If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Bloo

      rescue
      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Rhodesian Ridgeback / Mixed (short coat). DOB: June 2005 || BREED/COLORING: Australian Shepherd and Rhodesian Ridgeback mix - red (he has one blue eye and one brown eye) || SIZE: Bloo weighs about 40bs and is full grown || HISTORY: Bloo was dumped at a City Shelter by his family in late 2005. We saw him at a big adoption event and decided to get him out of the shelter before he was euthanized. || PERSONALITY: Bloo is an amazing boy. He is very sweet and smart and absolutely LOVES to be petted and brushed. He makes gurgling noises when you scratch his neck and he's just waggy and friendly all the time. || TRAINING: Bloo knows SIT and is great on leash when he has a good handler. He will need some re-work on his housebreaking, but is so smart it won't take long. He is also great with a crate - so he could be crate trained really easily too. || WOULD DO BEST: Bloo would like a yard for sure - maybe even another doggie to hang out with. He would do great with someone who has at least some experience with dog training - and would probably REALLY do well at agility training. || CATS/DOGS/KIDS: Bloo has been around indoor cats his whole life and is indifferent to them. He is great with other dogs on a one-on-one basis - but isn't recommended for dog parks because he will try to referee any doggie argument that takes place :) Bloo would make a FANTASTIC family dog for homes with children. || VET RECORD :All of our dogs are currently vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. || AVAILABILITY: This dog is available for adoption now and is being fostered or kenneled in the San Fernando Valley area. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). DOB: March 2009 || BREED/COLORING: Shepherd mix; brown/black || SIZE: Manny weighs about 60lbs and is full grown || HISTORY: Manny and his brother were irresponsibly bred by a family with unaltered dogs. We stepped in and got their mom and dad fixed and took the pups to find them homes. || PERSONALITY: Manny is a nervous boy who really tends to bond with women more than men. Once he knows you, he is super sweet and loving and kissy - but he's not the best in public because he feels he needs to "protect" his handler. || TRAINING: Manny will require some basic obedience to boost his confidence - as well as continued crate training to be 100% housebroken. || WOULD DO BEST: Manny needs a yard to run in that does not have street access (he will be very protective of the yard if he can see the street). He needs a dog-savvy handler that is willing to show him the ropes as well as rub his belly. || CATS/DOGS/KIDS: Manny is good with another dog if he is introduced properly. In his current foster home he is with a female pit mix and also gets along with the foster's own dogs. He is great with cats and would be okay with older children. || VET RECORD :All of our dogs are currently vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. || AVAILABILITY: This dog is available for adoption now and is being fostered or kenneled in the San Fernando Valley area. Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). DOB: approximately July 2010 These two pitty girls were rescued from the Pasadena shelter as puppies. They are fully grown and weigh about 40ish pounds. These girls are super sweet and friendly and waggy. They are spayed, fully vaccinated and microchipped and ready for new homes. They would do best in homes that are familiar with the fabulous pitty breed and a requirement of their adoption is that they must attend obedience classes. If you have another dog in the home it must be a male. These girls need homes with yards... and would love homes with kids too! They are great with cats as well :) Please email for an application. Adoption process involves a homecheck - local adoptions only.

      Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). DOB: January 2011 Breed/Coloring: Catahoula Leopard Dog Mix Size: Brenna weighs about 55lbs and is full grown History: Brenna and her littermates were dumped at a Ventura shelter when they were three months old by a backyard breeder. We rescued them from there right before they would have been euthanized. Personality: Brenna has a LOT of energy and is very sweet with people. She can be very affectionate and is SUPER willing to please people. She is very smart and would do well with proper training - maybe even some Agility Training :) Training: Brenna has not really had much opportunity to be trained because she has been kenneled most of her life. She will need work on housebreaking, basic obedience, and leash. We strongly recommend starting her off with crate training and an in-home consultation with a trainer. We are prepared to lower her adoption fee to offset the cost of an in-home trainer. As smart as she is, we don't think that it will take her long to become a fantastic member of any household. Would Do Best: Brenna would do best as an only-dog in a home with a large yard space. She needs a family that will spend time on her training and that has some experience with training a larger, young dog. Please read about her breed and their needs here: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/catahoula.htm Vet Record :All of our dogs are currently vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. Cats, Dogs and Kids: Brenna cannot be with cats or other dogs because of her breed and prey drive. She would be great with older children that could withstand her energy level and size because she will want to PLAY PLAY PLAY. Availability: This dog is available for adoption now and is being fostered or kenneled in the San Fernando Valley area. Please email us and we will send you an adoption application. She has lived at the kennel ever since then and would love to have a home of her own. Personality: Layla is very sweet but a bit shy. She likes to be the Alpha doggie with other dogs, but is timid with people. Once she has a "normal" life we know she will blossom into a super friendly girl. Training: Layla has been in a kennel environment so she will need work on her housebreaking - she would like a doggie door. Would Do Best: Layla would do best with in an adult only home with someone who can give her the love and time she deserves - someone who is not gone for long hours every day. Vet Record: All of our dogs are currently vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped upon adoption. Bella Bunny ...

      rescue
      Breed: American Bulldog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). DOB: June 2005 || BREED/COLORING: Purebred American Bulldog / White with small black spots || SIZE: Bella Bunny weighs about 90lbs and is full grown || HISTORY: Bella Bunny was a puppy mill breeder mommy who has spent her whole life in a small cage giving birth to puppies. The puppy mill was busted by Animal Control and rescue groups stepped up and saved all of the mommy dogs. || PERSONALITY: Bella Bunny is a super sweet and kissy dog. She is really interested in being in your lap - if you can believe that! She is very people-oriented even though she has been ignored and mistreated for years. She is a bit shy sometimes, but learns to love you very quickly. She is definitely a volunteer favorite. || TRAINING: This girl has spent her whole life in a cage, so housebreaking will need to be worked on. She needs a doggie door and a yard and will learn quickly. She is FANTASTIC on leash but because her back legs have been affected by a life in a cage (she's bowlegged), she should not go on walks too much. || WOULD DO BEST: Bella Bunny would do best in a home with a family that has a lot of time to show her love and attention in her Golden years. She wants to be part of the family - she has never known family :( She needs a large yard, a big doggie bed and doggie door. || VET RECORD: Currently vaccinated and microchipped. Bella Bunny has "cage legs" in the back from spending so much time confined in a small space. It looks like she is bowlegged. Her back legs don't work well for climbing or getting into cars... but she does her best and doesn't mind us helping her. Bella is beyond her breeding years so she is not yet spayed. Prior to her getting a retirement home we will ask our vet to evaluate whether it is safe to spay her at her age. || CATS/DOGS/KIDS: She is a bit defensive with other dogs at first, but does play great with male dogs at least 40lbs in size. She would be absolutely fantastic with kids. || AVAILABILITY: This dog is available for adoption now and is being fostered or kenneled in the San Fernando Valley area.
