Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE BIO BEFORE CONSIDERING TRAJAN. TRAJAN CAME FROM A HOARDING CASE AND HAS VERY SPECIAL NEEDS. Hi Everyone! My adoption fee has been reduced to $100! My awesome caretakers at the shelter say I have been here way too long. They are hoping this will help me find my furever family. Please fill out an application to adopt me today! Trajan was taken in by Furkids with a group of dogs as part of a hoarding case. Television has brought animal hoarding into our living rooms, but until you have spent time with the victims of hoarding, in this case the dogs, you have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Trajan was born into a severely overcrowded situation. He never received the critical early socialization with humans. He was, in effect, raised solely by other dogs. Trajan is terrified of humans. He is not shy; he is terrified! Growing up in a hoard, Trajan has been well socialized with dogs and played well with other small dogs and cats when he was in a foster home. Trajan has a long way to go in learning to trust humans. He desperately needs an adopter who is experienced with very fearful or unsocialized dogs. Time and patience are the two things that will help Trajan learn to trust. Break his trust and take five giant steps back. This process cannot be rushed. Trajan will move forward in his own time. If you have the skills to help this frightened little fellow, please give him a chance. Update from the shelter: He hovers, sometimes gives a little lick to the hand, tugs at my hair if he can get a little grasp with his teeth, even tugged at my shirt one day, just to play!! He too loves treats, but is quirky about drinking water out of a bowl. He does a little dance around it and will take a sip or two then back away and go again. He again needs a patient adopter who will go slow and let him get acclimated to his surroundings. He has improved since he was first brought into the shelter. He didn't move out from under the desk at all if someone was in there. He too gets along with other dogs, as a matter of fact I think having another dog in the home would be a good thing for him. Trajan’s estimated birthdate is 10/1/2014. If you want to know more about Beast and to speak to an Adoption Counselor, please complete an application at https://furkids.org/dog-adoptions/application. Must be at least 21 years of age to apply. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/furkidsinc.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi Everyone! My adoption fee has been reduced to $100! My awesome caretakers at the shelter say I have been here way too long. They are hoping this will help me find my furever family. Please fill out an application to adopt me today!Katie, is finding life to be quite sweet! Katie is a sweet, timid, loving little girl who was picked up as a terrified stray. Her foster mom says she would be perfect for a patient, loving, quiet household where she can be given the time she needs to bond and approach you. Katie has some real pluses for someone who wants a low-maintenance dog that is fully house trained, never barks, doesn’t jump on people, rides well in the back of a car, walks well on the leash (although sometimes jumps at sudden noises), and loves to simply be in the room or sit quietly on the sofa or foot of the bed with her caretaker. Katie doesn’t play much with toys or people. But once she builds trust with her care-taker, she will sit quietly by your side, looking at you with her big brown eyes, and enjoy having her belly, chest and backside rubbed. Katie does not like to be approached but will come to you on her terms. She always wants to be in the room with you. Katie scares easily and needs time to become comfortable with new surroundings. Keeping a light nylon leash on her allows her care-taker to get hold of her for walks, which she seems to enjoy. Passing other people and most other dogs doesn’t bother her at all. When guests come to the house, she circles around them, always curious and eventually settles under the dining room table or nearby. Katie loves the security and comfort of her crate at night but also enjoys sitting at the foot of your bed in the morning to be close. Katie will do well with a loving, patient adopter who gives her the time and space to trust and love. Ultimately, Katie will be a loving, loyal dog, given some time and space. Her sweetness is readily apparent to all who meet her. She is eager to be loved and give love in return. Katie weighs 40 lbs. and her estimated birthdate is 8/14/2014. