog for a quieter home, that wants a very loyal, affectionate, loving dog who will be with you 24/7 or hang out when you're not home. Ivy does well with cats. She lives with a dog savvy cat and she is fine with him. Ivy will require a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are kids in the home they should be over the age of 10 and have vast dog experience. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Their landlord informed them that they could only keep one dog and Henry and Charlie had to find new homes. They were turned into our rescue. Charlie is shy initially upon meeting people. He has been well loved in his home but he hasn't been out and about meeting strangers. Rather he has met folks who come to his home but that's about it. Now, he's meeting new people. He's learning to trust new folks. He was won over in about an hour with pieces of a hot dog. Yep. Hot dog. So if you're trying to win him over, bring hot dogs. Charlie gets along with other dogs. It would be ideal if there was a confident dog in his new home. He will instantly follow after that dog. But if there isn't another dog in the home then the family will have to continue to work harder to introduce him to new people and to build his confidence. Charlie can live with either small or large breed dogs. He's very friendly with them all. Charlie is an option for kids who are over the age of 10. We will look for folks who have done their research and preparation to welcome a new dog. If a home has not had a dog in the last 3 years they will have to sign up to work with our trainer.

She's friendly and outgoing. She's a lover girl. She's a total snuggler and cuddler. She wants to be on your lap or sitting next to you or hanging out in your office. She's totally happy to be with her people. Now she's not anxious but she loves her people. If you're looking for a velcro type of dog then she's the one for you. She is going to make an awesome office dog or a dog who can run errands with her person. Smurfette is a small little compact girl. She looks like a little tank. She's so cute. Smurfette lives with other dogs. She is an option to go to the dog park or doggy day camp or even to join another dog in her home. Smurfette lives with cats. She's a quiet, mellow girl who is looking for that special home that will help her blossom. She is painfully shy with strangers and needs a confident owner and in an ideal world, a confident canine sibling waiting to meet her! Ferrari came into the rescue with her sister Porsche. We sent them to separate homes as we are not looking to place them together. They need an opportunity to blossom and that won't happen with the two of them together. Ferrari is a sweet girl. She took about a week in her foster home to start to come out of her shell. We're seeing new things every day. We expect she'll probably need the same time span in a new foster home. Ferrari gets along well with other dogs and finds her confidence with them. Ferrari is an option to go to a home with a cat as well. She currently lives with a cat in her foster home. Ferrari is only an option to go to a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. If there are children they need to be over the age of 10. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Knight is a 4 year old Miniature Schnauzer-Poodle mix who weighs about 20-25lbs. He has a non-shedding coat but may not necessarily be one that is an option for those who have allergies. His coat is slightly wire but also curly like a Poodle. Knight is one of the best dogs we have had in the rescue in a long time. He has the best personality. He gets along well with others. He loves people. He instantly is a meeter and a greeter type of dog. He could go to work with Mom or Dad. He could live in an apartment or condo setting. He is an all around great type of dog. If we've ever had a dog who had the possibility of being a therapy dog, it's a dog like this that has his kind of personality. Knight loves other dogs. He gets along with everyone he has met so far. He plays with big dogs and he plays with little dogs. He is just a dog who can walk into any setting where dogs are welcome and he will fit right in. He could easily go to the dog park or doggy day camp. He could join a canine sibling or two at his new home. He could easily live by himself and be someone's one and only. Knight lives with a cat and gets along well with dog savvy cats. Knight is not a barker. He is crate trained. He knows how to use the doggy door. He was a rescue from the shelter. We don't know his story previously. But we know that some lucky family is going to get an amazing dog. Knight could be an option for a home that hasn't had a dog before. If there are children in the home they do need to be over the age of 6. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event.
