Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Bo: I'm a gorgeous German Shepherd/Chow mix, aka a 'Chowman Shepherd' according to my foster dad. I'm a big fluffy sweetheart who just wants to be part of a family. My major interests are plush toys, walks, chasing squirrels and playing with my foster parent's other dog. I do chase cats so I would probably not do well in a home with cats. I'm a large dog who might knock down a small child, so older, considerate children would be a much better fit. I'm house and crate trained and have great house manners. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but you will need to keep my weight down and my excercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. If you have time and energy for a lovable lug, then I'm the pup for you. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $175. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat). Odie’s a sweet 4 year old yorki-poo who had a wonderful home until his owner passed away and her husband took ill. He’s been somewhat neglected in recent months and needs a loving home. He’s a sweet little guy, full of love and playfulness – throw his stuffed rabbit or raccoon and watch him run to fetch it for you! He also loves to run in the park and chase squirrels in the back yard. His nature is gentle and he is good with considerate children over 10 years old and other dogs, never nips or becomes irritable. He’s potty trained (as long as there is a doggy door or you let him out regularly), very obedient and eager to please, comes when you call him and doesn’t run away or bark inappropriately. Lucky you if you can give Odie the loving home he deserves! Adopter for Odie must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Odie is $175. I found myself locked up in dog jail, due to no fault of my own. An animal control officer found me scared and abandoned and took me to safety. It wasn’t long after my arrival at the shelter a nice lady from SCP came and took me to my new foster home. All safe and secure, I’m so grateful! Cuddles and kisses, oh I have so many to give. Do you have a lap for me to sit in, that’s my favorite place. Dogs, oh how I love other dogs, and kids they are great too. Paper and crate trained, I am. My house training skills are coming right along. Am I a perfect fit for your family? Come out and meet me. Itty Bitty

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Itty Bitty got her name because she is . . . . . . . well, itty bitty. She only weighs 8 pounds and she is 5 years old. So she won’t be getting much bigger. She was born approximately on 06/29/12. She is a solid black, female Chihuahua. For the first 5 years of her life she has lived with a lady who is now elderly and very ill. She is not able to take care of Itty Bitty any longer. Even though it breaks her heart to give her up, she wants to do what is best for Itty Bitty. The lady is pretty immobile so she sat much of the day and held Itty Bitty all wrapped up in a blanket because she is so little she is often cold. So if you have mothering instincts and want to give lots of love to this cuddly little cutie, Itty Bitty would love to come and live with you. She is a slight bit shy but she bonds very quickly with new people. So if you’re looking for a loving lap dog – Itty Bitty is your girl. She wants to be right next to you all the time. Even though she cries a little when you leave her, it is only for a few minutes. She was used to sleeping with her previous owner every night but she has adjusted very quickly to sleeping in her own bed with her new doggie friends at her foster home. Her former owner was unable to take her outside because of her physical condition so Itty Bitty is very good about going potty on pads in the house. But now that she is in her foster home, she has discovered the great outdoors. She loves to go outside and investigate all that is in the outside world that she has not been able to see until now. She is very smart and with a little patience and repeated trips outside each day, she will pick up this pottying outside thing quickly. She gets along well with other dogs and cats. She has never been in a crate and probably would not adjust very well to one. Itty Bitty’s eyes are sensitive to smoke so a cigarette-free house is important for her. She would also do better with children who are age 8 or older. Since she is such a people-loving dog, she will be happiest if someone is at home with her most of the time. Adopter for Itty Bitty must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Itty Bitty’s adoption fee is $175.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Greetings! My name is Lexie! I am a very pretty (if I do say so myself) Chihuahua puppy. I was born around March 1, 2017 and I only weigh 6.5 lbs (I probably won’t get much bigger). I’m a little stick of dynamite! I was found all alone one evening alongside the road. I was terrified; but I’m mighty sassy now. I found out that people are wonderful! I love to play with other nice dogs, I love long walks in the park (hehe), I’m good with kitty cats and, boy, do I love people! I’m pretty much house trained and I’m crate trained if you like that kind of thing – one of my favorite parts of the day is ‘peanut butter bedtime’. I might be shy right at first but I warm up pretty much right away and pretty soon I’m runnin’ the joint. I like to chew on pizzles and pork rolls. I love to watch TV or read with my person. I am learning to use a dog door too – my foster mom lets me and my other dog friends run and play in the back yard when she is home so we go in and out all the time. Adopter for Lexi must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Lexi is $175.

