Posted Breed: Husky / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). I'm One of the Tanner Collection! Our friends in a Tennessee shelter were bursting at the seems with dogs and begging us to visit again so no one had to die just because of overcrowding. We said we were sorry, but didn't have the room right then. We were all very happy that the next week was a wonderful adoption week and so the trip was planned! Denise and Cheryl left here at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday for a whirlwind trip managing to save the lives of 12 dogs, 2 adorable 5 week old shepherd pups and two gorgeous kittens! Everyone was a bit weary when they arrived here at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, but soon their confused eyes softened into a look of understanding. The lucky 16 will have the last name of Tanner and we are eternally grateful to Christine, a supporter and volunteer as she sponsored this trip south. Tanner is Christine's canine companion and we are told he is very spoiled. Every time Christine goes home from volunteering she tells him how lucky he is and she says this is his way of paying it forward. The two nameless pups are Drew and Brook, named after Christine's niece and nephew. Thank you Christine! Chewbacca Tanner was born about January 14, 2009 (we wonder if a bit older) and weighs about 80 lbs. How could we leave her behind? Well, we couldn't once we saw photos of her out for show and tells in the community. What a ham she was acting cute and funny like a silly pup. This girl surely knows how pretty she is! Chewy does have some rear end weakness and will benefit from a diet and supplements such as glucosamine and condroiten (sp?), but she has become stronger and healthier with us and some good food and care. She's very good with the other dogs, but has too much interest in cats to live with any. Chewy is a shelter favorite, we all love her very much, but she needs her own home and own family. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $200.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption. Can't Adopt Me? If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

OK, so maybe he's not a German Shepherd mixed with Jack Russell, but LOOK at him! He is typical Jack in behavior! Bingo is very loving to us humans, but probably will do best as an only dog. He is FUNNY and FUN and ready for a whole new life! He is good on leash and loves car rides. He is a major snuggler and will adore his new humans. What a wonderful boy! This transport was sponsored by wonderful adopters, foster home, and long time volunteers the Gonska Family! We are so very thankful to them for all that they've done over the years to help with so many pets and they attend most every event graciously. In their quest to help ALL animals they have chosen not to eat them. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $150.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Anastasia is a snuggler and she ADORES water! She uses the doggie door with ease, but we like to let you know that with the next move and an adjustment to not having a dog door that you may have some house training work ahead. Anna, as we call her, adores her humans and she is wonderful with the other dogs. She is BUSY and has stuff to do in life. This isn't a girl that is going to lounge around napping in a crate all day. She needs a fun dog and a safe place to race and race she does. If there are kids they need to be sturdy. Deciding on breed is difficult here, but we truly feel this girl may well be part (although shrunken) Greyhound - she moves like one. This girl is possibly the smartest dog here! The Adoption Fee for this dog is $350.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). I Am One of the Max Collection! Joyful Rescues has welcomed 28 dogs and 3 cats all to be known as the "MAX" collection, from a kill shelter in Tennessee thanks to a generous donation sponsoring the transport by MICHELLE ALESSI of Amherst, NY. Michelle chose the name in honor of her dearly departed dog, Max who Michelle referred to as "a crusty marshmallow" a little grumpy, but a sweet mush on the inside! Still, he was dearly l oved by Michelle and her late mother who now keeps watch, with Max, over Michelle and her dogs, Cleo and special needs, Gizzie. Michelle has a deep compassion for animals, especially those who are in their senior years, handicapped, or special needs. Her one request in sponsoring this transport was that we would pull at least one animal who seemed a bit of an "underdog"; so Katie pulled two! One is a dog with a deformed leg; the other a tri-pod cat with an abnormal eye. Thank you, Michelle, for helping us save so many more lives! Tabitha was born about April 1, 2013 and weighs about 50 lbs. She is absolutely adorable and has been very good with all of us. She is good with other dogs, fine in the car and on leash. This gorgeous girl has been tossed away and will be so thankful for a new home where she will be cherished! She was left at a shelter when her babies were two days old, guess she became an inconvenience. She was terrified for herself and her infants when we loaded them up to come here just a couple of days later. She was a very good Mom, surmounted the stress and kept taking care of her babies who grew to be strong and healthy and now she is looking for a new home that will love her unconditionally! Tabitha is too interested in cats to live with any. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $275.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Location: Cuba, NY
Posted Breed: Hound / Foxhound / Mixed (short coat). Thank You Bonadio Group in Pittsford!!!!!! The Bonadio Group, 171 Sully's Trail, Pittsford, NY sponsored the transport that brought 40 dogs north out of a high kill pound in TN. How high kill???? Well, while Katie was busy making the very difficult choices she has to make down there, she accidentally entered the wrong door and there was Emma a healthy, young, medium sized, black girl who was on a table, tail just a wagging not minding that her arm was being shaved, while enjoying all the attention she was getting from a couple of the staff. Little did she realize that the needle that was now 2 inches from her arm was going to stop her heart from beating and her tail would never wag again. The procedure was STOPPED and Emma was immediately loaded in the truck! We also took George who was next in line because they couldn't afford to treat him and he was painfully thin. We are working on George and hope that it is only worms and we'll be able to make him better. He is one really sweet boy and we love him already. We also took a pretty, really sweet, Cocker named Sammy who has massive ear infections, one eye is turned rather inside out and the other looks odd so he will need some very special vet care, but we have him in the best foster home for the blind and he's happy as can be. There are 37 others with their own stories, but these are the three heart breakers so far. The staff at his shelter do the best they can and truly love these dogs but their resources are incredibly limited. Thank you Bonadio Group, an accounting, business and financial services firm providing audit, tax and business consulting services, for making this trip, which runs about $800.00, possible!!!!! All dogs from the south are heart worm tested, but they cannot be tested until they are about 6 months old. So, if you choose a puppy from this group you must keep that puppy on heart worm "preventative" at least through it's 7th month just in case it is carrying the larvae. As for Patches, he weighs about 60 lbs. and was born about May 30, 2010 and what a really nice boy he is! He is wonderful with other dogs and did fine on the ride here. He is not noisy and just really medium energy, he just seems to be thankful he is here. When patches arrived at the TN shelter he had an open wound on the top of his lower, front, leg and they thought they'd have to amputate, but thankfully they found a foster home for him to have some time to see if it would heal on it's own. So, not so thankfully, this foster home allowed him to be picked up running around on his own again and he ended up back at the shelter. The foster family never let them know he was missing and failed to return several messages - nice.... So, by this time he was healing nicely and now there is a scar, but he uses the leg just fine - lucky boy. This is all we know so far, we'll be learning as we go. