Posted Breed: Terrier / Boxer / Mixed. Patti's Christmas wish......a home for the holidays! Patti has been perhaps our most overlooked dog this year. Patti has learned to walk nicely on a halti leash, goes potty mostly outside, (new transitions and routines may be throwing her off, but we think she spent the first year of her life tethered up outside somewhere) and her excitability around other animals turns out to be the biggest Joie de vive! She sees every new animal as somebody to play with! Most cats seem to find her wrestling highly offensive though. At adoption events she is the first knucklehead to roll over for a belly rub, or bowl you over to give kisses! We think she may be part American Bulldog, cause she is either really stubborn or really dense. She's had no issues sharing toys or deferring to other resident dogs. While she isn't looking for trouble, she is confident and won't take getting bullied. Her fosters can get her attention faster than their own dogs. While she likes food, she eats with the others without an issue. Kids are able to hug her and lay on her and she loves the doggy bed. She can be a bit of a bull in a china shop when she is excited, but she's lovely. Please help us find this girl the fur ever home she deserves for the holidays! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Basenji / Mixed. What an incredibly sweet dog! Dini came to us with 7 young pups and a terrible eye condition. After assessing her eyes, it was determined that the best course of action, to help her live a pain free life, was to remove both eyes. She may now be officially blind, but you'd NEVER know it! She follows the sound of your voice, is very appreciative of a nice bath and comfy couch, and would benefit from a home with routine and another dog to show her the way. She does love the company of other dogs and is often the one to initiate play. Here's some tips for living with a blind dog: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2085&aid=3620 Serious inquiries only. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Princess Leia is looking for a FOREVER HOME. After a rough past, multiple litters, and almost getting hit on the streets of Baltimore last month, her fosters have been providing her with some much needed TLC. She was horribly emaciated, sick, and sad but has come such a long way! She's a very very sweet dog, that loves baths, head rubs and sweet talks AND ritz crackers, but she can still skittish and afraid of loud noises. Leia is approximately 2 years old and would be best suited for a family that has older children and a fenced in yard for her to run and play. Her fosters have been working on leash walking as that seems to be a new concept for her. She appears to get along well with other animals and is currently fostered with an older male. This is a courtesy crosspost. If you are interested in this sweet girl, you must submit a non-binding app to meet her http://kninerescue.rescuegroups.org/info/file?file=19787.pdf

Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Miniature Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Tasca is the sweetest snuggle bug. She is extremely loyal to her trusted humans. Loves walks, hikes, lying around. Whatever you're doing, she's game. Tasca is approximately 4 years young and would do fantastic with another secure/calm dog to show her the ropes. She's crate trained, house broken and super smart. She's learned how to sit pretty and knows the difference between her right and left. Her ideal home has adults and older kids only. This is a courtesy crosspost. You must email areiqate@hotmail.com for more information.
