Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Hi, my name is Bo, and I'm a handsome adult shepherd-chow mix boy with a lot to offer my new forever family. I'm wary of strangers, but once I'm past my initial shyness, I'll be your new best friend - loyal, loving and affectionate. I'm good on a leash, have good house manners, house and crate trained and I get along with other dogs. My foster says I'm very playful with my foster sister – lots of tug of war sessions with toys every day. I love to chase squirrels, rabbits and kitties, so I would not be good in a family with cats. My perfect forever home would be with an experienced dog family that doesn't have small children and would be able to continue my socialization with strangers and new situations. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but the family would need to keep my weight down and my exercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $175. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Perrito

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: League City, TX
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Perrito means tiny dog in Spanish. And Perrito was the perfect name because he was so tiny when he first came into Second Chance Pets. He was a 4 1/2 month old Chihuahua who only weighed 3 1/2 pounds. His birthday is estimated to be 11/02/16. If you’re looking for a sweet dog to cuddle with and give lots of love to, Perrito is the best little guy for you. Since he is still a baby he sleeps a lot and likes to spend that time on someone’s lap. His foster mom does a lot of computer work and he is her constant companion on her lap while she is working on the computer. He loves everyone but especially is drawn to men. He gets along very well with other dogs and cats and has a lot of fun playing with toys with children. However, because of his tiny size, it would be safer for him to only go to homes where the children are age 6 or older and know how to be careful around small dogs. The only thing he doesn’t like is traveling in a car. He gets car sick. Hopefully, he will grow out of it, but if your family would like to take him on road trips with you, it would probably not be a fun time for anyone. But when at his home, Perrito is lovable and energetic and loves to chase his toys. He is crate trained and sleeps very well every night for a good 6 – 7 hours. He is working on his potty training and is very happy to go potty outside any time he is given the chance. Perrito would brighten your life and would provide constant entertainment in anyone’s home. Adopter for Perrito must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Perrito is $175.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed. Hi, I'm Mufasa, a baby terrier mix and aren't I the cutest thing you've seen??? I was born in early December, 2016 to Coco, who's also looking for her forever home. I'm the brown sweetie in the pictures. My sister Izzy is the black one. Since mom is only 5 pounds, we aren't expected to weigh much more than that, so I'll be small when I grow up. Since I'm so young you will need to be prepared to give me all the training that I will need, including house, crate, leash, and manners. If I turn out like my mom, I'll won't be a high activity dog, nor a slug, I'll be just right. You will need to supply me with lots of toys, especially chew toys since I'm a baby and will be going through that "chewing phase" that all puppies go through. Someone will need to be able to take me out often to help with my house training since a puppy just can't wait too long when it's "time to go". Please come see me at Petco, I'm so cute I'm sure there will be lots of people wanting to adopt me! Adopter for Mufasa must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Mufasa is $175.

Posted Breed: Pomeranian. Hi, I'm Jackson, my best bud, Leon, and I were relinquished to the shelter because our previous family was no longer able to care for us. I'm fully grown at 20 lbs and my foster says I'm a real sweetie. I'm looking for a family that can provide me with the attention and care that I need and want. I don't like being left alone and will whine when my person leaves me. I'm dog and cat friendly (well, the cat I'm living with now isn't giving me a change to be really friendly, but that's not my fault). I would definitely like to have a place at the foot of the bed to sleep instead of some ole crate but I will go into the crate and pout if I have to stay in the crate and not be with my people. I'm not a digger or fence jumper, and I'm really good walking on a leash – I love going for walks. I'm house trained if I'm not left for long periods of time without a potty break. I know the sit command and can “shake” for treats. Other than that I'm one cutey pie with an adorable snaggle tooth that makes me have a goofy smile. Please come to Petco on Saturday and give me my forever home. Adopter for Jackson must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Jackson is $225.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi I'm Clyde. I came to the Second Chance program when my original owner died. I'm about 20 pounds of love and it's estimated that I'm about 8 years young. My foster says I'm a cuddle bug who follows her everywhere. There are other dogs in my foster home and I'm doing great with them. I stayed a while at a home with a considerate child and was fine with him. A family that likes to take walks would be a great fit for me, I get so excited when I see a leash. It will be good exercise for all of us. And then when we get home my family could give me belly rubs, finding that magic spot that I so love. Oh, I hope that family is out there looking for me! Adopter for Clyde must live in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit will be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Clyde is $175.
