Posted Breed: Boxer / Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (short coat). ADOPTION FEE WAIVED! Rosie is about 3 1/2 years old and an American Bully mix. She came to us emaciated, unable to walk, with her newborn puppies. Since coming into her foster home, she has blossomed into a wonderful girl. She is almost completely potty trained, she knows basic commands and corrects well, loves to snuggle and just wants to be near her person all day every day. She would do best in a home with submissive dogs and possible small dogs as she tends to correct behaviors she does not feel are appropriate. She may be ok with dog savvy cats as well. Rosie is be spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her vaccines. You can find out more about our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 0.00. Sacramento- Macho is a cute 9 year old chihuahua who is ready for a family of his own. He may be older and toothless, but this guy has some spunk too. You can see, even at about 6 pounds, he can carry half his weight in squeaker dog toys! He is good with dogs, cats and people. He was adopted, but his human had serious medical issues unfortunately so he is back with us. We had bloodwork and dental done earlier this year as well. He is looking for a lap to hang out on- maybe a squeaker toy or two- and some love. If you are looking for a tiny companion, he might be the one! Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Tobias came to us from Placer County Paws. This little guy is so unique looking (his Mohawk will be dyed this weekend unless someone adopts him before he has a stripe), and he is a good boy. He got a lot of one on one training in the shelter and thrived, then he was adopted by a couple that was not a good fit so he was returned to the shelter and that is when he came to us. He lives i n a home with other dogs and is good with them, we were a little concerned with how he would act at the event and he was a rockstar. After taking over an hour to greet his foster mom on his first night, it was great to see him go up to strangers and be fine with everyone. I think he needs an owner who will continue to work on rules and boundaries. He needs someone who will make him feel safe, and part of that is giving him those boundaries so he does not feel like he has to be the protector and on the defensive. He has great body language to say that someone or something makes him nervous, and has done absolutely great in the last week he has been with us. He is approximately 5 years old and a terrier mix (maybe powder puff?). He is naturally pretty mellow but enjoys walks. He was likely very under socialized which is why he is so protective, but has blossomed and now is looking for a home of his own. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccines and is ready for adoption. Maverick

      rescue
Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Sacramento- Maverick has a sad story that reminds us just how unfair life can be for our companion animals. Maverick was brought to the shelter as a stray from Woodland back in August, and his owner never came for him. He passed the shelter's behavior evaluation with flying colors- he was social, tolerant of invasive handling, readily gave up access to food and treats, and was relaxed and friendly when meeting other dogs. Maverick was adopted by a family with kids ages 1, 6 , 8, and 17. The 6 year old child has special needs. Maverick was an inside dog and is house and crate trained. The family loved him very much, and said he was great with everyone, loved going to the dog park, and was so tolerant of the kids that they were training him to be a service dog. Last week, Maverick was having a bad day. We believe he had an ear infection (which has since been treated). The parents weren't home so the information we have is 2nd hand from the baby sitter. The 1 year old toddler, who according to the parents regularly sat on Maverick's back and face with no protest from Maverick, was doing something to him, and Maverick had enough and growled. The child continued whatever he was doing, and Maverick air-snapped. The baby sitter called the father, who immediately came home to get Maverick and bring him back to the shelter. Maverick is a good dog. He loves people, including kids, and other dogs. He was pushed a little too hard and said "no" in the only way he can, without hurting anyone. All dogs should be supervised with children, especially young children who often do not understand boundaries. Animals should be able to get away from toddlers who often inadvertently torment animals until they are old enough to understand those boundaries. Maverick is neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped and is ready for a home of his own. If you are interested in this sweet boy, you can find our adoption process online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/ Adoption fee: $100

