If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Cairn Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Arlington, TX
Posted Breed: Cairn Terrier / Schnauzer / Mixed. I'm 14 pounds and about 8 months now, and probably won't grow much more, but I'm giving it my best shot! I love sitting in laps. Well, maybe not exactly sitting. More like bouncing. I think it's funny to nip at a chin, and you can imagine what I nip at if you turn your back on me! HAHA! All in fun. I have a HUGE sense of humor! Sunshine on a cloudy day is what I am ! But I know how to settle down too, and I'm learning how to channel surf ! Toys! Yes, toys! I live with bigger dogs. Foster mom says I'm giving their lazy bones a workout, but I also cuddle with them. I love the rope toys that we can tug on. Stuffed kongs and the TV remote are for my chillin' time. No restrictions on TV time, as long as I don't get a beer belly. I'm allowed on the furniture 'cause I don't seem to shed, and I'm good about getting my paws wiped after coming in from the rain. I'm good in a crate. And I make a fuss when I need to go potty. That'a apparently a BIG deal for a little pup like me. I'd probably chase cats, but just to play. Please contact my foster mom if you think you can give me a great forever home. --------------------------- The adoption fee includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm test (dogs over 6 months), spay/neuter, and microchip including registration. If you are interested please complete our online application at www.shelter2rescue.org If you have questions you can contact his foster: LyndaDFW at gmail.com

      Age: Adult
      Location: Arlington, TX
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). Please contact Liz (elizabethjeffcoat@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. Handsome Rex is just 2 years old. He was adopted as a pup from the Keene animal shelter. He appeared to have been passed along through a couple of owners, and finally ended up at another shelter, before being returned to Keene shelter. The power of having a microchip, may have saved his life, but he is still needing a forever home. Rex is a beautiful boy in personality and in color. He is grey/fawn color with a bit of white on his chest. He is smart and wants to please. You ask him to sit and he sits so proud and smart for you. He loves to play and enjoy a good time with you. He would be great as the only companion, but depending on the other dog he might be fine. If you are interested in adopting Rex please contact Liz at 214 616 6128. He is a courtesy post for Keene animal shelter, who strive to help the dogs find good homes.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male

      Location: Arlington, TX
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jack, a gorgeous Labrador/Shepherd mix. Jack is a smart boy, listens well to his commands. He does get along with several dogs that he is fostered with. No cats please! He is unsure of small children, probably only because he isn't used to them (they move fast and make lots of noise). He would do best in a home with adults, or teenage kids in the home. Jack is crate trained and also house trained. He loves to play with people and other dogs. Jack is amazingly smart and well trained. His adoption includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm test (dogs over 6 months), neuter, and microchip including registration. Breed: Italian Greyhuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Arlington, TX
Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Chihuahua / Mixed. Don’t let Marsh’s shyness fool you; he is an active, happy little dog that will thrive once he gets to know you and you get to know him. He is 2 years old, weighing about 10lbs. He adores other dogs and must be placed in a home with an active dog or two. Once he’s finished playing he wants nothing more than to sit close to you so you can give him a scratch or a pat. He needs a home that can provide him with a regular schedule since he is still young; think of him as a 5-year-old boy that might need to be reminded to do his chores on occasion. He is crate trained and goes into his crate at night or when his foster parents need to leave the house. He loves squishy dog beds and lots of doggy blankets to cover up with at night, and he will cover himself up when it’s time to go to sleep. He loves to play with toys and his foster brothers; often crying for his foster brothers if he is separated from them for too long, so please consider him if you have an active dog at home that needs someone to play with. Marsh wants nothing more than to be loved forever by a family he can call his own. He is a bright light that has shined a bit of sunshine in his foster family’s home. His adoption includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, neuter, and microchip including registration. . rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Arlington, TX
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever. Gershon was recently rescued from Cleburne animal shelter, Cleburne Tx. He is such a great boy. He is a Labrador but with a twist. He looks like a lab but he has the most unusual black/brown coloring. Like flecks of color throughout his body. You might think he looks like he has mud on him in his photos, but he is clean! It's just his fur. Gershon would be your typical Labrador, one that love's to be active and is playful. He gets along well with most of the dogs he has met in his foster home. He really is a social boy and generall loves life! He loves people, and really enjoys interacting with them. Gershon is crated when his foster mom is away from home. This ensures his safety and also keeps him from getting into something he shouldn't. After all how would he know otherwise? If you are looking for a great adventure and many years of fun with a great pal, we think he is one dog you should consider. The adoption includes age appropriate vaccinations, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm test (neg), neuter, and microchip including registration. If you are interested in me, fill out out an application at www.shelter2rescue.org. Call or text my foster mom Liz at 214-616-6128 if you want to find out more about me and what I require in my new home

Please contact Liz (elizabethjeffcoat@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. ***Come visit me on APRIL 22 (This Saturday!) from 11:30-2:30 pm PETCO 4001 W Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, TX *** Holly is an out going girl. She is eager to join in and play with other dogs, or play with people. She is an Australian Cattledog/Hound mix, and maybe something else too. She is estimated to be 1 1/2 years old. Beautiful stunning girl. Her eyes are an ice blue color, and yes she can see very well. She is sharp as a whip too. She sits for a treat, and she looks to smart when she does. Holly is crate trained. She would do well in a home with children who would like to play with her.(bigger/older kids, as she is playful). We think she would also be great as a running or just walking buddy. She would love a home that has a yard she can get to play around in and enjoy times with her family. Holly loves to snuggle up in doors when its time to rest or its night time. Whether she has her very own dog bed, or she gets to snuggle with you, she won't mind either. Holly would not be an apartment dog. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Olive! She is a Pit Bull/Bull Terrier mix. At only 45lbs, this pretty and petite little gal is the perfect size! Olive is an energetic and fun girl who has the personality of a puppy dog, cuddly and sweet but loves to play! She loves meeting new people and is very friendly with children and adults alike! Olive is house broken and does not have accidents, she is accustomed and well adjusted to being crated, and she knows several commands (continued training would be a great way for her to bond with her new owners)! She is bubbly, always happy and ready for adventure, and she is as sweet as can be! Olive would do best in a home where she could have a doggy companion, daily walks and exercise, and lots of cuddles and love! She gets along excellent with dogs her size or larger; however, a home with small dogs or cats would not be ideal for her.
