Posted Breed: Boxer / English Bulldog / Mixed. WANTED! A relatively chilled out family or person who does not have any cats or other dogs but would love a sweet, cuddly, loving, side-saddle riding, chilled out, middle-aged girl. Meet TRIXIE! This is a summary of Trixie's story. Trixie spent the first four years of her life on a very short chain and was very nearly starved to death. Animal Aid Vermilion area rescued her and took her into foster care. A best guess is that Trixie is part English bully and American Staffordshire pit. Once Trixie got into foster care she started gaining weight like crazy. We would learn that she is hypothyroid and has a genetic disorder called spondylosis (spinal issue). It took us quite a while to get her weight back down but that and her hypothyroid has been stabilized for quite some time on very inexpensive medication. We have followed her spondylosis and x-rays do not show any further deterioration. We did however find out that both of her back knees needed repairing, we raised funds and two successful surgeries were completed. Trixie can now Run and Jump as she pleases when she pleases. Fortunately, she's just not real hyper although she does like to silly play and loves playing with adolescent kids and adults. But she's just as happy sitting or laying with you in a room. She is most relaxed and absolutely loves to ride in a vehicle. Trixie is easy to bathe, easy to give medicine to and really not even difficult to nail clip. She's potty trained. She's wonderful. She's beautiful. She loves people and everybody who meets Trixie wishes they could take her home. Trixie is about 8 years old now and we need to find her that home where she will live out the rest of her days very comfortably and very loved. She has been with me for a year now and only God knows I do not want to let her go. However, I do have cats and lots of other dogs and Trixie is not comfortable with other dogs being around her resources. She needs her own family who will take her on Long rides and long walks and/or has a fenced-in yard. She deserves companionship and her own family. If you know some good people who fit this description please contact me or ask them to fill out an application at http://aavarescue.com/adoptions.php

More About Bull-Boxer Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hey lady! Yeah you! Hi! I’m Samantha. I’m around 2-3 years old. I’m a lot of fun and have a lot of energy, unless there is a man around. When they show up, I freeze or growl and run away. I’ve never tried to bite anyone but they sure do scare me! One time I ran to my kennel and this man wanted to be my friend so bad he crawled in there with me… You know what I did? I went #2. Literally! So embarrassing! Another time this guy who lives in my foster house walked in to the bathroom and I jumped in the tub with my foster mom because I was so scared. I just can’t help it. I don’t want to be their friend, EVER! My foster mom though, I sure love her. She lets me sit in her lap and cuddle. She gives great belly rubs which I LOVE! No really, I love belly rubs. Yep, she and I get along just fine. I wish it was just me and her. Well, maybe the other animals could stay because I get along with them too. In fact, I could play all day with my doggy friends…sometimes I wear them out. I get along with cats too. They were scared of me at first because I can go really fast sometimes, but now they love me. Speaking of fast, do you have a fence? That would be awesome because I love to run around in the yard! I’ll let you know. Yes, I’m kennel trained. In fact I like my kennel. It’s safe in there. I may sound a little complicated or needy, but once you meet me and we get to know each other, I know you’ll just love me because I really am a sweet girl and I will love you unconditionally. Do you think you could be my furever mom?? I think you could! Just please don’t make me be friends with a man and we’ll get along just fine.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Hello! My name is Molly and I am the mom of three babies. I don't know how it happened but we ended up in a shelter for a little while, but we're not there anymore. Now we have our own quiet, comfortable room and we are all very relieved. I was told that I should tell you a little bit about me so here goes. I am very easy-going and tender-hearted so I try to be as polite as possible. Sometimes I a m a little shy at first. I may be a mixture of pointer and lab because I'm not very big at about 30 pounds and when I see something that interests me my tail goes up and my nose goes up. People say my eyes are beautiful, they're kind of gold and they're very loving like me. I love my puppies and I take very good care of them. It means a lot to me for people to be happy with me so I am very well behaved. I am house-trained and pee pad trained. As long as I have a toy or someone to keep me company and play with I don't tear up anything. Maybe I just dreamed it but I think I used to go hunting with people before I had my puppies. I love the outdoors but it's just as important to me to get hugs and kisses because I'm very affectionate and calm. This place is nice and my foster mom is very sweet to us but I really want my own family that will love me and keep me forever. Everyday I wish and hope and think about a family that would want to keep me forever. That's all I want and as long as they love me then I will stay forever. I have to go outside and explore quite a bit and I hope that's not a problem for my new family. They say I am very good on a leash but that I'm also very good even if the lease is not hooked to my collar. Are you the person that's going to love me forever?

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Peanut was pulled from the Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control on August 6th and was placed in boarding because we did not have a foster home for him. That is where he was when the flood waters came. He almost drowned. Peanut had to be rescued by wading in chest deep water. When they got there you could only see his snout and he was clinging to the gate of the kennel to save himself. He was placed into a temporary foster home where we discovered he didn't get along with the the female dog in the house. So once the water went down, he was brought him right back to the cell where he almost drowned. We cannot imagine how he must feel. Peanut has a great personality and does well with male dogs. We feel once he is able to be neutered, he will be a fantastic pet.

      Titus

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Titus! Before I tell you about this wonderful, goofy boy, let me give you his back story. Titus is a pit mix, about 6 years old, who was surrendered to the rescue about a year ago after a good samaritan begged for months in an attempt to change his living conditions. Titus was living in a dirt filled yard, chained to a tree with a moldy dog house as his only shelter surviving on whatever they fed him, mainly chicken feed. After being told Titus would die from his se vere heartworm infection if not treated, they agreed to surrender him. He was coughing up blood and retaining fluid from the heartworm infection and his skin was in terrible condition. After a long journey to get healthy, Titus is ready for his forever home. Titus was not properly socialized before coming to the rescue so he does not do well with dogs his size, but is a sucker for puppies. Seriously, he turns to mush when with a puppy or two. Titus is NOT cat friendly. He also becomes very attached to his human companion and doesn’t like to share. He is not aggressive with others, but really wants to be the center of attention. Titus has some allergy issues that will require daily medication for the rest of his life, but it doesn't slow him down. Titus is playful and silly, pure entertainment, and guaranteed to make you laugh daily. He loves to play fetch and tug, taking walks through the neighborhood, or relaxing on the couch (usually in your lap). Titus is crate trained, house broken, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations. Because of Titus’ quirks, we feel he would do best in a single person household as the only pet. To adopt this wonderful boy, complete the adoption application at animalaidvermilionarea.com