      Margarita

      rescue
      Breed: Bulldog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Bulldog (short coat). Adoption Fee: 350.00. Sacramento- Margarita is a super cute puppy, but she is more than just a pretty face. This cute girl has spina bifida, and she is doing awesome but she is still special needs. She would say her needs involve lots of toys and play time, and boy does she love to play! Margarita gets around very well, she has learned to go up and down stairs (only a few at a time) and gets around pretty well, but s he is in incontinent. This means that she cannot hold her bowels or bladder. What does this mean? Well, depends on the person. You can find on Mickey the Bulldog and the Padded Bum Crew all about suggestions for diapers, diaper creams and all of that, and that is one option. I have been working on "bladder training" where I help her empty her bladder several times a day. Of course, as a small puppy, this is much easier than it will be when she grows up. She primarily poops in her sleep, I just know I will do a lot of laundry and to me that is easier than dealing with the diapers, but I have easy to clean floors. Any adopter we choose also has to be willing to participate in clinical trials that will be happening at UC Davis. This is including, but not limited to, MRIs, Gait Analysis, and possibly other studies. These studies not only benefit dogs, but potentially children as well, and so we are dedicated to help as much as we can! Margarita came from a great breeder, she has been well socialized and has an amazing temperament. But bulldogs can be stubborn and difficult, so any new guardian really needs to commit to rules, boundaries and structure. Understanding the breed is paramount, because while she is mildly affected by the spina bifida, she is 100% bulldog. This means she needs to be monitored in our hot Sacramento summers, and needs to eat good food. English Bulldogs are not the easiest, or cheapest, dogs out there, but they are cute and full of personality, and this girl has that in spades. She was born 2/28. We will start considering new guardians for her but we are not in a hurry to place her. I expect many applications for her, and we will absolutely be picky. Any adopter will be stuck with me for a long time, so I want to make sure she gets the best while we continue this road together. Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Sacramento- Oliver is an old man. The shelter said 8, I think they are not close and he is closer to 12. He is looking for a final home, a retirement home to spend his last few weeks, months, years in. He was rescued from Yolo County Animal Services Shelter, and had some small lumps and a bad tooth removed. He likes soft treats and eats canned food (h e apparently knows we are suckers). He lives with dogs, cats and a small child and he is pretty easy going. He is on a special senior diet for his kidneys. Oliver has been a great addition to his foster home and quickly showed his foster family that nothing can get him down. He has a very upbeat personality and is happy to "talk" to you throughout the day. He has shown to be great with large dogs and is doing good with cats. He is a little unsure of strange dogs on leash but is fine after proper intros. He is house trained and is crate trained (although he would rather be cuddling on the couch!). He seems to have bad hearing but can hear some things. This old guy hopes there is someone out there who thinks that #puppiesaredicks and can see how amazing adoption a senior dog is. Plus his ADOPTION FEE IS WAIVED! If you have a big heart, you can fill out our application online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Sacramento- Meet Shadow, this beautiful 2 year old blue fawn brindle boy came to us from CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES thanks to UC Davis Fracture Program for Rescue Animals. Shadow ended up at the shelter with a broken foot and leg. The awesome students at UCD took him in and fostered him and Dr. V reached out to us (in the same week that our bully foster Ginny had dogs adopted), so it was meant to be. Shadow is not just beautiful but he is super sweet. He house trained in a day and loves to lounge on the couch. We are told he is good with dogs, although, we have not tested him yet as we believe in slow intros. He has been evaluated medically by the amazing vets at UCD and other than excess bone formation, due to his broken leg not being treated early on, but there are no problems with this and he has been medically cleared. You can see the video they made for him at: https://youtu.be/BgUGGNZ05rQ He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and ready for a home of his own. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sacramento - Poppy came from Yolo County Animal Services Shelter and is approximately 3 years old and weighing 50 pounds. Poppy was left in someone's trailer i n a trailer park in rural Yolo Co., and her owner never came for her. Poppy is a happy, active, athletic girl. She loves to chase toys and do zoomies around the yard, and lean into you for pets when she's done. Every time I take her out of her kennel, she quickly does her business, then bounds joyfully around the yard, then comes sprinting back to me, asking me to play with bouncing play bows. She's pretty darn cute. Like most dogs in the shelter, Poppy was getting frustrated. She is not in a foster home with other dogs. We are evaluating her on her behaviors and will update as needed.
