Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 150.00. Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. Buster doesn't understand why he has been at his foster home for almost 2 years. His foster mom loves him but knows he deserves a home to call his own. He came to us in 2014 from a shelter in the southern part of the state. He is a good, sweet, very smart boy that really likes to play and gets along great with the other dogs in his foster home. We believe he is possibly a heeler chihuahua mix and he is about 12lbs. He loves a yard to play and run in and would do best with a fenced yard. He is house trained and crate trained. Buster has been neutered, wormed and flea treated. If you would like to make this cutie part of your family please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org, his adoption fee is 150.00 For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Pet Helpers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foster based volunteer rescue located in Fairmont, WV. We do adopt out of state to approved applicants, if you are willing to drive to WV to pick up your pet. We do not fly or use transport companies. Our adoption fee is $150.00 for mixed breed puppies and adult dogs, $225.00 for full blooded puppies and adult dogs and $50.00 for cats and kittens. Regardless if the animal is a mixed breed or full blooded they are spayed/neutered prior to adoption IF they are old enough. If they are too young at the time of adoption, then it is your financial responsibility to spay/neuter the pet by the age of 6 months and you must provide proof for our files that it has been done. All of our pets are checked by a vet, given the shots appropriate for their age and any other treatment deemed necessary by the vet. All of our pets are adopted as indoor pets and are not be outdoors tied to a box 24/7. The pet you are adopting has been living in a home with a foster family. You are expected to take possession of the pet you are applying for within a few days of application approval. This will enable us to accept another pet into that home. Because we are a rescue, and believe that spaying and neutering is crucial in stopping the reproduction of unwanted puppies/kittens and massive amounts of animals dying daily in shelters across the country, we expect any animal already in your home to be spayed/neutered. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. This is Mya, one of our special needs/medical cases. Mya was adopted as a pup from us about 3-1/2 years ago. In March 2016 she suffered a severe herniated disk in her spine. Her adoptive family didn't think they could handle the issues involved with surgery and potential physical therapy that might be required, so Mya came back to us. She underwent surgery but hasn't yet fully regained the use of her hindquarters. Therefore, Mya has been attending physical therapy once a week to enable her to be able to walk independently where she receives laser therapy and stretching, manual nerve stimulation of her paws/pads, has to walk/lift her feet over 4" high bars, do figure-eights around cones for balance, stretch and stand on 2 legs, then underwater treadmill for 3 sets of 4 minutes each. Mya does not have bowel/bladder control, so wears a diaper. She often lifts her hindquarters, assumes a wide stance and walks/runs now ! She currently weighs about 30 pounds which is just about a perfect weight for her. We believe she is a Basset hound/Dachshund mix. Mya is full of love and life and would dearly love to have her own family once again. She is fostered in Fairmont, WV. If you are that special kind of person that would continue to help Mya become independently mobile while sharing your life with her, please complete an adoption application at https://www.pethelpersinc.org/adoption-application/ For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Duke came to us several months ago weighing only 33 pounds...he now weighs between 50-55 pounds. After a few false starts, we finally discovered Duke has an abnormally small liver making it difficult for his body to process proteins in his diet. Therefore, Duke must eat a specially formulated food and take a liver supplement daily for the rest of his life; cost is approximately $150.00 per month. As you can see, he is full of energy and plays like a pup, he has that wonderful boxer body wiggle often. He loves to snuggle up to his human and sleep with his head right next to yours...he is a true sweetheart. Duke loves everyone, both 2 and 4 legged. He is fostered in Fairmont, WV, adoption fee has been sponsored. If you would like more information please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. I could tell you a long story about how I ended up being a foster dog but it really doesn't matter the important thing is that someone felt I deserved a chance to live with a new family for the time I have left. But hey don't count the days till my departure yet I am a young 12. Yeah I have a few old man issues......my bladder isn't what it used to be