Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Finn is a puppymill reject, too old to 'produce' anymore. Guessed between 8 and 10 years old and is about 10 lbs. He lost most of his teeth in his recent dental so his tongue hangs out (pretty cute actually). He is not house trained but tolerates a belly band well. Gets along well with the other little dogs but they do all have to be separated at meal time. He is pretty friendly and social considering his past. Likes to cuddle and give kisses. No small children please! He will either need a fenced yard or someone committed to harness and leash walks to keep him safe. No tie outs! He doesn't really need or want much exercise. He is now of course neutered, fully vetted, all vaccines, heartworm tested and micro-chipped. E-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for an application or more information. He is being fostered in the Grundy Center Ia area. Please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com directly and don't use the auto response...thanks!

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This kid was abandoned by his former family when he ingested something and became obstructed. By the time we got him he was very sick and very thin. He has now had successful surgery, been neutered, vetted, all vaccines, heart worm tested and micro-chipped and is ready to look for a real family. Only about 9 months old he is all puppy. Weighs between 50-60 lbs right now and has some growing to do. He is currently in a foster home in the Des Moines area and he is crate and house trained. He will need an attentive home as he is a chewer when bored and needs to be monitored to be sure he doesn't ingest something again. Securely fenced yard and active family required to keep his mind and body exercised. Very people friendly altho he is too active for smaller children as he is still working on his manners and sometimes gets excited and jumps up. Really likes other dogs and would like a larger dog playmate. Must go to an area without breed bans and be sure your insurance covers bully breeds before inquiring. We don't adopt to outdoor only homes and he must be a member of the family. Lifetime only homes, e-mail is always the first step for more information or an application.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jenny has waited far too long for her forever commitment and it is starting to wear on her. On the plus side...House trained, perfect size, great house manners, walks well on a leash and has good recall off leash. Loyal, affectionate and protective, this is a great dog for the RIGHT home! And she loves water..and the mud it makes too! On the minus side she is not good with new dogs but will make up with a proper introduction and time, and she needs an experienced adult only home where she isn't allowed to run the show. She will need someone who is willing to visit her several times to get to know her prior to adoption. Happy once she bonds with you, and active, she always appears to be smiling but she is getting sad at the shelter and NEEDS her own home. One that will stick by her thru thick and thin. Spayed and fully vetted, e-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for more information or an application. Please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com directly and don't use the auto response...thanks!

Posted Breed: Corgi / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Update, Vinnie has gone to a foster home in the Jewell IA area and he is great with other dogs but we have found he will chase cats. So would say no cats at this time however he could probably be corrected if someone wanted to work on this and the cats didn't run?...Vinnie ended up stray at an animal control unit and we pulled him when his time was up. Looks to be maybe a Terrier/Corgi/Poodle mix but who really knows? About 10 years old and 15# he seems to be a very sweet little guy. Would say no small children but older respectful kids should be ok. Is house trained but may make mistakes in a new situation until he settles in. Seeking a furever home this time around. E-mail is always the first step for an application or more information.

Posted Breed: Corgi / Mixed (medium coat). Sweet senior boy who we took in when his time was up at an animal control unit. Looks to be a Corgi mixed with who knows what? About 10 years old and thin at 28#. Unfortunately he tested heartworm positive so as soon as we can get a little wgt on him he will be undergoing treatment and then will need to be kept pretty quiet for several weeks. Already vaccinated and micro-chipped, he will be neutered as soon as he is healthy enough. Appears to be house trained and is a pretty mellow and nice boy who deserves a wonderful home. Totally ignored the cat he met and should be fine with other friendly dogs. E-mail is always the first step for more info or an application.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Isabelle was transferred from another shelter and is now in a foster home. She is just in and we are getting to know her. Her previous owners surrendered her as they say they didn't have time for her? 13 years young, she doesn't require much and should be a pretty easy keeper. She has been around other dogs and should be fine with others who are friendly and stay out of her business but as always a proper introduction is required. Cats are unknown. Small children make her nervous and an adult only home would be best. A fenced yard is preferred to keep her safe. She is fully vetted. Indoor only, forever home wanted. Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Eldora, IA
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound. Where to start with Walt? Found wandering on a hwy, 20 lbs underweight and barely hanging on. His vet visit discovered internal and external parasites, a raging UTI and he was heartworm positive. Several months later and he has now packed on the pounds, been neutered, vaccinated, treated for his UTI, micro-chipped and had his heartworm treatment which was successful. He will need to be kept on heartworm preventative as all dogs should be but it is imperative for him. About 6 years old, 75 lbs now, he is a typical Coonhound, stubborn and somewhat independent, he is also sensitive and gentle and will need someone who can take their time, be patient and understand that he has had a pretty crappy life until now. Not an apartment dog, not a farm dog or lawn ornament, he will require a securely fenced yard or in hound fashion, he would follow his nose into the sunset. Should be fine with other similar sized friendly dogs but would say no to cats or other small furries. E-mail is always the first step for more information or an application.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Sawyer was a puppy mill release. Guessed at about 3 years old and he weighs 13 lbs. He is shy but making progress in his foster home. He will need a more experienced home and is not for the first time dog owner. He is not house trained but is working on crate training and house training will come with patience and consistency. A belly band helps too. No small children please! He gets along well with the other small dogs but does need to be separated at meal time. He will need a fenced yard or someone committed to keeping him safe with harness and leash walks. No tieing these mill dogs out unattended as it isn't safe. He is being fostered in the Grundy Center Ia area.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Golden Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). 4-13-13 6 months old and still waiting. She is house trained now, making progress but still very, very shy and a flight risk so please be aware of this before inquiring. 1-15-2013 Just 12 to 14 weeks old Ava has never known the comforts of a home or family. She started her life out on the streets. Read more here http://www.facebook.com/TheForlornDogsOhHughesAr?ref=ts&fref=ts A small Arkansas town is inundated with stray and abandoned dogs. Many are shot by locals, hit on the roads or die from starvation. We wanted to help so Ava and several others made the trip to Iowa. She is still figuring out that all humans aren't bad and will need a securely fenced yard and a doggy friend would be great to help her adjust. She will be available as soon as she is spayed and vetted (done). Our first contact is ALWAYS e-mail for an application or more information. Note...Please understand how shy she is before inquiring! She is not for the first time or inexperenced dog owner. She requires a fenced yard and a quieter home without small children...for her own safety!