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $250.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. She will need some work on house training because she came from a puppy mill where she's been popping out puppies for pet store shelves all her life. Also, Chihuahua's struggle with house training anyway and often require potty pads or maybe a litter box. She's a doll that deserves a wonderful new life if you have a little patience to send her way. Kam's foster mom says that she faithfully uses potty pads. She also LOVES other dogs and cats, and would do best with another dog. She is afraid of being on leash and is still afraid of people, but once warmed up she is a real love! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Saved on my last Week of Life! Cole was born about January 27, 2013 and weighs about 80 lbs. He is from a very remote southern area shelter. We were told that any dogs who've been there the longest without interest by adopters or other rescues after that weekend would likely be euthanized the following Tuesday. Cole is a black lab/pit mix who can be loving and goofy once he gets warmed up to you. Cole is in a foster home and crate-trained. He likes to carry things in his mouth and may “steal” things from time-to time. He plays fetch and will lean on you like a typical black lab. He is calm and content with the humans he loves but is better living in a quieter environment (not a lot of human traffic). However, he will never be the dog that you can take to ballgames or family picnics without significant rehabilitation work. He has a “stranger-danger” personality and is very skittish and nervous around anyone he is not familiar with. His social anxiety toward strangers and when placed in strange situations or environments has made it difficult for us to find just the right adopters for him. We are looking for an adopter local to the WNY area who has experience in dealing with fearful and anxious dogs. So he's not perfect, but he's a big goofy, scared-y cat kind of guy that needs the right home. Cole enjoys water and does wonderful with his other same size foster dog, but he is a little too rough for small children, small dogs and shouldn't live with a cat. She will need some warm up time as he is shy of humans until he is comfortable with them. He LOVES to play ball and is good about going in his crate. He is very food motivated so easy to train with treats. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $100.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Jenna has a playful spirit and is very athletic. She can play fetch all day so get your throwing arm ready. She has a very fun and energetic personality. Jenna needs an active family and large yard with running room to keep her happy. She has a very strong prey drive and can jump a 4 foot fence so a 6 foot secure fence will be necessary. She is very eager to please, responsive & food motivated. She received some initial obedience training at Canine Academy in Clarence giving her a great head start and we would love for her new parents to continue her obedience lessons to continue to work with her. Along with her eagerness comes a bit of lack of impulse control so continued obedience training will be very good for her. She arrived to Joyful Rescues from a high kill southern shelter and unfortunately appears to not have gotten a good upbringing in her formative years. Jenna will need to be the only pet in the house as she can be selective about who she likes and is resource protective around other dogs. Patience and tolerance at her new home will be important. If a barking dog bothers you then Jenna will not be a good fit. She has a bit of lack of impulse control so continued obedience training will be very good for her. She is quite wiggly and may knock smaller kids down, so a home with older kids would be better. She is initially a little nervous around new people and will submissive urinate, but is very affectionate once she has a bit of warm up time. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $100.00. He is sure a cute little thing that is short haired except he has this little bit of beard action going around his mouth. We are just going to get it out in the open here, he is one of "those" Chihuahuas that take warm up time to love you and will probably never be nice to strangers rushing him. Also, like so many of these tiny dogs he will benefit from having potty floor pads handy for those just in case moments. The tiny dogs just can't hold it that long. Now for the good stuff! He is good on leash and great with other dogs and cats alike. Bobby also loves to go for rides! He is here because someone without many resources to begin with lost their job and had to move where Bobby wasn't allowed. Bobby is doing well here, but would love his own humans and a home to call his very own - forever. Once he loves you he is MAJOR SNUGGLY! The Adoption Fee for this dog is $275.00. You've got to be the home that doesn't mind dog fur everywhere and are willing to brush him regularly. Kuda was found just over the hill from us and, sadly, no one came to claim him. He did fine on the car ride here and was fine in a crate. He does well in the pack with the other dogs, but is questionable with cats. We don't feel a home with small children is appropriate. Most Chows are relatively calm and highly devoted to their humans, but aloof with strangers. He may need a little bit to acclimate to his new home and adore his new humans. Update: We need to mention that his previous owners did appear a little later and were unable to claim him. There was no documentation, but they felt his age would have made his year of birth 2006, our vet and we are struggling with that as our guess was much younger. Kuda does still play with toys! She was highly frightened of us humans, but once she saw how much her babies loved us she stopped running from us and we were able to touch her and then pet her and scratch all those favorite spots. She decided we were turning out to be pretty cool humans! Once she is moved again and when she is unfamiliar places and around unfamiliar humans she may regress again and will need some warm up time and be kept very safely confined until she decides she loves you as much as she loves us! She is wonderful with the other dogs. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $275.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet.
