Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel. Meet "Eclair Au Chocolat" (fondly known as Chocolate), our rescue's resident Pastry Chef. Like most Cocker Spaniels , Chocolate is rather food obsessed, however he takes it up a notch (like any great chef, he is more like "food addicted"). Although he will hoover up almost anything delectable, Chocolate does best on a grain free diet (recommended for all Cocker Spaniels), which is great for ears and skin. Chocolate is a very special boy (very dear to us) who is looking for an experienced Cocker Spaniel home. He is extremely loving and affectionate and a real glutton for attention (especially belly rubs), which he will reciprocate in kind with lots of Cocker Kisses. However he is also quite a sensitive dog who requires a gentle touch (any form of rough housing will almost certainly scare him). Chocolate is a bit of an older boy now (his age is estimated to be around 8) and has been waiting for placement for a while ... although he is a beautiful dog (chocolate merles are rather rare), many adopters have sadly passed him by in favor of a "younger model." As a fairly laid back boy, Chocolate will make a wonderful dog for a single person who is looking for a companion or perhaps a couple of empty nesters who are looking for a new Chocolate baby to love and spoil. If you are a walker, then Chocolate is just the dog for you, as he adores his outings to the park and is great on the leash. Chocolate is a healthy dog who has been neutered, microchipped, is current on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be treated to a dental cleaning as well as a professional grooming before going home, so will be starting out his new life fully loaded and on the right foot. If you would like to adopt or foster our little Eclair Au Chocolat, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com or visit http://www.nyabandonedangels.com/ , where you can complete and return an application on-line. With a daily dose of Chocolate in your life, things are sure to be a whole lot sweeter.

Cocker Spaniel

A.K.A. : American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel
Overview: The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds in America. They're playful, love people, and adapt to both city and country dwelling. A Cocker needs a lot of exercise, but you'll find it a joy to have around!

Character: Cocker Spaniels are intelligent, cheerful, lively, and affectionate.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets.
Care: The Cocker Spaniel requires regular grooming with a brush and comb. The ears should be cleaned frequently and a professional clipping and scissoring every 2 to 3 months.
Training: This breed requires consistency in training, but do not be too firm. He's eager to please and willing to learn, with the right approach.

More About Cocker Spaniel Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Hi Everyone, my name is Sammy. I was surrendered to rescue last week because my family couldn't take care of me anymore. They adopted me seven years ago when I was three years old, so that makes me ten now. I guess I'm considered a senior, even though I still have the loving spirit of a puppy. I am a happy boy with a zest for life. I am super friendly, my natural tail is always wagging. Now that I'm in rescue, I've already received the medical care I needed. I'm UTD on vaccines, HW tested negative, I had senior blood work, a dental and X-rays of my hip. You see I have been limping for quite awhile, the X-rays showed I have a severely degenerative hip which is causing me pain and discomfort when I walk. I overheard the doctor say I will probably need to have orthopedic surgery, a femoral head ostectomy (FHO), but for now, I'm on pain Meds and a glucosamine/turmeric supplement to see if that alleviates the pain and helps my walking. I hope it does, because if I need surgery the recovery time is six to eight weeks. I'm currently looking for a foster home with NO STAIRS where I can stay for a few weeks until I am reevaluated. I get along well with other dogs but can't run and play. If you can offer me a place to chill, please complete an online application at http://www.nyabandonedangels.com/adopt-or-foster-application please mark for Sammy. I'll be checking my inbox daily! ❌⭕️❌⭕️, Sammy

This adorable and very SWEET chocolate senior gal with be heading our way in a few weeks from Georgia. Poppy was rescued from a kill shelter about two months ago when her time ran out! A rescue in Georgia pulled her for us! Poppy is blind and suffered from a ruptured ear drum which has left her with permanent head tilt. It also made her feel like she was walking upside down. Because of this, she was unable to travel safely to New York and was being medically cared for and fostered in Georgia. She recently received the okay from her Vet to travel, and will be making her way to the Big Apple just in time for Thanksgiving! Poppy has a lot to be thankful for and so will the person or family who gets to share their life with this gentle and loving Angel! Many, many THANKS to her generous sponsor, fabulous caregivers and veterinarian in Georgia. It took a village to save Poppy!

In July, four Cocker Spaniels and a cat were confiscated from a home in Colbert County Alabama. These poor dogs and cat were the victims of ANIMAL CRUELTY! According to the Colbert County shelter, this was one of the most severest cruelty cases they have ever seen! These poor Cocker Spaniels were so severely matted that they had maggots growing in their fur and skin, they had ear, eye and skin infections, three of the dogs are blind and have heart issues. With the outpour and generosity of the public the shelter was able to provide them with emergency medical care. Sadly one of the Cocker Spaniels died from heart disease, another was adopted. There are two remaining, Santana, a 15 year old male who is blind and deaf and Sassy, a 7 year old female who is partially blind and deaf. They will be heading to us for a better life as soon as we can arrange transport to get them here safely. We have contacted Pilots and Paws, but no luck so far. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated and welcomed! We are in URGENT need of a FOSTER or FOREVER home for these two Angels who have lived their entire life in squalor, severe neglect and abuse. We hoping to find them a loving FOREVER/FOSTER homes where they will be cherished for the rest of their lives. Please help us give them the life they were meant to have by completing our online application to FOSTER or ADOPT one or both of these Angels. For an application please visit our website at http://www.nyabandonedangels.com/adopt-or-foster-application. They need someone to show them LOVE and kindness as soon as they arrive! She will probably be a candidate for TECA surgery. She has severe dental disease. One good thing, she is already spayed. According to the shelter, Spanelli is only 6-8 year old, she appears much older and looks like she's been through a war zone. Obviously, she has suffered neglect for a very long time, this did NOT occur overnight! We can NOT fathom how any person could allow this to happen. Inexcusable! Through all her suffering Spanelli remains a gentle friendly girl who seeks being petted. How sad! He is working diligently at overcoming his emotional wounds from the failings of his previously family. Simon is patient with his foster brothers' domineering antics and although fearful of new people, he liberally gives his love once he's comfortable! He is a lover of both dogs and people but is looking for an adult only home since he closely bonds with one person and showers them with love! Simon is hoping with all his heart that his person will be patient in helping him adjust to his new and better life. He is sometimes fearful of new people unless his person is close by until he adjusts but is otherwise a mellow guy who loves to snuggle, relax with a toy, show off his great leash walking skills and is eager to learn from his person. This handsome black beauty deserves a home that will love him as greatly as he loves them! Head over to nyabandonedangels.com to fill out an application for this gentle giant. Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel. ❤ JACK ❤ Jack is a handsome 7 yr old male cocker spaniel in need of a new home. Jack is a fun companion who loves to go on hikes, play ball, and otherwise spend time outdoors. He's a cautious, timid boy at times, but gets over it with encouragement (a "Good Boy, Jack" is all he usually needs in order to feel secure). Once Jack gets to know a person, he enjoys being petted and getting a good back scratch. Jack is fine with friendly dogs, but cannot live with cats. He needs a kind, compassionate, and understanding guardian who will give him time to adjust. A quieter environment would be best for Jack. Jack does have a few resource guarding issues (food, toys, etc) so is not a dog for children. All of Jack's medical needs have been addressed (he is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and in good health), so he is all ready to go. All he needs now is a place to call home and someone to call his owner. If you would be interested to give Jack a chance, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com or visit www.nyabandonedangels.com, where you can complete an application online. Invest a little time in Jack and find your new best friend.
