Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Bo: I'm a gorgeous German Shepherd/Chow mix, aka a 'Chowman Shepherd' according to my foster dad. I'm a big fluffy sweetheart who just wants to be part of a family. My major interests are plush toys, walks, chasing squirrels and playing with my foster parent's other dog. I do chase cats so I would probably not do well in a home with cats. I'm a large dog who might knock down a small child, so older, considerate children would be a much better fit. I'm house and crate trained and have great house manners. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but you will need to keep my weight down and my excercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. If you have time and energy for a lovable lug, then I'm the pup for you. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $175. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Doxie-Pin
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. HI! My name is Boomer. I am a Dachshund; well, kind of. I have the head, face, body and loonnng tail of a Doxie, but then I have these long skinny legs! I don’t know where those came from, a min pin or a Manchester terrier? I run like a little gazelle so maybe there is some Italian Greyhound in my ancestry. Guess you can say I'm a perfect example of my breed. I was born approximately April 1, 2017 and I weigh less than 14 pounds. I will probably grow up to weigh no more than 20 pounds. I am super sweet - I’m a people-dog; but I also love playing with other nice dogs. I play hard and snuggle hard too (a true couch potato once I’m tired). I am a kisser! My foster mom says I have a very gentle soul. I am crate trained and 95% potty trained. I have a dog door at my foster house and I LOVE running in and out – there is lot to see outside but I also like to come in and get reassurance that my person is there. I love toys and pizzles to chew on. I am good with cats although I do sometimes like to bark at them but there is not a mean bone in my body – if you tell me to stop I will. I’m the lowest pup on the totem pole at home so sometimes I get a little shy right at first but I warm up very nicely. I’m also great with kids and am learning not to jump up on them right now. Adopter for Boomer must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Boomer is $175.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Hi I'm Coco, a 15 pound Chi mix beauty. I was found when I was pregnant with puppies and my great foster family asked SCP to help find our forever homes. All of my pups have found theirs, it's time for me to find mine. I'm fine with other dogs about my size and considerate children. I love going on short walks on a leash and my foster says I do great on a leash. I'm not a high activity chi, nor am I a couch potato, I'm just right!!!! I'm a little shy at first, but will become your best friend once I get to know you. I'm house trained. I'm not being crated so you will need to help me to learn about crates and obedience training but I'm really smart and can pick up on those things if you work with me and give me the gentle guidance that will help me learn. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Coco must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Coco is $175.

Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Maltese / Mixed. Where's Waldo? Here I am. I'm a young, about 15 pound, boy, just a year old and full of life. I found myself at the shelter due to no fault of my own. This nice lady with SCP came and saved me. Hooray!!!! I am a good boy and my foster mom is working with me on my manners. She says I'm one smart cookie - and I agree - I learned to sit, lay, shake and crawl in the short time I've been in this foster home. I bark at new people but once they say hello, I usually stop. I am house and crate trained. I am dog and cat friendly and love kids. My dream family would have another dog that I could play with when the family is busy and a family that would take me and my new bud so that we were part of the family activities. Am I good fit for your family? Come out and meet me at one of our Adoption Events on Saturday at the Clear Lake Petco. Adopter for Waldo must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Waldo is $175.

      Breed: Italian Greyhound-Rat Terrier Mix

Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Italian Greyhound / Mixed. Hi there! I’m Bailey a 1 year old Terrier/Italian Greyhound mix (maybe), full-grown and I weigh 14 lbs. My first day at adoptions will be Saturday October 14, but I am available for pre-adoption now! Action! Activity! Fun! – that’s me! Personality plus! I like everyone! I like parents, kids, other fun dogs (I never fight) and I’m pretty good with cats. Cats are VERY interesting so sometimes I bark at them and I might chase them if they want me to, but I’m never mean. I LOVE chewing on chewies but I don’t chew on things I shouldn’t – my favorites are pizzles and pork rolls. I also love my dog door because I can go outside when mom is home and go look for bugs in the yard. I love to search the yard and garden for critters! But I don’t dig things up – I just like to hunt for them – I don’t harm them either. I’m very curious about the whole world. I am VERY sweet, affectionate and I can be a cuddler. I like walks and LOVE to run – I run like a gazelle. I am housetrained and crate trained for nighttime sleeping if you like that. I would LOVE a home with kids, another dog to play with AND a big back yard to play in when you are at home. PS – don’t leave any goodies on the counters….I am pretty agile.  Adopter for Bailey must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Bailey is $175.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Hi, I'm Chichi a beautiful chi mix who was found as a stray and am now looking for that forever home. I'm very petite, weighing only 6 pounds and I'm an adult so I shouldn't grow any more. I'm an inside dog at my foster's and I'm doing great with no accidents so far. I'm crate trained and walk great on a leash. I'm presently living with dogs and am not aggressive, but I don't like it when other dogs get excited around me so I'd do better with other calm dogs. No cats at my foster's so not sure how I would do around them. I'm not a barker like some chi's and not interested in chewing, digging or jumping up on people. My perfect family would want me to be close to them while they watch TV or read (I'm a couch potato) and take leisurely walks around the neighborhood. Small children may not be appropriate since I'm so tiny and easily excitable that a small child may hurt or scare me. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday and give me that forever home I'm wanting so badly. Adopter for Chichi must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Chichi is $175.

Posted Breed: Hound / Terrier / Mixed. Hi, I'm Cash and I was caught by the police loitering on the streets and was almost sentenced to death for that minor offense, but happily some really nice ladies rescued me and brought me to SCP to find a home – how's that for pure kindness. Everyone thinks I'm a hound/terrier mix and who am I to argue with them! I'm a playful and outgoing boy who just loves to play catch (so maybe there's some retriever in me too). My estimated DOB is 1/2016 and I weigh about 65 pounds. Since I'm still growing, I will probably gain another 10 lbs or so as I fill out. Going from the street to a home has been so good for me and I'm learning so much new stuff, like house manners, crate training, how to walk nicely on a leash. I'm living in the country with other dogs and really like to play and run with the big guys. I don't pay much attention to the cats, but if they run, I might chase them. . I'm a quick learner and I really want to please my people. Did I also say I'm also a little bit of a clown, so I can make you laugh. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday and let me show you how great I'll be in your home being part of your family. A big back yard and another dog to play with would be great. I'd be pretty good with older children, but may be a bit boisterous for the smaller ones. I would make a great jogging partner. Adopter for Cash must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Cash is $175.
