Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Husky Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Satellite Bch, FL
Posted Breed: Husky / Australian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Jennifer (mustloveshelterdogs@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. King was rescued from the shelter when one of our members fell in love with him. King is a 7 yr old possible husky and Australian shepherd mix. He currently lives with another dogs and multiple cats. He does great with a dog who can play with him. He has never harmed a cat, however he does try to herd them and can chase them from time to time, so we feel it is best that he go to a home without cats. King initially had separation anxiety, but quickly overcame that. He sleeps in bed, or on the floor by the bed (if he gets too hot). He's overly affectionate, and will form an extreme bond with one person. King will greet you at the door, even if you leave for 2 minutes, and let you know how much you were missed and loved. He is a smart dog, but will need some work on training. King came from the shelter petrified of a leash and we are working on this, however he still doesn't walk well on a leash. King is an active dog, and needs daily running around time, whether a big yard or long walks etc.. King is fixed, vaccinated, tested for heartworm, and is microchipped.
