Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (medium coat). Owen is the ultimate hiking buddy! He is around 6 or 7, very active, and up for anything. Loves to ride in the car with you to run errands or to the dog park! Especially to the dog park. Owen seems to really warm up to Men more than Women, and that's OK! Owen is a funny guy: he is not a needy dog; he does not cuddle. He is independent. We think he is part cat. He likes to sleep by himself, and keep to himself. He is very good with other dogs, but doesn't like submissive dogs and will chase them. We believe Owen was physically abused earlier in life and therefore does not like to be touched without solicitation. In other words: he'll let you know when he wants love. He does not do well with children. Owen would do well with an adopter (male?) who can read doggie body language and can spend time with him for a period of time before adoption. An experience dog owner who has other dogs and doesn't need a "snuggle bug". To learn more about Owen, please check out his bio here: http://www.campcocker.com/owen If you are interested in meeting Owen, please read our adoption process here before submitting your application: http://www.campcocker.com/adoptionprocess Thank you so much for your support of animal rescue! Cocker Spaniel

A.K.A. : American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel
Overview: The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds in America. They're playful, love people, and adapt to both city and country dwelling. A Cocker needs a lot of exercise, but you'll find it a joy to have around!
Breed Group: Sporting
Weight (lbs): 24-28
Height (in): male: 14-15, female: 13-14
Colors: Black variety: solid black or black and tan. Particolor variety: any color with white. ASCOB variety: any solid color, other than black, including cream, red, brown and bown with tan points.
Coat: Silky, flat or slightly wavy, not overly long.
Character: Cocker Spaniels are intelligent, cheerful, lively, and affectionate.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets.
Care: The Cocker Spaniel requires regular grooming with a brush and comb. The ears should be cleaned frequently and a professional clipping and scissoring every 2 to 3 months.
Training: This breed requires consistency in training, but do not be too firm. He's eager to please and willing to learn, with the right approach.
Activity: The Cocker Spaniel can get by with three walks a day, although he welcomes being able to run freely now and then and enjoys swimming when given the opportunity.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: This breed may be prone to major problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and patellar luxation. Minor problems are hip dysplasia, ectropion, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy, allergies, seborrhea, lip fold pioderma, and otitis.
Life Expectancy: 12-15

More About Cocker Spaniel Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel. Maggie is a one-eyed wigglebutt! Maggie came to us with head trauma, and needed emergency surgery. Her left eye could not be saved but with 3 months of eye drops to her existing eye she now has partial sight! The eye meds greatly reduced inflammation so she can diferentiate shadows and other objects. She is incredibly smart and memorizes her surroundings very quickly. She goes up and down stairs without a second thought--- she is FEARLESS! She is a fearless CUDDLEBUG! If she had it her way she would plant herself in your lap like an oak tree and stay there for centuries! :) She is great with other dogs! You can read her story on our website: www.campcocker.com/maggie There are extra photos there too! All our adoption and fostering guidelines can be found on our website at www.campcocker.com

He loves to run, his Foster Dad takes him running in the mornings and he greatly benefits from the exercise! You know how much energy cockers can have! Milo is on a special diet that includes hydrolized salmon proteins (Blue Buffalo Brand) in addition to medication that treats his Inflammatory Bowl Disease.