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). L.L.Bean (“Bean”) was picked up as a stray and probably had a rough time out there, but he is ready to start learning to trust humans again. He will sniff you, but he needs you to be patient and to allow him to come up to you on his own. The more time you spend with Bean, the faster your friendship will grow. Bean is living in a foster home right now and receiving the training that he lacked since he was a puppy. He is a smart boy, likes other dogs and chewing on soft toys and antlers. Bean walks on a leash well and likes meeting other people. He knows several commands including SIT, DOWN, LEAVE IT, ad COME. Oh and do you want to see a cute “happy dance” from Bean, then just wait for dinner time and watch this boy spin!!! Oh and in case you were wondering, Bean is housebroken as well. This adorable little guy is ready to become someone’s best friend, faithful companion, and all around good dog. Bean would like a fenced yard and maybe even another dog companion. L.L.Bean weighs 35 lbs. and his estimated birthdate is 1/7/2015. His adoption fee is $275 [senior citizens (age 62 and older) and military personnel receive a 15% discount on adoption fees]. If you want to know more about L.L.Bean and to speak to an Adoption Counselor, please complete an application at https://furkids.org/dog-adoptions/application. Location: Alpharetta, GA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). I HAVE EXCITING NEWS! MY ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN FULLY SPONSORED. THAT MEANS THAT MY ADOPTION FEE IS $0 TO A QUALIFIED APPLICANT. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? APPLY TO ADOPT ME! Hello folks, my name is Gus and I was a Griffin Mud Dog until the wonderful people at Furkids saved me. If you don’t know about what happened to me and all the other dogs in that situation, well you’re lucky cause I wish I didn’t either. My old owners had way too many of us and kept us in mud filled, caged pits on their property. Some days, I just wanted to give up especially when some of the other guys that were stuck there kinda lost their minds and attacked me. They tore me up real bad and I figured that was the end. I’m not good at fighting. I’m more of a lover. But just when I thought I’d never get out of that nightmare, some awesome people stepped in and got me to the shelter. It was so nice to be clean for the first time in my life and to have all of my injuries taken care of. Believe it or not, after all the stuff I’ve been through, I still really like humans. I don’t exactly hate other dogs but I’d really rather be the only one in the house. I actually spent some time in a real home for a while and learned how much I love to lay around and nap. Also how much I love to cuddle. I never even knew you could do that with someone. That’s probably also why I really only like older kids over 12 or so because they tend to understand that I don’t enjoy wild, loud behavior. I’ve had enough of that in my life. When I came to Furkids, I had heartworms but I went through the treatment and came out 100% negative on the other side. During that time, I could only be leash walked and the folks at the shelter were amazed at what a wonderful walking companion I turned out to be after having not a lick of training. I’m just a happy fella and all I want is to be loved and treated with kindness. I promise, if you give me a chance, I’ll be the best friend you ever had. My adoption fee is 100% sponsored, all I need now is for you to bring me home. Gus weighs 60 lbs. and his estimated birthdate is 8/4/2010. If you want to know more about Gus and to speak to an Adoption Counselor, please complete an application at https://furkids.org/dog-adoptions/application. Must be at least 21 years of age to apply. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Shar Pei / Mixed (short coat). PRINCESS HAS GOOD NEWS! HER ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN 100% SPONSORED BY A FAN OF HERS! THAT MEANS HER FEE IS $0 TO A QUALIFIED APPLICANT. Princess has been patiently waiting for her forever castle. Moats are optional, although Princess does enjoy a refreshing swim once in a while (go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua2Ee3TKkzI). A patch of grass would be a welcome addition. At 70 lbs., Princess appreciates a good back scratching roll. Princess has the impeccable manners you would expect from a royal. She responds to basic commands, walks nicely on lead and looks good in a tiara. Not surprisingly, Princess is a tennis fan. She would rather watch it on the tube with you than sit in the Royal Box at Wimbledon. She is learning the ins and outs of baseball and American football. Give her a spot on the sofa and her own bowl of popcorn and Princess will follow your favorite sports all season long. Princess is affectionate and devoted to her humans. She is happy to accompany you on a stroll or spend the afternoon lazing about the house. Princess makes few demands on her humans but she does insist on being the only furkid in the home. If you can commit to keeping only one furkid in your castle, come adopt