Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Hi, my name is Bo, and I'm a handsome adult shepherd-chow mix boy with a lot to offer my new forever family. I'm wary of strangers, but once I'm past my initial shyness, I'll be your new best friend - loyal, loving and affectionate. I'm good on a leash, have good house manners, house and crate trained and I get along with other dogs. My foster says I'm very playful with my foster sister – lots of tug of war sessions with toys every day. I love to chase squirrels, rabbits and kitties, so I would not be good in a family with cats. My perfect forever home would be with an experienced dog family that doesn't have small children and would be able to continue my socialization with strangers and new situations. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but the family would need to keep my weight down and my exercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $175. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Boxer-Pointer Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Location: League City, TX
Posted Breed: Boxer / Pointer / Mixed. Hi, I'm Pinky and my foster says I'm a very smart 2 year old who also has a “goofy” side that will make you laugh. I'm over 50 pounds, so I'm a large boxer mixed up kind of gal. I love being in the back yard playing tug of war, fetch or chase with my human or dog friends. My foster says that I mind very well and come when I'm called. I'm dog and kid friendly. There's no cats at my foster home so not sure how I would do with them. I'm active outside but become mellow when I'm inside. I'm house trained and learning how to ring the bell to go outside. I'm also learning how to “stay” and to walk on a leash so you will need to continue my training because I love to learn new things. I'm looking for an active family that will play with me outdoors but also want to cuddle with me indoors and let me share all the family activities. My foster says I've got this beautiful intimidating bark that I use to protect my family and property that I look forward to using at my new home. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Pinky must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Pinky is $175.

      Breed: Chesapeake Bay Retriever

      Location: League City, TX
Posted Breed: Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Hi, I'm Kenya, a full blood Chesapeake Bay Retriever (I'm an all American girl). I weigh approximately 70 pounds and I'm about 5 years old. My previous owner couldn't take care of me so I was kept in a kennel in the back yard with no one to play with. I'm a gorgeous high energy retriever who loves to retrieve and get wet. If someone is looking for a dog to do "dock diving", I bet I would be a great competitor in that sport. I'm house and crate trained, walk great on a leash and I get along well with other large dogs and cats. My present foster home doesn't have children, but I'm pretty sure I'd do great with older considerate children. I do not like small yappy dogs, so I wouldn't do well with them. I'm very affectionate, and like all Chessies, I'm very loyal to my family. If you family is into water sports that I can participate in, I'll be in my environment, and we'll have one great time. Adopter for Kenya must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Kenya is $175.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pointer / Mixed. Lyla is a Pointer/boxer mix. She is approximately 1 1/2 years old. Lyla has completed a 6 week basic training course. She is a good listener who will mind her manners with occasional reminders when she gets too excited. Lyla loves attention and is eager to be taught new skills. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. Hi, I'm Sophia a sweet young doxie mix who loves to cuddle and play. I'm a little over 1 year old so I'm the perfect age to join a new family. I was found at a shopping center and no one has been able to find my previous family. I weigh about 10 pounds, perfect for laps and snuggles. I'm good with other dogs. My foster doesn't have any cats or kids, but she said I've been in situations with both kids and cats and there were no problems so I'm pretty sure I'll be fine with them. My foster is keeping me indoors in a crate when she's gone and she says I'm doing fine with both crate and house training. My perfect family will be active and be willing to work with me on refining my obedience and leash training so I can learn new things and we can go on long walks together. The family would also provide me lots of chew toys (my fav toy!) so I will have them available when I need something to chew. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Sophia must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Sophia is $175.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: League City, TX
Posted Breed: Red Heeler. Hi I'm Vegas, a Red Heeler mix with an estimated birthdate of 9/28/16 so I'm still a puppy. My foster says I'm an absolute adorable sweetheart and snuggle bug. I weigh about 30 pounds so I'm going to be a large dog when I grow up. I was a gift to someone who determined she could not care for me so wanted me to go to a good home so that's how I got to SCP. I'm a very active puppy so I'm looking for an active family that can take me on long walks and/or have a good sized yard so I can play and wear off some of the puppy energy. I'm very dog friendly, living with three other dogs at my foster's and I'm having a ball playing with them. I'm kid friendly but since I'm so active I might inadvertently knock a small child down. No cats at my foster's home, so don't know how I'd work with them, but since I'm not aggressive, I bet I can be trained to accept a cat. My original owner kept me in the yard, so I'm now working on my house training at my foster's and making great progress. I'm also working on crate training but it's not my favorite spot. I've learned the sit command and doing really well at learning lay and stay and loving the challenges of learning new things. If you are interested in a loyal snuggle bug that you are willing to continue to train you will get the best, sweetest dog you will find. Come meet me at Petco, you'll fall in love. Adopter for Vegas must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Vegas is $175.

      Perrito

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: League City, TX
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Perrito means tiny dog in Spanish. And Perrito was the perfect name because he was so tiny when he first came into Second Chance Pets. He was a 4 1/2 month old Chihuahua who only weighed 3 1/2 pounds. His birthday is estimated to be 11/02/16. If you’re looking for a sweet dog to cuddle with and give lots of love to, Perrito is the best little guy for you. Since he is still a baby he sleeps a lot and likes to spend that time on someone’s lap. His foster mom does a lot of computer work and he is her constant companion on her lap while she is working on the computer. He loves everyone but especially is drawn to men. He gets along very well with other dogs and cats and has a lot of fun playing with toys with children. However, because of his tiny size, it would be safer for him to only go to homes where the children are age 6 or older and know how to be careful around small dogs. The only thing he doesn’t like is traveling in a car. He gets car sick. Hopefully, he will grow out of it, but if your family would like to take him on road trips with you, it would probably not be a fun time for anyone. But when at his home, Perrito is lovable and energetic and loves to chase his toys. He is crate trained and sleeps very well every night for a good 6 – 7 hours. He is working on his potty training and is very happy to go potty outside any time he is given the chance. Perrito would brighten your life and would provide constant entertainment in anyone’s home. Adopter for Perrito must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Perrito is $175.

      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix

Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed. Hi, I'm Mufasa, a baby terrier mix and aren't I the cutest thing you've seen??? I was born in early December, 2016 to Coco, who's also looking for her forever home. I'm the brown sweetie in the pictures. My sister Izzy is the black one. Since mom is only 5 pounds, we aren't expected to weigh much more than that, so I'll be small when I grow up. Since I'm so young you will need to be prepared to give me all the training that I will need, including house, crate, leash, and manners. If I turn out like my mom, I'll won't be a high activity dog, nor a slug, I'll be just right. You will need to supply me with lots of toys, especially chew toys since I'm a baby and will be going through that "chewing phase" that all puppies go through. Someone will need to be able to take me out often to help with my house training since a puppy just can't wait too long when it's "time to go". Please come see me at Petco, I'm so cute I'm sure there will be lots of people wanting to adopt me! Adopter for Mufasa must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Mufasa is $175.