but that doesn't mean I have accidents....unless you sleep through my need to go. But I do tell you I need to go!! I still like a good romp session.......I can show you how to play get my hoof chew from me if you can.......but if you don't feel like playing thats ok I like to play throw it for myself. I like to lay outside on nice days, I like naps in the big people bed, I like shopping at Lowe's or any place that lets dogs in, I like walks when it is cool, I like my foster mom and I will like you too if you give me a chance. I am neutered, vaccinated, been wormed and flea treated. I weigh 87 lbs but probably need to lose a few pounds so maybe we could work on that together. My adoption fee is $75. Sweet shy Harlow was found living on her own with a couple other dogs. We don't believe they had much socialization with humans but she's doing so wonderful in her foster home. She was very shy at first, but once she warmed up what a sweet girl she is. We think Harlow is a bulldog beagle mix but that is just a guess. She's got the cutest underbite and is learnig to give kisses. We are pretty sure she is under 2 years old she weighs approximately 45 lb, is spay, utd on shots, flea treated and wormed. She loves nothing more than a good romp with the younger dogs in her foster home. She is Crate trained and seems to be house broke. Harlow would do great in a home with another dog to play with and a fenced-in yard is preferred because she does love to run and play in the yard. She is fine with cats it would probably be best in a home without any because she is pretty curious. She is being fostered in Clarksburg, WV. Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. ~~ Ava is a 2 year old Rottie mix who was an unclaimed stray. We believe she has been an outside dog but picked up the crate training and house training really fast. She is around 40-45 pounds, vaccinated, spayed, wormed and flea treated. She has learned to sit in just a couple of sessions so she will be easily trained if you take time to work with her. She is a little high energy at times so she will likely do best with an active family who can give her plenty of exercise. Ava is used to a fenced yard so she still needs some leash work. Ava would love to have a running partner or someone who likes to hike. She loves to run but also likes to snuggle once her energy is burned off. Ava would prefer to be an only dog so she can have all of the attention but she does well with non-dominant similar sized dogs if given time to adjust. Ava is fostered in Fairmont, WV, adoption fee is $150. If you would like more information please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Beautiful , shy and playful....that would be this girl! Wendy is a little shy at first but once she opens up she's just the most amazing girl ever. Wendy more than anything loves to play with other dogs. She is becoming very bonded with one of the other Foster dogs in her foster home so a loving home with another dog is a must. She weighs approximately 40 pounds and guessing between 2 and 3 years old. A fenced-in yard is also necessary for this girl because she does love to r un and play. She does not particularly care for the leash but is doing better. She's doing wonderful with the house breaking not to say she could not have an accident or two but she's doing very very well and is crate trained. Wendy is spay and will be up to date on shots in the next couple days she will also be microchipped, flea treated and wormed. Her adoption fees $150 and she is being fostered in Clarksburg West Virginia If you would like more information please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Posted Breed: Beagle / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 150.00. Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. A home of my own for Christmas...that's my wish. My name is Daenerys (Daeny for short) and I am a Beagle/Pit mix about 4 years old weighing 45 pounds. I came to Pet Helpers with my 6 surviving pups and 2 other adult dogs that were my pack. I am an alpha female and it was my responsibility to bring them back food if I could find it and protect them. Some really nice folks followed me home one night and made it possible for ALL of us to be rescued. My puppies have all been adopted into wonderful homes and now it's my turn to find my Forever Family. I've been spayed, microchipped, updated on vaccines and tested negative for heartworm and Lyme. I'm house trained and crate trained, but I really don't need a crate...I'm a pretty laid back kind of gal. I do really well with the other foster dogs in my temporary home, but when I meet a new dog I have to be introduced properly and spend some time with them to feel comfortable. I don't like cats, I'll be perfectly honest with you. I love kids and adults though and love to give kisses. I'm easy to leash walk and I really like car rides. If you could please open your heart and home to me, I promise to be loyal and loving. I am fostered in Fairmont, WV, and my adoption fee is $150.00.
