Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Shiba Inu / Mixed. Dog from the second database Hi! My name is Campbell. I am about 5 years old. I am a Shiba Inu/German Shephard mix. I am around knee high and weigh about 50lbs. I was rescued from a local city shelter along with my sister, Gianna (Syd). I am a sweet and fun loving dog. I like lots of attention from my foster family. I love playing ball and have started retrieving it and bringing it back to the person who threw it. I am crate trained. I can be a little shy when I first meet someone and it takes me a little while to feel comfortable around new people. I enjoy giving my humans lots of kisses. I get along with the dogs in my foster home. When I meet a new dog, I need to be introduced because I feel a little insecure around other dogs that I don't know. Once I have been introduced to a new dog, I become comfortable and want to be friends and play with them. We review all applications received and select the best home for the dog based on what we know of its personality, habits, and behaviors.Anyone interested in our dogs will be required to fill out an adoption application which includes a home visit by one of our volunteers. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed. Hi! My name is Chiquita! I was picked up by Animal Control after I had been hit by a car. I have a microchip so the shelter called my human and told them what had happened. He didn’t come get me. After my hold time was up, the shelter was going to have to euthanize me because I was in pain and I couldn’t be put in their adoption program. They called Frisco Humane Society and they took me and got me the vet care I needed. My pelvis was broken. I was pregnant but my puppies didn’t survive. I use to have to walk on my front paws but that is all history now. I love to run and play. I like to play with dog toys and play fetch. I’m crate trained and house trained. I get along well with other dogs my size but not so much with cats. I don’t have any small children in my home but I think I would do fine with children 7 years and older. My estimated birthday is 03/30/2008 For further information please email the address in the box to the right. Anyone interested in our dogs/cats will be required to fill out an adoption application. Breed: Chihuahua

      Location: Frisco, TX
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher. Dog from the second database This lil dude is Radar! Radar is a happy boy who's eager to learn and quick to snuggle. He loves to bound around the yard and roll over on his back for a good scratch. He’s a happy energetic bouncy boy, but all in all - pick him up, and he's content in your arms, immediately calm and happy. His estimated date of birth is August 30, 2009. This 14 pound Chihuahua mix first got on my (his foster mom) radar as I walked my dog Riley. It was obvious he had been roaming the streets for quite a while when we first saw him, but he came right up to Riley. As I reached to pet him, he limped off – down a few houses and out of reach. We went to investigate and saw that even with rocks being thrown at him, he wouldn’t leave this yard because there was a female dog. So, I lured him with some cheese, picked him up and headed to the vet. Poor Radar had been limping from a broken leg. Most likely he had been hit by a car but never received the treatment needed to heal correctly. Sadly, the leg had to be amputated. It didn’t stop Radar though – he’s one happy-go-lucky boy! After weeks of recovery, he’s ready for a family of his own! This lap dog does well with other animals, is house and crate trained. Please fill out an adoption application today to offer Radar a home! For further information please email the address in the box to the right. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Hello everyone. I’m not sure how old I am but maybe 3 or 4 years. I ended up at an overcrowded county shelter and the scuttlebutt was that my time was limited. I feel very lucky to have been chosen for rescue over so many of my canine friends there. I hope their fate turned out to be like mine. My foster mom has named me Mulligan because I’ve been given a 2nd chance to not only have a life, but to have a better life. I’ve had all my shots and was neutered (I already behave better because of it). I am learning to be a good boy in the house and I am crate trained. When I first meet people I am a little hesitant, but if they pass the smell test I let them rub my belly. And I don’t care if there is room or not, I will try to sit in your lap. I would enjoy being an only dog or maybe have a submissive canine sister (I enjoy playing with my FHS sister Minka). No cats please. For further information please email the address in the box to the right. Anyone interested in our dogs/cats will be required to fill out an adoption application. My name is Jimmy, by the way. And I hate to brag, but I’m awesome. There, I said it! I’m just an all-around really nice dog and I’d love to find a person, couple or family who appreciates how cool I am. I’m about 4 years old, weigh 35# and I’m a "Boxer/Terrier-cetera". I am house-trained and crate-trained. But that’s not all...I’m very smart, eager to please, highly-trainable, friendly with strangers and other dogs, and very loyal to my humans. I could settle in SO easily and effortlessly in a new home!! I’m playful and moderately-active. Give me the opportunity to get tired each day, and I’m a happy camper. I’d make a great walking buddy for you, or maybe we could also go to the dog park? I’d LOVE to be your forever boy. Please consider making me a member of your family! :) Health/Behavior Profile Breed or Mix: Boxer/Terrier Mix Age: Young (estimated DOB 03-12-10) Anticipated size: full grown at about 35 lbs. Sex: Male Health Basic Vaccinations: Distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus and