Posted Breed: Boxer / Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (short coat). ADOPTION FEE WAIVED! Rosie is about 3 1/2 years old and an American Bully mix. She came to us emaciated, unable to walk, with her newborn puppies. Since coming into her foster home, she has blossomed into a wonderful girl. She is almost completely potty trained, she knows basic commands and corrects well, loves to snuggle and just wants to be near her person all day every day. She would do best in a home with submissive dogs and possible small dogs as she tends to correct behaviors she does not feel are appropriate. She may be ok with dog savvy cats as well. Rosie is be spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her vaccines. You can find out more about our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Hank came to us January 30th, 2016 from CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES . He had lived his life as a guard dog and then his owner died. He went to the shelter which is super scary, because even though he was responsible for protecting his previous owner, Hank is blind. He is pretty lazy and laid back, he sometimes looks intense (I think it is because he is blind and trying to figure eve rything out). He sees to see lights and shadows and gets around pretty well! He loves adults and kids and wants to snuggle all the time (except when he does zoomies in the back yard with his foster dad every day), but not a big fan of other dogs. They tend to scare him, and he can be annoying with cats so I would say only a home with dog-savvy cats. He is about 7 years old and hoping to find an awesome retirement home. I know, blind, black and bully - the trifecta of difficult dogs to place, but we hope you will share and help us find him a home! ADOPTION FEE WAIVED! He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and ready for a home of his own! Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento - Dorothy Zbornak is one of our senior Akita girls. We think she is approximately 8 years old. She came to use with her sister, Blanche Debereaux from our friends at Placer County Paws. Dorothy is very confident and can tend to be the more dominate one with other dogs. She loves being an indoor dog and is potty trained, has good manners, isn't destructive and knows basic commands. She enjoys a nice pet and will give you kisses, but what she wants most of all is just a nice calm house to live out the rest of their days with tons of treats and petting. She is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. If you are interested in providing this senior girl a loving home, you can find out about our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Sacramento- Bentley is a super cute 8 year old Jack Russell terrier mix. She is super cute and sweet and a bit sensitive (like flies will scare her until she trembles). But other than that, she is pretty amazing. I am not the biggest JRT fan, because of their energy, but an 8 year old has the perfect amount of energy. She still love to play with other dogs, but she is also a good snuggler as well. She is good with dogs, cats and kids, and is ready for a home of her own. She has been a beloved companion, but after a divorce, her mom could no longer find a home where she could have her dogs, so I promised to find both the one adopted from RPNC and this girl a great home. So please share this girl, so we can find her the perfect forever home. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and ready for adoption. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Border Collie / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Trudy Proud came to us an emaciated mess missing half of her hair. But even being in not a great condition, she has been amazing from the get go. She is about 40 pounds and maybe a year and a half old. I love her seal colored hair and she loves dogs big and small. Her favorite thing is playing fetch and chewing on antlers. She is a playful girl, but not annoyingly so. She has done great with crate training, we are still working on the house training- but she will definitely tell me when she has to go to the bathroom (she will jump on the doors). I am not sure how she would be with cats, she definitely wants to eat my chickens, but slow introductions may be fine. She is not great on a leash- so we need to work on that one. Overall, she is pretty easy and is just going to get better with continued structure and boundaries. As likely a dog who has spent her life outside, she definitely loves being a part of a family. We are still waiting a couple more weeks to get more weight on her, and for her boobs to shrink, before spaying her, but she will be ready to go home in time for the holidays. She will be spayed on 12/13, she has been dewormed, microchipped and will be UTD on vaccines. If you are interested in adopting her, you can find our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/ Adoption fee: $200

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 150.00. Sacramento- Meet Shadow, this beautiful 2 year old blue fawn brindle boy came to us from CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES thanks to UC Davis Fracture Program for Rescue Animals. Shadow ended up at the shelter with a broken foot and leg. The awesome students at UCD took him in and fostered him and Dr. V reached out to us (in the same week that our bully foster Ginny had dogs adopted), so it was meant to be. Shadow is not just beautiful but he is super sweet. He is crate trained, loves to play with his ball (but doesn’t like dropping it – we are working on that!) and also loves to lounge on the couch. He knows sit, down, roll over and is learning bang bang! He lived with a small dog in his first foster home and has been introduced to a couple of dogs his size and has done well, though like with any dog, we recommend slow introductions. His leg was evaluated medically by the amazing vets at UCD and other than excess bone formation, due to his broken leg not being treated early on, there are no problems with this and he has been medically cleared. You can see the video they made for him at: https://youtu.be/BgUGGNZ05rQ He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and ready for a home of his own. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento - Poppy is one of our long-term fosters. She has been in her foster home for almost 2 years. She came to us from Yolo County Animal Services Shelter after she was left behind in a trailer and her people moved without taking her. She is approximately 4 years old now and a lean 50 lbs. Poppy is a happy, active, athletic girl. She loves to chase toys and do zoomies in the yard and leans into you for pets when she is done. Poppy prefers to be the only pet in the house though wouldn’t mind sharing her home with a lackadaisical, submissive male that will let her rule the house and not try to correct her. She is crate and house trained, spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. You can find our process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/ Adoption fee: $200

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Ladybird has to have the best staffy ears! She originally came to us as a puppy and was adopted by a family with 4 children. Unfortunately, when the family split up, she found herself without a place to go. She never was socialized with animals, so she is overly excited by them, so today was her first adoption event and she did really well. She loves people and kids, and is great with them but she would be best as an only animal or with a home where the family understands slow intros and understands training. She is about 4 years old, knows sit, down and half of a roll over and is house and crate trained. She is ready for a forever home of her own, so please share this cutie! She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccines. You can find our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/ Adoption Fee: $200

Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Jack (formerly known as Jingle) is a young and shy boy. He LOVES to play fetch and is really smart,He is about 20 pounds and was labelled as a border collie mix at Antioch Animal Services, but we think it is more likely he is a rat terrier! He is good with dogs, but mainly he just wants to fetch. He has lived with cats and children, but he will chase cats if they run. Fetch is his favorite thing in the world. He needs a day or two to adjust in a new home, so he would be best with kids 12 and older who will respect his space in those first few days. He mainly just wants to play! He is an active boy, so if you are looking for a running partner, he would be great for you. He has received training with Paws In Progress, so he knows many commands already. He is neutered, micrchipped, up to date on vaccines. You can find out more about our process and apply online at: http:// recycledpetsnorcal.org/ adoption-process/
