Posted Breed: Husky / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). I'm One of the Tanner Collection! Our friends in a Tennessee shelter were bursting at the seems with dogs and begging us to visit again so no one had to die just because of overcrowding. We said we were sorry, but didn't have the room right then. We were all very happy that the next week was a wonderful adoption week and so the trip was planned! Denise and Cheryl left here at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday for a whirlwind trip managing to save the lives of 12 dogs, 2 adorable 5 week old shepherd pups and two gorgeous kittens! Everyone was a bit weary when they arrived here at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, but soon their confused eyes softened into a look of understanding. The lucky 16 will have the last name of Tanner and we are eternally grateful to Christine, a supporter and volunteer as she sponsored this trip south. Tanner is Christine's canine companion and we are told he is very spoiled. Every time Christine goes home from volunteering she tells him how lucky he is and she says this is his way of paying it forward. The two nameless pups are Drew and Brook, named after Christine's niece and nephew. Thank you Christine! Chewbacca Tanner was born about January 14, 2009 (we wonder if a bit older) and weighs about 80 lbs. How could we leave her behind? Well, we couldn't once we saw photos of her out for show and tells in the community. What a ham she was acting cute and funny like a silly pup. This girl surely knows how pretty she is! Chewy does have some rear end weakness and will benefit from a diet and supplements such as glucosamine and condroiten (sp?), but she has become stronger and healthier with us and some good food and care. She's very good with the other dogs, but has too much interest in cats to live with any. Chewy is a shelter favorite, we all love her very much, but she needs her own home and own family. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $200.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption. Can't Adopt Me? If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Akita-Chow Chow Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chow Chow / Akita / Mixed (long coat). Found Just Over The Hill. Kuda was born about December 12, 2011 and weighs about 75 lbs. He's a beauty with all that lush, thick, fur! You've got to be the home that doesn't mind dog fur everywhere - and he does not like to be groomed. Kuda was found just over the hill from us and, sadly, no one came to claim him. He did fine on the car ride here. He does well in the pack with the other dogs, but shows minimal interest with cats. We don't feel a home with small children is appropriate. Most Chows are relatively calm and highly devoted to their humans, but aloof with strangers. He may need a little bit to acclimate to his new home and adore his new humans. Update: We need to mention that his previous owners did appear a little later and were unable to claim him. There was no documentation, but they felt his age would have made his year of birth 2006, our vet and we are struggling with that as our guess was much younger. Kuda does still play with toys! FOSTER UPDATE: Kuda is full of personality, for sure! He definitely does not like to be groomed (brushing or nails) - and gets a little testy if forced. He loves to ride in cars, does well on leash, and is extremely devoted to his humans. Occasionally Kuda will play with the younger dogs in the house and loves to chew on bones. Kuda needs a larger fenced yard and will not do well on a tie out. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $150.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). I Am One of the Max Collection! Joyful Rescues has welcomed 28 dogs and 3 cats all to be known as the "MAX" collection, from a kill shelter in Tennessee thanks to a generous donation sponsoring the transport by MICHELLE ALESSI of Amherst, NY. Michelle chose the name in honor of her dearly departed dog, Max who Michelle referred to as "a crusty marshmallow" a little grumpy, but a sweet mush on the inside! Still, he was dearly loved by Michelle and her late mother who now keeps watch, with Max, over Michelle and her dogs, Cleo and special needs, Gizzie. Michelle has a deep compassion for animals, especially those who are in their senior years, handicapped, or special needs. Her one request in sponsoring this transport was that we would pull at least one animal who seemed a bit of an "underdog"; so Katie pulled two! One is a dog with a deformed leg; the other a tri-pod cat with an abnormal eye. Thank you, Michelle, for helping us save so many more lives! Tabitha was born about April 1, 2013 and weighs about 60 lbs. She is absolutely adorable and has been very good with all of us, but terribly shy at first. She is good with other dogs, fine in the car and on leash. This gorgeous girl has been tossed away and will be so thankful for a new home where she will be cherished! She was left at a shelter when her babies were two days old, guess she became an inconvenience. She was terrified for herself and her infants when we loaded them up to come here just a couple of days later. She was a very good Mom, surmounted the stress and kept taking care of her babies who grew to be strong and healthy and now she is looking for a new home that will love her unconditionally! It is obvious that Tabitha has not always been treated well by humans and she is terrified of being touched by new humans and she is terrified of new places. She will take much time and effort to adjust to a new life, but she is a really wonderful, loving, girl once comfortable. Due to her fears she truly must have a fenced in yard. Tabitha is too interested in cats to live with any. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $175.