Posted Breed: Boxer / Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (short coat). ADOPTION FEE WAIVED! Rosie is about 3 1/2 years old and an American Bully mix. She came to us emaciated, unable to walk, with her newborn puppies. Since coming into her foster home, she has blossomed into a wonderful girl. She is almost completely potty trained, she knows basic commands and corrects well, loves to snuggle and just wants to be near her person all day every day. She would do best in a home with submissive dogs and possible small dogs as she tends to correct behaviors she does not feel are appropriate. She may be ok with dog savvy cats as well. Rosie is be spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her vaccines. You can find out more about our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Deuce Littlealow - the 2 legged Chihuahua is about ready to find a home of his own. When he came to us 3 weeks ago, he was scrawny, underweight, and we were not sure how great he would do. He has doubled his weight, gotten so strong and is a super playful and happy puppy. He is 12 weeks old and over 2 pounds now, and looking for a special home. We are hopeful that (and working on trying to teach him to) he will learn to walk on his two back legs. For now, he hops and scoots himself around. Since he is still growing, he does not yet have a wheel chair, but that would be helpful as well. He has lived in a home with all sorts of dogs, he has little fear and wants to play a lot. He loves humans big and small as well - in all he has been well socialized. So while he loves snuggling and loves being with people, he will bite your nose in a heartbeat! Currently, he has a puppy pen when he is not hanging out with humans, and has done well with using the puppy pad for potty time. But since he pees on himself, he gets a fair amount of wipe downs and baths. He eats and drinks like normal and other than these missing legs, he is an average puppy. Playing, eating, drinking, sleeping, peeing, and pooping. We are looking for a foster to adopt (as he only has one testicle and he is too young and too small for the invasive surgery to dig around for the other tiny thing) until he is ready for a neuter. He has started his puppy vaccines and has been wormed as well. To apply to adopt this fun-loving boy, visit our website, recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Hank came to us January 30th, 2016 from CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES . He had lived his life as a guard dog and then his owner died. He went to the shelter which is super scary, because even though he was responsible for protecting his previous owner, Hank is blind. He is pretty lazy and laid back, he sometimes looks intense (I think it is because he is blind and trying to figure eve rything out). He sees to see lights and shadows and gets around pretty well! He loves adults and kids and wants to snuggle all the time (except when he does zoomies in the back yard with his foster dad every day), but not a big fan of other dogs. They tend to scare him, and he can be annoying with cats so I would say only a home with dog-savvy cats. He is about 7 years old and hoping to find an awesome retirement home. I know, blind, black and bully - the trifecta of difficult dogs to place, but we hope you will share and help us find him a home! ADOPTION FEE WAIVED! He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and ready for a home of his own! Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Ladybird has to have the best staffy ears! She originally came to us as a puppy and was adopted by a family with 4 children. Unfortunately, when the family split up, she found herself without a place to go. She never was socialized with animals, so she is overly excited by them, so today was her first adoption event and she did really well. She loves people and kids, and is great with them but she would be best as an only animal or with a home where the family understands slow intros and understands training. She is about 4 years old, knows sit, down and half of a roll over and is house and crate trained. She is ready for a forever home of her own, so please share this cutie! She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccines. You can find our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/ Adoption Fee: $200

Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento - Dorothy Zbornak is one of our senior Akita girls. We think she is approximately 8 years old. She came to use with her sister, Blanche Debereaux from our friends at Placer County Paws. Dorothy is very confident and can tend to be the more dominate one with other dogs. She loves being an indoor dog and is potty trained, has good manners, isn't destructive and knows basic commands. She enjoys a nice pet and will give you kisses, but what she wants most of all is just a nice calm house to live out the rest of their days with tons of treats and petting. She is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. If you are interested in providing this senior girl a loving home, you can find out about our adoption process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process.

Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Jack (formerly known as Jingle) is a young and shy boy. He LOVES to play fetch and is really smart,He is about 20 pounds and was labelled as a border collie mix at Antioch Animal Services, but we think it is more likely he is a rat terrier! He is good with dogs, but mainly he just wants to fetch. He has lived with cats and children, but he will chase cats if they run. Fetch is his favorite thing in the world. He needs a day or two to adjust in a new home, so he would be best with kids 12 and older who will respect his space in those first few days. He mainly just wants to play! He is an active boy, so if you are looking for a running partner, he would be great for you. He has received training with Paws In Progress, so he knows many commands already. He is neutered, micrchipped, up to date on vaccines. You can find out more about our process and apply online at: http:// recycledpetsnorcal.org/ adoption-process/

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Sacramento- Tobias came to us from Placer County Paws. This little guy is so unique looking (his Mohawk will be dyed this weekend unless someone adopts him before he has a stripe), and he is a good boy. He got a lot of one on one training in the shelter and thrived, then he was adopted by a couple that was not a good fit so he was returned to the shelter and that is when he came to us. He lives i n a home with other dogs and is good with them, we were a little concerned with how he would act at the event and he was a rockstar. After taking over an hour to greet his foster mom on his first night, it was great to see him go up to strangers and be fine with everyone. I think he needs an owner who will continue to work on rules and boundaries. He needs someone who will make him feel safe, and part of that is giving him those boundaries so he does not feel like he has to be the protector and on the defensive. He has great body language to say that someone or something makes him nervous, and has done absolutely great in the last week he has been with us. He is approximately 5 years old and a terrier mix (maybe powder puff?). He is naturally pretty mellow but enjoys walks. He was likely very under socialized which is why he is so protective, but has blossomed and now is looking for a home of his own. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccines and is ready for adoption. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Sacramento- Meet Shadow, this beautiful 2 year old blue fawn brindle boy came to us from CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES thanks to UC Davis Fracture Program for Rescue Animals. Shadow ended up at the shelter with a broken foot and leg. The awesome students at UCD took him in and fostered him and Dr. V reached out to us (in the same week that our bully foster Ginny had dogs adopted), so it was meant to be. Shadow is not just beautiful but he is super sweet. He house trained in a day and loves to lounge on the couch. We are told he is good with dogs, although, we have not tested him yet as we believe in slow intros. He has been evaluated medically by the amazing vets at UCD and other than excess bone formation, due to his broken leg not being treated early on, but there are no problems with this and he has been medically cleared. You can see the video they made for him at: https://youtu.be/BgUGGNZ05rQ He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and ready for a home of his own. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sacramento - Poppy came from Yolo County Animal Services Shelter and is approximately 3 years old and weighing 50 pounds. Poppy was left in someone's trailer i n a trailer park in rural Yolo Co., and her owner never came for her. Poppy is a happy, active, athletic girl. She loves to chase toys and do zoomies around the yard, and lean into you for pets when she's done. Every time I take her out of her kennel, she quickly does her business, then bounds joyfully around the yard, then comes sprinting back to me, asking me to play with bouncing play bows. She's pretty darn cute. Like most dogs in the shelter, Poppy was getting frustrated. She is not in a foster home with other dogs. We are evaluating her on her behaviors and will update as needed. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. You can find our process and apply online at: http://recycledpetsnorcal.org/adoption-process/ Adoption fee: $200
