Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Hi, my name is Bo, and I'm a handsome adult shepherd-chow mix boy with a lot to offer my new forever family. I'm wary of strangers, but once I'm past my initial shyness, I'll be your new best friend - loyal, loving and affectionate. I'm good on a leash, have good house manners, house and crate trained and I get along with other dogs. My foster says I'm very playful with my foster sister – lots of tug of war sessions with toys every day. I love to chase squirrels, rabbits and kitties, so I would not be good in a family with cats. My perfect forever home would be with an experienced dog family that doesn't have small children and would be able to continue my socialization with strangers and new situations. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but the family would need to keep my weight down and my exercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $125. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Age: Baby
      Location: League City, TX
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (medium coat). Hi, I'm Sofie, a baby ChiPin who was found as a stray. My estimated birth date is 5/15/2016 so I'm still a puppy. I'm very sweet and a super active and playful puppy. I'm good with dogs and tolerant cats. Children under 7 years may not be appropriate since I'm so small and playful. You'll need to continue my house, crate, leash and obedience training, but my foster says I'm a quick learner who responds to treats and making great progress. My dream family would be active with considerate children and have a compatible dog that I could play with. I would love being included in the family's activities but also enjoy time for just sitting on laps, loving and cuddling, and taking naps once I'm all played out. An apartment may not be a good place for me since I do have a great singing voice, which I use on special occasions. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday! Adopter for Sofie must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Sofie is $175.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Terrier / Mixed. Hi, I'm Belle, a 18 pound Dachshund/terrier mix, and I'm around 2 years old. I was found as a stray and am now looking for that great family to take me in and care for me. I'm house and crate trained and use my doggie door. I love my 4 dog siblings but don't have any cat friends so I am not sure how I would like them. I don't live with any children but I am very considerate when my fosters' two young grandchildren come to the house and I have never shown any aggressive tendencies. I'm working on my leash and obedience training, so you'll need to continue to teach me all the new things I'll need to know to be the perfect fit in your family. I'm a medium activity dog, so a family that likes to spend time playing with me and taking me on walks would be great. Please come to see me at Petco, I know you'll fall in love. Adopter for Belle must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Belle is $150.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed. Hi, my name is Baby and I'm a young chi mix. My owner got me as a present but with her really busy schedule, she's not able to care for me, so I'm looking for that forever home where the family has the time for me. I'm a playful and outgoing cuddle bug who just adores being with my people. I'm good with cats who will tolerate a playful puppy, good with other dogs and children. I'm still working on my leash, obedience, house and crate training but I so want to please my people that with caring and consistent training I'm sure I'll be the perfect pet. I'm small and fast, so the family will need to watch out for me around open doors and gates so I don't see something I want to play with and escape. Very young children may not understand not to leave doors open so may not be appropriate. Please come meet me and see if we are a match made in heaven! Adopter for Baby must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Baby is $175.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi I'm Clyde. I came to the Second Chance program when my original owner died. I'm about 20 pounds of love and it's estimated that I'm about 8 years young. My foster says I'm a cuddle bug who follows her everywhere. There are other dogs in my foster home and I'm doing great with them. I stayed a while at a home with a considerate child and was fine with him. A family that likes to take walks would be a great fit for me, I get so excited when I see a leash. It will be good exercise for all of us. And then when we get home my family could give me belly rubs, finding that magic spot that I so love. Oh, I hope that family is out there looking for me! Posted Breed: Shepherd / Golden Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I'm Bay, a beautiful 55 pound GSD mix. My brother Scout and I were adopted from SCP as puppies but when our family ran into financial difficulties they had to return us to SCP. I'm a little shy at first but after I know you I am a great big cuddle bug. I'm housebroken, cat and dog friendly and I walk nicely on a leash and love to go on walks. I can be a picky eater unless my favorite humans are around. There are no kids at my foster home, so not sure how I would do around them. Very small children may not be appropriate since I'm so big I might knock them down with my tail! Please come see me at Petco and give me a home where I can cuddle with my family. Adopter for Bay must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. Adoption fee for Bay is $125. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clear Lake Petco, 2410 Bay Area Boulevard.