bordetella (kennel cough), current until April 5, 2015 (are being renewed by the end of this week) Rabies Vaccination: Renewed by 380 Animal Hospital on November 15, 2014 with three year vaccination - current until November 15, 2017 Spay or Neuter: Performed by Texas Coalition for Animal Protection at Collin County Animal Shelter on April 10, 2012 Microchip: Implanted on June 1, 2012 - service provided by 24PetWatch.com Grooming needs: Minimal, no brushing normally needed. Special needs: Protection from cold weather Medical issues: None known Behavior Activity Level: Moderate normally - will kick into “high” when playing Meal time: Has never displayed any food aggression to other dogs Housetraining: Does good – hasn’t had an accident inside - also, marking is minimal Barking: Normal, i.e., doesn’t hesitate to bark if a noise is heard or something unusual seen – but has never barked without reason – would probably bark too much if left outside at night – and see below under behavior “Toward other dogs” Chewing: Doesn’t seem to have any interest in chewing – often ignores rawhide chews when offered - chewing on furniture has never been a problem Digging: Has never dug any noticeable amount Greeting a friendly stranger: A little wary of friendly strangers/visitors – does best with adults and older children – tends to get anxious and nippy around younger or small children Toward other dogs: He is basically friendly to most dogs - however, does not seem to like some and so he is not a good choice for a dog park – also, (this is where it gets a little crazy) he seems to get tired of being around the dogs that he likes – he will stand a few feet from one of them, or a few of them, and start barking at them nonstop – but, never attacks or fights with them - after he is put in his own separate, day time area, he is okay and stops barking – just gets a little cranky and needs some time alone Toward cats: unknown. While being petted: Enjoys physical closeness with familiar family members Walking on a leash: Does very good Riding in a car: Readily loads up in vehicle – well behaved while riding For further information please email the address in the box to the right. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Blossom's estimated date of birth is July 18, 2012, and is a very special little puppy that survived being abandoned in a grocery store parking lot at 3 weeks of age. She was brought to the shelter by a concerned citizen as the shelter staff were closing for the evening. The ACO knew that a 3 week old puppy would never survive without feedings every 2 hours and constant care. She contacted a foster with Frisco Humane Society in hopes that Blossom would be saved. The foster drove late at night and met the ACO after hours and hugged the tiny little puppy close to her chest and whispered "You are safe now little one." Blossom was bottle fed for the next few weeks and began to grow into a precious little puppy. As a bottle baby, she has a special bond with humans. She loves her fleece blankets, dog beds and toys...and playing tag is a favorite past time. If you believe that you can give Blossom a forever home please contact Frisco Humand Society. To anyone who dismisses our breed as fussy and yappy, we say: Oh, puleeeese! That is so NOT our style! We never have a bad day, never meet a stranger, and never fail to make the ladies swoon. (George Clooney, eat your heart out!) We are big-time Casanovas and give the best Chihuahua kisses. If you give us half a chance, we will tag-team our way right into your heart! Foster Mom (the nice lady who takes care of us) tells us every day what sweet boys we are. We like the sound of her voice (and truth be told, we totally have her wrapped around our paws). We are each other's wing man - the very best of buddies. We even share a crate and a dog bed in our foster home. We get along well with other dogs and, even though we don't currently live with cats, we're sure we'd like them just fine. Foster Mom tells us that one day very soon, we'll find our forever home, where a special person, couple or family will love us forever! That sounds pretty cool! Because we consider ourselves “brothers from another mother”, we've decided that we want to stick together. We're hoping that “forever home place” has enough love and room for both of us. If you're interested in being our “forever home place”, please send the nice people at Frisco Humane Society an application. Thank you! XOXO, Hank (3YO, 10# black & tan handsome boy) and Leroy (4YO 5# red & white handsome boy) For further information please email the address in the box to the right. Anyone interested in our dogs/cats will be required to fill out an adoption application. We do not adopt to anyone living out of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. All our dogs/cats will be spayed/neutered, heart worm tested (dogs), FeLV/FIV tested (cats), microchipped; and current on vaccinations. We do not adopt on a first-come first-served basis. We review all applications received to ensure that the animal and the applicant are a good match based on our personal experiences with the animal. These animals live in our homes with us so we are familiar with their habits and behaviors. To fill out an application online or to find out more information about our adoption process, just go to www.friscohumanesociety.com and click on the 'Adoption Application' link. Dog/Puppy Adoption Donation - $165 Cat/Kitten Adoption Donation - $135 Some of our adoptable cats can be seen at the Frisco Petsmart Adopt-A-Pet cat center 7 days a week. Adoption counselors are onsite every Saturday and Sunday from 12-4pm. Our next Meet and Greet dog event will be Saturday, December 3rd from 12-4pm at the Frisco Petsmart. The Frisco Petsmart is located at 3333 Preston Rd, Frisco, TX 75034 in the Stonebriar Centre near Tuesday Morning and DSW.