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Posted Breed: Pekingese / Mixed (medium coat). Thank You Leaton Family for Saving Us. This transport is to honor my husband, Gary Leaton. He loved old westerns, detective shows and Buddy Rich. He started playing drums when he was 5 years old and he practiced almost every day of his life. He named one of his dogs Drummer and he thought of himself as” Drummer”. So -----the DRUMMER transport. Gary loved animals and donated to numerous animal rights organizations. He always felt he should be doing more to help abused or abandoned animals. He was very hard on himself because he couldn't save them all. He rescued the dog we had together when we got married, Master, from Lollipop Farm. When we lost Master to cancer, we got Logan from Joyful Rescues. Then 6 months later we added Haley to our family. They both enriched and added so much love and joy to our lives. We didn't know that Gary would have so little time with them. Just over a year with Logan and less with Haley. The only thing he wanted to do when he was in the hospital was come home to his “children” but it wasn't to be. Gary would be so proud to know that lives were being saved because of him." ~Laura Leaton Dale was born about November 2, 2008 and weighs about 12 lbs. She can be rather picky about her four legged friends and maybe would do best with one other small aloof dog or as an only dog. She adores her humans but we do not feel she should live with small children. We have no information on why she ended up at the high kill shelter, but she was a matted mess and just covered with fleas so now that she is healing and flea free her fur is growing back in and she'll be gorgeous again one day. She is happy, funny, and just loves to be loved. Someone is going to be very happy that she made this journey! This is all we know so far and we'll all be learning as we go. We do like to warn that many of these small dogs do benefit from having floor potty pads handy for when they just can't hold it. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $200.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Thank you Joyful Rescues for giving so many southern animals a 2nd chance! ~ Anonymous Heart Beat Watkins was born about March 27, 2015 and will fill out to about 40 lbs. She is wonderful with all of us and just perfect with all the other dogs. She came to us as a Lab mix, but we are struggling with that and feel strongly there may be some Plott Hound in there and also a touch of Pit. But, then there are those eyes, those gorgeous, expressive eyes! Whatever she is she is one great companion and someone is going to love her to pieces. Please understand that we have no prior knowledge of this dog, and we will be learning as we go and so will you. UPDATE: Heart Beat LOVES kids! Joyful rescues had a little girl come visit and Heart Beat couldn't wait to get her snuggles in. This pretty little girl came to us from a high kill shelter with 3 rolly polly dumplings of puppies! Monica must have had just an awful life until she came here. She was highly frightened of us humans, but once she saw how much her babies loved us she stopped running from us and we were able to touch her and then pet her and scratch all those favorite spots. She decided we were turning out to be pretty cool humans! Once she is moved again and when she is unfamiliar places and around unfamiliar humans she may regress again and will need some warm up time and be kept very safely confined until she decides she loves you as much as she loves us! She is BUSY and has stuff to do in life. This isn't a girl that is going to lounge around napping in a crate all day. She needs a fun dog and a safe place to race and race she does. If there are kids they need to be sturdy. Deciding on breed is difficult here, but we truly feel this girl may well be part (although shrunken) Greyhound (maybe Whippet) - she moves like one. Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Hey, Got a Tennis Ball? Dash was born about November 18, 2011 and weighs about 20 lbs. He is absolutely adorable and about a size bigger than a Min Pin should be so probably mixed with something but we couldn't hazard a guess. He also has a delightful personality that often isn't the case for Min Pins - so very thankful he is mixed! He is wonderful with all of us, not noisy (which we love) and wonderful with children. He blends in with the other dogs as if he has lived here all his life and we are very happy to have him and you are going to be very happy you found him! He is house trained, but pulls on leash and he is good in a car. He does, however, have a bit of wanderlust if he gets the chance so a fenced yard or being walked on leash will be necessary. He loves his tennis balls and his carrots and will curl up in a blanket so that he covers himself up! He will bark at strangers coming into your home and seems a bit protective so maybe a crate or another room will be necessary when letting humans into your home. He LOVES water. He's not perfect, but we really like him and know you will too. It was nice his owners (who were moving where he couldn't join them) gave us so much information. He does love his humans, very social and snuggley and he is good with kids. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $250.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). I Weigh a WHOLE Five Pounds! Kam was born March 22, 2005 and weighs 5 lbs. She is as cute as can be, but is a bit on the nippy side. She will need some work on house training because she came from a puppy mill where she's been popping out puppies for pet store shelves all her life. Also, Chihuahua's struggle with house training anyway and often require potty pads or maybe a litter box. She's a doll that deserves a wonderful new life if you have a little patience to send her way. Kam's foster mom says that she faithfully uses potty pads. She also LOVES other dogs and cats, and would do best with another dog. She is afraid of being on leash and is still afraid of people, but once warmed up she is a real love! Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $250.00. Can't Adopt Me?
