Posted Breed: Shepherd / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). Bo: I'm a gorgeous German Shepherd/Chow mix, aka a 'Chowman Shepherd' according to my foster dad. I'm a big fluffy sweetheart who just wants to be part of a family. My major interests are plush toys, walks, chasing squirrels and playing with my foster parent's other dog. I do chase cats so I would probably not do well in a home with cats. I'm a large dog who might knock down a small child, so older, considerate children would be a much better fit. I'm house and crate trained and have great house manners. I'm a special needs dog since I've been diagnosed with hip dysplasia (common in GSD dogs). It is presently under control, but you will need to keep my weight down and my excercise up and I'll have lots of good years ahead of me. If you have time and energy for a lovable lug, then I'm the pup for you. Bo's adopter must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years of age. Adoption fee for Bo is $175. Adoptions are held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Petco on Bay Area Boulevard. All dogs are heartworm tested, on Heartgard, fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and de-fleaed. All dogs are microchipped.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Bichon Frise. Hi, my name is Buddy. I’m a Bichon mix who was found at a park and picked up by a really nice family and taken to SCP to help me find my forever home. I weigh about 17 pounds and my estimated DOB is July 2015. I presently live with 3 other dogs and I’m doing fine with them. I’m OK with cats as long as they are indoors and I get to know them. When I see outdoor cats running through the neighborhood, I will chase them. I’m good with older considerate children. I’m house trained and walk great on a leash. My foster is not crate training me, so don’t know how I would do in a crate. I love to play with my toys and play tug of war with a rope. I know a few commands like Down, Sit, Laydown and of course Treat! My dream home is one where the kids are old enough to know how to play with me gently, will make me part of their family, and continue to teach me all kinds of new commands. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Buddy must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Buddy is $225.

      Monte

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Monte has a cream color coat and tan ears. He is a Chihuahua puppy whose birthday is estimated as 03/05/17. He and his sister Mollie were born outside and lived outside for the first 6 weeks of their lives. Their Mom was called the "neighborhood dog". Everyone liked her, but no one wanted to take the responsibility for taking care of her or her babies. One man in the neighborhood put together a make-shift shelter for them outside with old boards. But even with that, they had a hard life because during that time we had a lot of rain storms and cold weather. Its amazing that they are healthy, but they are. Monte is very active and energetic. He loves playing with his sister. He likes to play in the back yard and is always ready to investigate anything new that he finds. He is interested in the cats in his foster home and likes to follow them, but doesn't chase them. Since he lived outside, he really wants to go outside to go potty. Most of the time he can go all night without having an accident in his crate. He goes into his crate whenever needed without complaining. Children in the family are accepted if they are 6 years or older. Since Chihuahuas tend to bark sometimes, we are looking for a family who does not live in an apartment. Adopter for Monte must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Monte is $175.

Posted Breed: Boston Terrier / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed. Hi, I'm Puddles, a 15 pound Boston/Jack Russell terrier mix. I'm about 5 years old and a little bit of a diva. I want all the family's attention so I will tell other dogs to go away if they are asking for the family's attention. I will play and meet other dogs and do just fine as long as everyone knows I'm the diva! I can give a great big smile when I want to, showing all my teeth when I'm trying to get on the good side of someone or when I've been naughty and trying to impress. My foster says I'm good with considerate older children and OK with cats. I would love to have a family that wants a medium active dog (not too active, not a couch potato – just right) who will give me all the attention I so want and need. Adopter for Puddles must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Puddles is $175.

Posted Breed: Hound / Terrier / Mixed. Hi, I'm Cash and I was caught by the police loitering on the streets and was almost sentenced to death for that minor offense, but happily some really nice ladies rescued me and brought me to SCP to find a home – how's that for pure kindness. Everyone thinks I'm a hound/terrier mix and who am I to argue with them! I'm a playful and outgoing boy who just loves to play catch (so maybe there's some retriever in me too). My estimated DOB is 1/2016 and I weigh about 65 pounds. Going from the street to a home has been so good for me and I'm learning so much new stuff, like house manners, crate training, how to walk nicely on a leash. I'm living with dogs and older children and loving all the attention I'm getting from them. No cats at my foster's so not sure how I would do around them. I'm a quick learner and I really want to please my people. Did I also say I'm also a little bit of a clown, so I can make you laugh. Please come see me at Petco on Saturday and let me show you how great I'll be in your home being part of your family. Adopter for Cash must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Cash is $175.

      Breed: Jack Russell Terrier-Unknown Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi I'm Clyde. I came to the Second Chance program when my original owner died. I'm about 20 pounds of love and it's estimated that I'm about 8 years young. My foster says I'm a cuddle bug who follows her everywhere. There are other dogs in my foster home and I'm doing great with them but my foster is careful when giving us treats since I can get protective of my treats with other dogs. I'm doing fine with the cats in my foster's home. I've been around considerate children and did fine with them, but very young children may not be appropriate since they may be too active around a dog that was not raised with small children. I'm house and crate trained (although I would prefer not being in a crate). I walk nicely on a leash. My perfect home is one where the family will take the time to let me adjust to the new family and understands that your patience with me will pay off with a sweet loving pet. If the family likes to take walks that would be a great fit for me, I get so excited when I see a leash. It will be good exercise for all of us. And then when we get home my family could give me belly rubs, finding that magic spot that I so love. Oh, I hope that family is out there looking for me! Adopter for Clyde must live in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit will be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Clyde is $175.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Hi I'm Coco, a 15 pound Chi mix beauty. I was found when I was pregnant with puppies and my great foster family is keeping me and my pups until SCP can find us some forever homes. I'm fine with other dogs and considerate children. I love going on short walks on a leash (short, because I don't want to be away from my babies too long) and my foster says I do great on a leash. I'm not a high activity chi, nor am I a couch potato, I'm just right!!!! I'm a little shy at first, but become your best friend once I get to know you. I don't have free access to the house so my foster doesn't know about house training. I'm not being crated so you will need to help me to learn about crates and obedience training but I'm really smart and can pick up on those things if you work with me and give me the gentle guidance that will help me learn. Please come see me and my puppies Mufasa and Izzy at Petco on Saturday. Adopter for Coco must reside in the immediate Houston/Galveston area and be at least 25 years old. A home visit may be required prior to this dog going to any home. Adoption fee for Coco is $175.
