If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He was rescued on what was to be his last day of life at Jefferson County Missouri Animal Control. They had him listed as people aggressive, but upon our observations we found that he is a typical Chihuahua type dog, and you have to bring more than just you to win him over, he prefers Beggin' strip bribes. Once you make friends he is a bundle of playful, adorable little buddy personality. He is a nice dog who was nearly passed over by everyone because no one tried to figure out what breed he was and if his behavior was typical of that breed. Rango weighs just under 11 lbs. He is house trained, and well mannered in the home. Please help us make room to save more homeless pets!!! He had a family, but then they had kids, and he was not properly socialized around children before the family decided to have them so he did not do well. He is afraid here, but sweet after a treat or two. He is house trained, and would do best in a home with adults only. Hope Rescues is all volunteer, all visits must be scheduled you may do that by filling out an online application as that is needed for a visit. You can find an application our website. Our adoption fee is $225.00 which includes all vetting. August is a 1 year old female Pit Bull Terrier mix who weighs about 42 lbs. She was rescued on her last day of life at animal control where she had been so long in her own pee that her feet were burnt and had to be treated by the vet so that they could heal. She could barely walk when we got her but now she can run and play like a normal young pup should. She likes all people, some dogs, but no cats at all. All she wants to do is give kisses, we are trying to teach her that not everyone wants her to kiss them, but so far it is falling on deaf ears. She is crate trained but we have not had her in a home to see how well she will do there with her house training. Many of the dogs we rescue are house trained to begin with, but we want to make sure we are honest about her not being in a home to verify that. August is a great dog with a great personality and we hope that she finds a wonderful home. Please help us make room to save more homeless pets!!! She was picked up as a stray running the streets nearly starved in the dead of winter. We think she is a pitbull mix, maybe Beagle and Pitbull. She is very loving and gentle. All she wants is to snuggle up to you and get a belly rub. We have tried her with a few other dogs and she does pretty good once you get through the initial meeting. She is really pretty. A couple weeks after rescue she gave birth to 10 puppies, those puppies were not born healthy thanks to everything mommy had been through and four passed away.Today Terry is a VERY healthy, treat sitting fool! Everyone she catches a glimpse of might have a treat so she follows everyone until they notice her at which time she sits all pretty just like in this picture.Terry does not do well with female dogs, nor cats, or small dogs of any sex.She needs a home where she can be the only dog, and have an endless supply of treats. Please help us make room to save more homeless pets!!! Her owner was not responsible and did not teach her any manners at all. She had gotten into trouble for running at large several times because her owner would never leash her, nor did he have a fenced yard to let her out in, so he just let her out.Well you can imagine the havoc she caused being 78 lbs and running at large with no manners. She has been with us now for a couple months and has learned how to walk on leash, sit, shake, along with some other basic manners that she really did need. Now she is a nice dog and understand more how to act around people and not jump all crazy on you. This girl is really pretty in person with the most beautiful color coat and eyes.Just a sweetie in nature that someone just didn't teach well. Please help us make room to save more homeless pets!!!
