Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Ziggy is available at the San Martin Animal Shelter. For more information, please contact the Shelter Staff all (408) 686-3900 or for detailed info contact my foster parents below. Hi, I'm Ziggy. Are you looking for a unique and mellow companion who will snuggle with you all day long? That's me. I'm a 6 year old male Chihuahua mix. I'm a huge love-bug and big kisser. My story is a litte sad, but I don't let it get me down. I was found in a box by the side of the road barely conscious. No one expected me to live, but that was before they knew me and knew what a trooper I am! I spent a week in the hospital and week in a wheelchair, and now I'm up and running. I'm not big on long walks because I'm still a little unstable but I can explore the yard like a pro. When I get excited I make cute noises that sounds like a dolphin talking. I'm housebroken and am a very polite roommate! I'm a great sleeper and will sleep all night long in my bed, preferably next to your bed! I am good about playing with my own toys (soft stuffies are my favorite!) I am always on my best behavior except when it comes to cats, but that's still pretty close to perfect! I can't wait to meet my new family! If that could be you, please contact Jeri @ (408) 686-3909 or Roxanne @ (408) 921-7211. I am currently living in a foster home and am not on site, but I am only a phone call away!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

We are happy to introduce our new #PetOfTheWeek ... Chevy! Chevy was found early one morning by one of our staff members. It appeared to us right away someone had dumped him at our shelter and left. He had an obvious injured leg that someone had attempted to "self treat" with 2 pieces of broken wood chips and some tape. While it was clear someone tried to make him more comfortable, sadly it only affected him more because on the inside of the leg his bone was protruding through the skin and rubbing on the splinted wood scrap. Despite the pain he was in and the confusion of the new environment he was very open and welcoming to the staff when the knelt down and called him over. He was then rushed to our veterinarian who was quick to remove the wood chips and tape, get him in for x-rays and quickly splint the leg properly to ensure the most ideal comfort for Chevy. When our veterinarian felt comfortable moving forward with treatment, she decided it was best for Chevy to have his leg amputated. Since this operation, Chevy has been doing extremely well and has become such a happy and social dog. He absolutely loves following "his people" around. Chevy is now ready to find his forever home during our #HomeForTheHolidays promotion!! If you are interested in meeting this sweet boy please feel free to come meet him during our open hours of Monday - Friday 12 to 6 pm and Saturday - Sunday 12 to 5 pm.

Hi, my name is Gwen I am the life of the party! I have a huge smile that will light up any room and I love to play, but in moderation. If you throw the ball for me, I will be your best friend! Of course, I have a cuddly side also and I am a great snuggler, if you take the time to get to know me. Despite my large size, I am sensitive, sweet girl. I am easily managed around other dogs, but I prefer to have my humans all to myself and to be as devoted as I can be. If you invest your time and energy in me, I promise to repay the favor tenfold! Gwen's short coat is easy to manage. She needs a responsible person committed to the care, training and exercise of their dog to take her home and make her their own. A German Shepherd mix has a people loving nature. Training and lots of love and attention will have Gwen being a terrific loyal pet to the deserving owner that is willing to make the commitment to her. It will be one of the most reward actions of your life, trust me. If you would like to meet Gwen, you can visit her 7 days a week at the San Martin Animal Shelter.
