Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Sawyer was a puppy mill release. Guessed at about 3 years old and he weighs 13 lbs. He is shy but making progress in his foster home. He will need a more experienced home and is not for the first time dog owner. He is not house trained but is working on crate training and house training will come with patience and consistency. A belly band helps too. No small children please! He gets along well with the other small dogs but does need to be separated at meal time. He will need a fenced yard or someone committed to keeping him safe with harness and leash walks. No tieing these mill dogs out unattended as it isn't safe. He has now been fully vetted, had a dental, cherry eye repair, neuter, all vaccines, heart worm test and micro-chip. E-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for more information or an application. He is being fostered in the Grundy Center Ia area.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Malcomb

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Malcomb was found stray in really bad shape. He only weighed 56 lbs and was scavenging in garbage. We soon discovered he has stage 2 kidney disease and is virtually deaf. He has done well on a special diet and is up over 70 lbs now. He will need a special home that can keep up with his medical care, a fenced yard, and someone who is home to let him out alot. He is a sweet, gentle boy, guessed at about 11 years old who has obviously had a very hard life. Now neutered, fully vetted and micro-chipped. e-mail is ALWAYS the first step for more information or an application.

      Alexzander

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Alexzander came to us from another shelter. Apparently he was adopted out as a puppy and then this spring found stray, emaciated and covered in fleas. His owners were contacted and said they 'didn't really like him' but would come for him and fortunately never did. He is a big boy at 70 lbs now, and has a longer, wavy coat so may have some Collie or Shepherd in him somewhere? He is 12 years old and has some normal age related issues but overall is in good health and very active yet for an older guy. He will play catch and fetch until he drops, loves to go for walks and rides in the car and is a sweet gentleman. He would love a fenced yard to play fetch in and needs a home without many stairs. Should be fine with other friendly dogs, pays no attention to cats and would do great with older kids who would play fetch with him :) E-mail is ALWAYS the first step for more information or an application.

      Graham

      rescue
      Breed: Shih Tzu-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Graham was at an animal control unit and was very scared. He got startled and bit someone so was not going to be placed up for adoption. We pulled him to save his life and so far he has shown no aggressive tendencies but we are saying no small kids and a quieter home will be the best fit for him. Under 10 lbs and about 5 years old he has now been neutered, fully vetted, all vaccines, heartworm tested and micro-chipped. Fenced yard required. He does pretty well with other pets and especially likes cats but does not like dogs bigger than he is. Mostly house trained if let out regularly. Lifetime homes only please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com for an application. He is in a foster home near Grundy Center Ia

      Jenny

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jenny has waited far too long for her forever commitment and it is starting to wear on her. On the plus side...House trained, perfect size, great house manners, walks well on a leash and has good recall off leash. Loyal, affectionate and protective, this is a great dog for the RIGHT home! And she loves water..and the mud it makes too! On the minus side she is not good with new dogs but will make up with a proper introduction and time, and she needs an experienced adult only home where she isn't allowed to run the show. She will need someone who is willing to visit her several times to get to know her prior to adoption. Happy once she bonds with you, and active, she always appears to be smiling but she is getting sad at the shelter and NEEDS her own home. One that will stick by her thru thick and thin. Spayed and fully vetted, e-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for more information or an application. Please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com directly and don't use the auto response...thanks!

      Finn

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Finn is a puppymill reject, too old to 'produce' anymore. Guessed between 8 and 10 years old and is about 10 lbs. He lost most of his teeth in his recent dental so his tongue hangs out (pretty cute actually). He is not house trained but tolerates a belly band well. Gets along well with the other little dogs but they do all have to be separated at meal time. He is pretty friendly and social considering his past. Likes to cuddle and give kisses. No small children please! He will either need a fenced yard or someone committed to harness and leash walks to keep him safe. No tie outs! He doesn't really need or want much exercise. He is now of course neutered, fully vetted, all vaccines, heartworm tested and micro-chipped. E-mail is ALWAYS our first contact for an application or more information. He is being fostered in the Grundy Center Ia area. Please e-mail ameow2002@yahoo.com directly and don't use the auto response...thanks!

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Isabelle was transferred from another shelter and is now in a foster home. She is just in and we are getting to know her. Her previous owners surrendered her as they say they didn't have time for her? 13 years young, she doesn't require much and should be a pretty easy keeper. She has been around other dogs and should be fine with others who are friendly and stay out of her business but as always a proper introduction is required. Cats are unknown. Small children make her nervous and an adult only home would be best. A fenced yard is preferred to keep her safe. She is fully vetted. Indoor only, forever home wanted. verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (medium coat). Kristella originally came to us as a retired breeder in 2008 and was promptly adopted. She had a great life for many years until her 'Mom' died in 2015 which we were unaware of and none of the 3 grown children could be bothered to care for her. Apparently she got passed around and recently ended up somehow in Illinois at an animal control where her micro-chip led her back to us. She is 14 now and we have gotten her current once again current on her vetting, including a much needed dental. Stella is a bigger Yorkie and very sweet, altho a little shy and a home with small kids would be too much for her. She is currently being fostered with other small dogs and cats and gets along fine. She is not reliably house trained but will use potty pads. She would prefer a securely fenced yard. E-mail is ALWAYS the first step for more info or an application.