Posted Breed: Red Heeler. Hi, I'm Dottie. I am a 5 lb. Red Heeler puppy. The doctors think my birthday is around Aug 16, 2017. I will probably grow up to be about 35 lbs. Because I'm so young, I'm still learning a lot of new things. I am crate trained and working on house training, and getting pretty good at it as long as I get to go out every 4-5 hours. I do pretty well on a leash and am working on leash walking. I am the perfect age to start working on learning obedience commands. I'm a quick learner and picking up on everything, but you need to expect to continue my training and to provide me with stimulating toys to keep me busy as I go through the phases of puppyhood. I love my small kong. Since I'm so young, I need a home with no large dogs or children under 8 years old. I'm not a high level dog and I'm not a couch potato, I'm perfect needing just a moderate amount of exercise, but lots of love. If you're interested in a great puppy to include in all your family activities, I'm your gal. Come see me at the SCP Adoption Events on Saturday at Petco. Adopter for Dottie must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Dottie is $175.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Husky / Mixed (short coat). I am a black and tan Cutie that was rescued with my roommate Franki just hours away from being taken to the animal shelter. I am a Husky/Shepherd mix, and I’ll probably weigh 50-55 lbs when I’m all grown up. My foster believes I was born in April/May, which would make me 7 months old. I get along well with children and other small and large dogs. We are working on my interest in cats, which are only fun to chase when they run. I am eager to learn and can already sit, lie down and come when I’m called. I like going into my crate at night to sleep and I have not had an accident in the house…yet. I have had all my shots, am heartworm negative, and I was fixed (didn’t know I was broken…) just before Thanksgiving. I love attention and will be a really great companion in my forever home. I’m crossing my paws hoping I can find the perfect family to share at Christmas. Adopter for Sammi must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Sammi is $175.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Husky / Mixed (medium coat). I am a big, goofy, fun loving puppy. I am over a year old, so I will not grow too much more than my current 65 lbs. I enjoy running and playing with my large and small dog buddies, but I have to be careful around the little ones (dogs and children) because I don’t realize how big I am yet. My foster dad is helping me with this and says we’re making good progress. He’s also taught me to sit, stay, lie down and to come when he calls. I'm crate trained and have come a long way on my house training. I would really enjoy a forever home with a nice backyard and another dog to play with and I would be a great running companion too. I don’t pay any attention to the cats that live here, after all, they’re just cats… I am current on all of my shots, I’ve been fixed (didn’t know I was broken…) and I am heartworm negative. If you want some “Happy” in your life, I can be the one to put a smile on your face. Adopter for Cash must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Cash is $175.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Howdy! My name is Jolene! I’m a little over a year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. My foster mom says I’m 35 pounds of pure energy, affection, and smarts. I love to cuddle and I aim to please. I’ve spent the 1st year of my life surviving on the streets so I was never taught good manners but thanks to my fosters I’m on the fast track to being a perfect family pet. So far I’ve learned to sit and down and I’m learning a few other commands. My housebreaking skills is a work in progress but I’m getting better everyday. I’m curious about cats but not sure how I would be around them. Small dogs and kids are not a good idea because I’m so playful I tend to knock them down a lot. I can sleep through the night in my crate without a peep or accidents. I’m awesome on my leash so I love daily walks and RUNS. My ideal family would be one that includes me in their active family adventures. I love car rides especially if your heading to the dog park. Adopter for Jolene must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Jolene is $175.
