Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Finn is a puppymill reject, too old to 'produce' anymore. Guessed between 8 and 10 years old and is about 10 lbs. He lost most of his teeth in his recent dental so his tongue hangs out (pretty cute actually). He is not house trained but tolerates a belly band well. Gets along well with the other little dogs but they do all have to be separated at meal time. He is pretty friendly and social considering his past. Likes to cuddle and give kisses. No small children please! He will either need a fenced yard or someone committed to harness and leash walks to keep him safe. No tie outs! He doesn't really need or want much exercise. He is now of course neutered, fully vetted, all vaccines, heartworm tested and micro-chipped. E-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for an application or more information. He is being fostered in the Grundy Center Ia area. Please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com directly and don't use the auto response...thanks!

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (medium coat). Bear came to us when his owner died unexpectedly. He is a very sweet boy who has now adjusted well to the changes in his life. He is about 9 years old and about 30 lbs. Appears to be house trained and was an indoor/outdoor 'farm' dog in his previous life. No more of that and will be adopted as a house dog only. He will chase cars and a fenced yard is required. He likes to play fetch and is good with other dogs and would enjoy a dog companion. There was also a cat in the home so should be good with them too. He was in desperate need of a grooming which is now done, he is also now neutered and fully vetted. E-mail is always the first step for more information or an application.

      Breed: Pembroke Welsh Corgi-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: Corgi / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Update, Vinnie has gone to a foster home in the Jewell IA area and he is great with other dogs but we have found he will chase cats. So would say no cats at this time however he could probably be corrected if someone wanted to work on this and the cats didn't run?...Vinnie ended up stray at an animal control unit and we pulled him when his time was up. Looks to be maybe a Terrier/Corgi/Poodle mix but who really knows? About 10 years old and 15# he seems to be a very sweet little guy. Would say no small children but older respectful kids should be ok. Is house trained but may make mistakes in a new situation until he settles in. Seeking a furever home this time around. E-mail is always the first step for an application or more information.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). Wallace (Wally) was pulled from an animal control unit when his time was up. He is a senior boy, 10-12 years old and was an unclaimed stray so we have no history. He is very thin and we are working on getting him to gain some wgt. He is currently about 60 lbs. He is also a little wobbly in the back end so no stairs for this kid. All his bloodwork came back normal. He is a very nice dog who will make a great low key companion for the right home. Neutered, fully vetted and micro-chipped. We adopt to indoor homes only. He is not a lawn ornament. E-mail is always the first step for more info or an application.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (medium coat). Kristella originally came to us as a retired breeder in 2008 and was promptly adopted. She had a great life for many years until her 'Mom' died in 2015 which we were unaware of and none of the 3 grown children could be bothered to care for her. Apparently she got passed around and recently ended up somehow in Illinois at an animal control where her micro-chip led her back to us. She is 14 now and we have gotten her current once again current on her vetting, including a much needed dental. Stella is a bigger Yorkie and very sweet, altho a little shy and a home with small kids would be too much for her. She is currently being fostered with other small dogs and cats and gets along fine. She is not reliably house trained but will use potty pads. She would prefer a securely fenced yard. E-mail is ALWAYS the first step for more info or an application.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This kid was abandoned by his former family when he ingested something and became obstructed. By the time we got him he was very sick and very thin. He has now had successful surgery, been neutered, vetted, all vaccines, heart worm tested and micro-chipped and is ready to look for a real family. Only about 9 months old he is all puppy. Weighs between 50-60 lbs right now and has some growing to do. He is currently in a foster home in the Des Moines area and he is crate and house trained. He will need an attentive home as he is a chewer when bored and needs to be monitored to be sure he doesn't ingest something again. Securely fenced yard and active family required to keep his mind and body exercised. Very people friendly altho he is too active for smaller children as he is still working on his manners and sometimes gets excited and jumps up. Really likes other dogs and would like a larger dog playmate. Must go to an area without breed bans and be sure your insurance covers bully breeds before inquiring. We don't adopt to outdoor only homes and he must be a member of the family. Lifetime only homes, e-mail is always the first step for more information or an application.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jenny has waited far too long for her forever commitment and it is starting to wear on her. On the plus side...House trained, perfect size, great house manners, walks well on a leash and has good recall off leash. Loyal, affectionate and protective, this is a great dog for the RIGHT home! And she loves water..and the mud it makes too! On the minus side she is not good with new dogs but will make up with a proper introduction and time, and she needs an experienced adult only home where she isn't allowed to run the show. She will need someone who is willing to visit her several times to get to know her prior to adoption. Happy once she bonds with you, and active, she always appears to be smiling but she is getting sad at the shelter and NEEDS her own home. One that will stick by her thru thick and thin. Spayed and fully vetted, e-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for more information or an application. Please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com directly and don't use the auto response...thanks!

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Isabelle was transferred from another shelter and is now in a foster home. She is just in and we are getting to know her. Her previous owners surrendered her as they say they didn't have time for her? 13 years young, she doesn't require much and should be a pretty easy keeper. She has been around other dogs and should be fine with others who are friendly and stay out of her business but as always a proper introduction is required. Cats are unknown. Small children make her nervous and an adult only home would be best. A fenced yard is preferred to keep her safe. She is fully vetted. Indoor only, forever home wanted. A belly band helps too. No small children please! He gets along well with the other small dogs but does need to be separated at meal time.
