Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). *SANCTUARY VISIT REQUIRED* For the first six years of her life, Kiwi (born in 2008) didn't really have anyone she could rely on. Yet, she has decided that people deserve a second chance. She still needs a lot of encouragement, but is willing to put herself out there. Because her former life was a bit chaotic, Kiwi prefers calm and pleasant routines. She may be a little girl, but she's got a big brain and is eager to learn new things. Kiwi guards food, and is a bit picky at first with her doggy friends, but she is happy to be learning about this thing called love and can't wait to find a person of her own to share it with. Kiwi's story is featured in our Animals with Special Needs section of the website which highlights special needs pets at our Kanab UT sanctuary. Read Kiwi's very special story here.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Kanab, UT
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). *SANCTUARY VISIT REQUIRED* When Romo's person passed away, he was left behind with no place to go. Romo is a boxer mix who is selective about his human friends and sometimes takes a little extra time to get to know you. Once he gets to know you he will latch onto you as though he's afraid you might disappear like his mom did. Romo was born in 2005, and he really loves people, though he needs a little work on his manners sometimes. His favorite activities include playing with toys and going to the dog park to play with more toys. He's awfully affectionate, and craves attention and excitement. Romo does need to be an only dog and hopes you don't mind. He also has serious back leg issues, having cruciate surgery on both legs, and they are painful and not in great shape. His memories take him back to the days of having a home sometimes. He wishes he could be there again. Do you think he could be yours?

Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (short coat). *SANCTUARY VISIT REQUIRED* Shocky can be a handful, but she's full of fun and joy, and she just needs someone to share it all with! Shocky really needs some stability in life, too. She was rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as a little puppy. Somebody adopted her immediately, and then gave her up! Next, she went to a rescue group, and then, well, this girl has just had no earth under her feet. She needs a really dog-savvy handler to keep her from redirecting or snapping in stressful situations. She loves to be petted and cuddled, but not on her hips, which are starting to hurt these days. Shocky knows 'sit' and she comes when you call her. She can be a little hit-or-miss with other dogs. But she's a happy girl who needs some stability, and who really needs a place she can finally call home.

Posted Breed: Anatolian Shepherd (short coat). Poor Tarlton had a rough life before he came to Best Friends. He was named for the construction yard where he was found. Perhaps because of something in his rugged past, he shows some guard dog behavior. He needs a slow introduction to new people, but once he gets to know them, Tarlton becomes the most affectionate dog. He loves to give slobbery kisses and to climb in people's laps, even though he really doesn't fit.

Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Shar Pei / Mixed (short coat). She could either be totally attentive or daydreaming. Who can tell by those ears? Actually, Joy offers the best of both worlds! Her attentive side is eager to please people. She already knows sit, stay, down and come. All she wants in return are love and tummy rubs, which bring us to... Her dreamy side! Those belly scratches send her right into a fantasy world. Those eyes are usually laser-focused, but you can just see her zone out under the spell of your touch. Her dreams are filled with wishes for love and belly rubs from a person of her very own. Joy has Babesia, a blood disorder usually picked up from a tick bite. Because it can be transmitted among dogs, Joy must be an only child. But she's ready and willing to give you as much love as an entire pack! Born in 2006, this smart, outgoing gal also loves to run and play. Everyone needs more joy in their life; how about bringing this Joy into yours? Don't live near us? You're in luck! Joy has a very generous supporter willing to pay to have her flown to her new home, anywhere in the US or Canada. Email adoptions@bestfriends.org or call 435-644-2001 ext 4223 for more information. As a part of our Single* pets adoption special, Joy is also available for free adoption! *Single pets do best as the only pet in the home.