this very loving and affectionate Princess! Update: Princess was recently taken to a volunteer's school to visit a kindergarten class. Princess did very well with them. So this doggy is definitely good for kids!!! I have two humans and two other dogs that I’m staying with, and they're teaching me how to be a dog and trust humans. I love getting treats, playing in the back yard, going to the dog park, hiking, and car rides. I’m housebroken and crate-trained and know commands like COME, SIT, and GO LAY DOWN. My foster family thinks I'm very smart. I have been to the dog park several times and on a hike and my foster family thinks I am very good on a leash. In the evening I'm pretty chill, just curling up by the humans. I'm very good with other dogs of all sizes and also with cats. I’d really like to go to a forever home that has another dog because I'm not done learning. I also need a fenced in yard to play in -- this is pretty important because I can get scared and might run. I’m a playful young girl and I have so much love to give. If you think you have the willingness to be my hero, then please set up a time to meet me." My name’s Bishop and I consider myself really super lucky to be a Furkid because Furkids rescued me from a high kill animal facility after seeing what a sweet guy I am. I love to run around in a fenced-in yard, chase balls and have a great time playing with other dogs. In addition to dogs, I like grown-up persons the best. Maybe you need a partner for your morning runs. I could totally fill that bill! Maybe you’d like a dog that isn’t jammed up in your face every five seconds begging for attention. That’s me! I’m pretty self-sufficient. That’s not to say that once we’ve made a connection that I wouldn’t enjoy having a good ear scratching - quite the contrary! I get really attached to those who give me a chance to get to know them" Bishop has so much fun playing with other dogs that he has been allowed to stay at a local boarding and daycare facility, BarkTown Atlanta in Norcross, GA. He is getting a lot of attention at BarkTown Atlanta and you can visit with him there seven days a week. His foster family is working on his leash manners, as he never misses a cat, squirrel or chipmunk and would definitely follow them right up the tree if he could. In his last home, Baxter was potty trained, but did not like being crated at all. Baxter is a very sweet dog, very friendly, loves people, dogs and children. Baxter's ideal environment would have a fenced in backyard and a companion dog for Baxter to play with because he absolutely LOVES the company of other dogs. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). How ChiChi came to be out on her own is anyone’s guess, but we are glad that someone took time to rescue her. ChiChi no longer has to hunt for food or for safe places to sleep at night. What she has to hunt for now is a forever home, and Furkids is helping her in that search. ChiChi is living in a foster home and gets along just fine with the other dogs in the home (it’s assumed that she gets along with cats, too, because she really doesn’t care about them in the foster home). ChiChi walks well on a leash and enjoys going outside for walks. She’s a sweet girl, but she takes her time to get to know new people. She’ll bond to one or two people whom she trusts, and once that bond has formed, she is super loyal and loving to “her person.” In her foster home, ChiChi is quiet and sleeps most of the day - that is when she’s not running behind you like a little shadow! She loves treats and does a silly dance whenever you get out food or treats. ChiChi also loves to sleep in her person’s bed and she makes a wonderful cuddle buddy. You see, 40-lb. Little Boy was one of several dogs Furkids saved from wretched outdoor living conditions. The dogs came to be known as the Griffin Mud Dogs. Little Boy started his journey in a foster home with a stable dog showing him the ropes and giving him the confidence needed to venture outside the crate. Little Boy gets along fine with dogs, large and small, and really needs a doggy companion to continue guiding him in his forever home. He is fine with older kids but younger children make him uneasy. He is bashful with visitors but once they settle in, he will follow the lead of the resident dog and come out to greet them. He is unsure about the feel of human hands but is generous with doggie kisses. The outside world is still a scary place for him and he is working on becoming comfortable on a leash. Little Boy is a courageous dog and is working hard to please his humans and adjust to their world. The security of a forever home without young children and with a patient adopter and a confident dog to guide him is what Little Boy needs now. Make a huge difference in the life of a dog who is long overdue for a lucky break. Adopt Little Boy.
