Posted Breed: Terrier / Boxer / Mixed. Patti's Christmas wish......a home for the holidays! Patti has been perhaps our most overlooked dog this year. Patti has learned to walk nicely on a halti leash, goes potty mostly outside, (new transitions and routines may be throwing her off, but we think she spent the first year of her life tethered up outside somewhere) and her excitability around other animals turns out to be the biggest Joie de vive! She sees every new animal as somebody to play with! Most cats seem to find her wrestling highly offensive though. At adoption events she is the first knucklehead to roll over for a belly rub, or bowl you over to give kisses! We think she may be part American Bulldog, cause she is either really stubborn or really dense. She's had no issues sharing toys or deferring to other resident dogs. While she isn't looking for trouble, she is confident and won't take getting bullied. Her fosters can get her attention faster than their own dogs. While she likes food, she eats with the others without an issue. Kids are able to hug her and lay on her and she loves the doggy bed. She can be a bit of a bull in a china shop when she is excited, but she's lovely. Please help us find this girl the fur ever home she deserves for the holidays! If you are interested, please submit a non-binding application to meet her: http://kninerescue.rescuegroups.org/info/file?file=19787.pdf

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Tilley

      rescue
      Breed: Brittany-Great Pyrenees Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees / Brittany / Mixed. Tilley is an amazing girl. Despite her size (about 95lbs), she still has the energy of a puppy. While she is social in public and will play at the dog park with the best of them, she will need to be the only dog in the home. She adores children and meeting new people. Experience with larger dogs is preferred. She is crate trained and housebroken. She rides well in the car and walks well on a leash. She is very observant and always scanning the horizon when we spend time outside (just part of her breed). She will let us know if she sees something with a chirp or a bark, but not obsessively and we can call her out of it easily. With a little training and love, someone will be winning the jackpot by adopting her. You must submit a non-binding application to meet KRI dogs http://www.kninerescue.com/info/adoption

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Hound / Mixed. Violet was adopted in through us in March of 2014 at roughly 12 weeks old and was one of a litter of 9! Unfortunately due to some issues at home, Violet's family is no longer able to keep her. She is a mutt, mostly lab and probably some hound. She's UTD on all shots, spayed, and microchipped and about 45lbs. This smart girl has been through an obedience program with iCareK9; She is house/crate trained, and she knows heel, sit, wait (i.e. stay), no, come, down (i.e. lay down), rollover, shake, and is pretty good on a leash. She’s always done well at the dog park, and spent the first few months living with multiple dogs. She gets along well with men and women as well as children; she does chase cats & squirrels, though has never harmed the resident cat. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Princess Leia is looking for a FOREVER HOME. After a rough past, multiple litters, and almost getting hit on the streets of Baltimore last month, her fosters have been providing her with some much needed TLC. She was horribly emaciated, sick, and sad but has come such a long way! She's a very very sweet dog, that loves baths, head rubs and sweet talks AND ritz crackers, but she can still skittish and afraid of loud noises. Leia is approximately 2 years old and would be best suited for a family that has older children and a fenced in yard for her to run and play. Her fosters have been working on leash walking as that seems to be a new concept for her. She appears to get along well with other animals and is currently fostered with an older male. This is a courtesy crosspost. If you are interested in this sweet girl, you must submit a non-binding app to meet her http://kninerescue.rescuegroups.org/info/file?file=19787.pdf

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Olympia, is a special girl (approximately 8 years old) that was morbidly obese when she was found as a stray in Blacksburg, VA in August 2016. Sadly, no one ever reclaimed her. The doctors and staff at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, MD stepped up and have been fostering her since August 2016. Olympia has overcome unbelievable odds in the last 7 months and thankfully, is nearing her goal weight. Now, our determined girl desires nothing more than a forever home occupied by someone to whom she can give all her love. She has been on a strict diet and rehabilitation program and so far has lost about 55lbs and has only a few to go! After her spay and bilateral TPLO surgery to repair torn cruciates, she has become much more active and is a social butterfly who loves every person she meets! She does not adore other dogs or cats, but instead prefers to be the center of attention. She is incredibly silly and sweet! If you can appreciate a strong-willed dog (in the best way), currently have no other pets, Olympia would LOVE for you to be her ‘person’. She is looking forward to being spoiled, hand fed her favorite vegetables, and snoozing at your side. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Olympia and have questions see our front desk for more information or email us at olympiavcavra@gmail.com

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel. Larry, a beautiful blue-eyed purebred Cocker Spaniel, would do best in a smaller household without children. Despite his looks, he is not a cuddler or 'hold me, hug me' type of dog. He is strong willed and has spent the last 2 years with a foster who has been smoothing out his rough edges. He has made great progress but will always need a strong and consistent leader to help keep him secure, comfortable, and happy. He likes the company of other dogs. This is a courtesy crosspost. You must email corinnemariep@hotmail.com for more information.
