Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Hi, my name is Bo, and I'm a handsome adult shepherd-chow mix boy with a lot to offer my new forever family. I'm wary of strangers, but once I'm past my initial shyness, I'll be your new best friend - loyal, loving and affectionate. I'm good on a leash, have good house manners, house and crate trained and I get along with other dogs. My foster says I'm very playful with my foster sister – lots of tug of war sessions with toys every day. I love to chase squirrels, rabbits and kitties, so I would not be good in a family with cats. My perfect forever home would be with an experienced dog family that doesn't have small children and would be able to continue my socialization with strangers and new situations. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but the family would need to keep my weight down and my exercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $175. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed. Hi, I'm Mufasa, a baby terrier mix and aren't I the cutest thing you've seen??? I was born in early December, 2016 to Coco, who's also looking for her forever home. I'm the brown sweetie in the pictures. My sister Izzy is the black one. Since mom is only 5 pounds, we aren't expected to weigh much more than that, so I'll be small when I grow up. Since I'm so young you will need to be prepared to give me all the training that I will need, including house, crate, leash, and manners. If I turn out like my mom, I'll won't be a high activity dog, nor a slug, I'll be just right. You will need to supply me with lots of toys, especially chew toys since I'm a baby and will be going through that "chewing phase" that all puppies go through. Someone will need to be able to take me out often to help with my house training since a puppy just can't wait too long when it's "time to go". Please come see me at Petco, I'm so cute I'm sure there will be lots of people wanting to adopt me! Adopter for Mufasa must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Mufasa is $175.

      Monte

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Monte has a cream color coat and tan ears. He is a Chihuahua puppy whose birthday is estimated as 03/05/17. He and his sister Mollie were born outside and lived outside for the first 6 weeks of their lives. Their Mom was called the "neighborhood dog". Everyone liked her, but no one wanted to take the responsibility for taking care of her or her babies. One man in the neighborhood put together a make-shift shelter for them outside with old boards. But even with that, they had a hard life because during that time we had a lot of rain storms and cold weather. Its amazing that they are healthy, but they are. Monte is very active and energetic. He loves playing with his sister. He likes to play in the back yard and is always ready to investigate anything new that he finds. He is interested in the cats in his foster home and likes to follow them, but doesn't chase them. Since he lived outside, he really wants to go outside to go potty. Most of the time he can go all night without having an accident in his crate. He goes into his crate whenever needed without complaining. Children in the family are accepted if they are 6 years or older. Since Chihuahuas tend to bark sometimes, we are looking for a family who does not live in an apartment. Adopter for Monte must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Monte is $175.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Hi I'm Coco, a 15 pound Chi mix beauty. I was found when I was pregnant with puppies and my great foster family is keeping me and my pups until SCP can find us some forever homes. I'm fine with other dogs and considerate children. I love going on short walks on a leash (short, because I don't want to be away from my babies too long) and my foster says I do great on a leash. I'm not a high activity chi, nor am I a couch potato, I'm just right!!!! I'm a little shy at first, but become your best friend once I get to know you. I don't have free access to the house so my foster doesn't know about house training. I'm not being crated so you will need to help me to learn about crates and obedience training but I'm really smart and can pick up on those things if you work with me and give me the gentle guidance that will help me learn. Please come see me and my puppies Mufasa and Izzy at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Coco must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Coco is $175.

Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Labrador Retriever Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Hi, I'm Nala a beautiful, intelligent German Shepherd Dog mix. I'm about 35 pounds and just a pup so I'm going to be a large dog when I'm fully grown. I'm house and crate trained and working on my leash and obedience training. I know commands like sit, no and working on wait, shake, roll-over, spin and crawl – and I'm loving learning all these new things. My foster says I'm very smart and am learning quickly. He also says that I come when he calls my name. I'm dog and kid friendly but since there are no cats at my foster's home, not sure about that. My foster says that I don't have a harmful bone in my body so as long as the cat was used to an active fun loving puppy, it probably would be OK. My dream family would be active and include me in all their activities. If there was another dog about my size and also active to play with me, that would be great. I'd love to have a large yard with a 6 foot fence to run and jump and play in. I get a little nervous when riding in the car, but if you don't do sudden stops or turns and keep the AC a little cooler, I'm fine. If you're that special family that is looking for that new member of your “team”, please come see me at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Nala must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Nala is $175.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler. Hi, I'm Samie a full blooded Blue Heeler and a gorgeous one at that. I weigh approximately 25 pounds and am full grown. I'm crate/house trained, and walk well on a leash. I am very well behaved in the house. Although I enjoy an occasional play date with another dog, I prefer to get all the attention of my human family and would do best in a home without other dogs. I enjoy playing with considerate children, but it is recommended that they be at least 10 yrs old. I love to snuggle with my humans and I bond quickly. I'm a moderately active dog that enjoys going for walks or light jogs. I also enjoy car rides and going to dog friendly establishments. No apartments please. I would do best in a home with a fully fenced yard. Adopter for Samie must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi I'm Clyde. I came to the Second Chance program when my original owner died. I'm about 20 pounds of love and it's estimated that I'm about 8 years young. My foster says I'm a cuddle bug who follows her everywhere. There are other dogs in my foster home and I'm doing great with them. I stayed a while at a home with a considerate child and was fine with him. A family that likes to take walks would be a great fit for me, I get so excited when I see a leash. It will be good exercise for all of us. And then when we get home my family could give me belly rubs, finding that magic spot that I so love. Oh, I hope that family is out there looking for me!
